Effects Of Age, Neuropsychological Impairment, And Medication On Regional Cerebral Blood Flow In Schizophrenia And Major Affective Disorder, Perry C. Goldstein, Gregory G. Brown, Andrew Marcus, James R. Ewing Dec 1990

Effects Of Age, Neuropsychological Impairment, And Medication On Regional Cerebral Blood Flow In Schizophrenia And Major Affective Disorder, Perry C. Goldstein, Gregory G. Brown, Andrew Marcus, James R. Ewing

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Reports of abnormalities of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with schizophrenia and major affective disorder are contradictory. To gain a better understanding of the possible sources of these contradictions, the rCBF and neuropsychological functioning of 15 schizophrenics, 15 patients with major affective disorder, and 15 age-matched controls were studied. No group differences in overall rCBF, percent frontal devialion in flow, or rCBF asymmetries were observed. Both overall rCBF and percent frontal deviation of rCBF were reduced with greater age and with increasing neuropsychological impairment. Dosage of neuroleptic medication was associated with reduced whole brain flow, not with percent …

The Ketterer Stress Symptom Frequency Checklist: Anger And The Severity Of Coronary Artery Disease, Mark W. Ketterer Dec 1990

The Ketterer Stress Symptom Frequency Checklist: Anger And The Severity Of Coronary Artery Disease, Mark W. Ketterer

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Recent research suggests that the most potent feature of the Type A behavior pattern for prospectively predicting cardiac disease is aggravation, irritation, anger, and impatience (AIAI). The present study examines psychometric properties of a new AIAI measure and its relationship to the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). Subjects included 61 males undergoing coronary angiography. Comparisons were made of mean psychometric scores across groupings, defined by number of vessels occluded. These comparisons showed that the normal or subclinically occluded coronary angiographic group had high levels of depression and anxiety. Higher levels of AIAI were observed in patients with multivessel CAD …

A Procedure For Performance Assessment Of Drugs Hypothesized To Be Effective In Controlling Motion Sickness, Zainab N. Ahmed Dec 1990

A Procedure For Performance Assessment Of Drugs Hypothesized To Be Effective In Controlling Motion Sickness, Zainab N. Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is conducting research into the effectiveness of certain drugs for controlling motion sickness. If the drugs are found to be useful, they must still be proven to have no harmful effects on the operator's performance abilities. There are many methods for assessing performance effects of drugs but very little standardization exists. The Unified Tri-Services Cognitive Performance Assessment Battery (UTC-PAB) is a performance assessment method designed to be used by all military branches. This will encourage standardization of drug testing, exchange of data, and comparability of methods. Five tests were chosen from the UTC-PAB …

Nutrient Intake And Urine And Serum Calcium Response To A Low Calcium Diet And Repletion, Nancy Roberts Dec 1990

Nutrient Intake And Urine And Serum Calcium Response To A Low Calcium Diet And Repletion, Nancy Roberts

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A high percentage of American women do not consume the Recommended Dietary Allowance for calcium. Marginal intake of calcium (Ca) in the years when peak bone mass is being formed may have a detrimental impact on bone later in life. This study looked at the effect of low Ca intake and other dietary components on serum and urine values of Ca as well as the response to repletion.

Seventeen free-living females, age 21 to 30 years, were placed on a low Ca diet (/day) for 22 days after a baseline of intake >800 mg/day for at least 6 weeks. Calcibind …

Vestibular stimulation was provided by a hammock swing. All vocalizations were recorded during a total of thirteen 15-minute test sessions.

Results indicated that in this study: (a) There was no significant difference in quantity of vocalizations produced during self-initiated versus therapist-initiated vestibular stimulation, and (b) there was a significant increase in vocalizations during vestibular stimulation as compared to during …

Aids: Implications To Society And Approaches To Control, Robert W. Sidwell Nov 1990

Aids: Implications To Society And Approaches To Control, Robert W. Sidwell

Faculty Honor Lectures

It is perhaps a measure of today's society that a new disease of potentially world-wide implication does not gain national or international attention until a famous person contracts it. This was particularly seen with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) when it became known that Rock Hudson of movie and TV acclaim was dying of it. By the time the celebrated pianist and entertainer Liberace died of AIDS, the various public health agencies around the world had begun to focus on the problem, and enormous sums of money were being committed toward its control. Today, more U.s. dollars are budgeted for AIDS …

Exercise Tolerance And Alcohol Intake: Blood Pressure Relation, G. Harley Hartung, Harold W. Kohl Iii, Steven N. Blair, Steven J. Lawrence, Ronald B. Harrist

Faculty Publications

The relations of systolic and diastolic blood pressures to alcohol intake and exercise tolerance levels in 15,612 men and 3,855 women were investigated. Alcohol intake was assessed by questionnaire and stratified into seven levels for men and six for women according to the ounces of ethanol consumed per week. Exercise tolerance was determined by maximal treadmill exercise testing and was categorized into six age-specific by sex-specific levels. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly related to both alcohol intake and exercise tolerance levels in both men and women. These relations, which were positive for alcohol and negative for exercise …

The Polymerization And Thrombin-Binding Properties Of Des-(Bβ1-42)-Fibrin, Kevin R. Siebenlist, James P. Diorio, A. Z. Budzynski, Michael W. Mosesson Oct 1990

The Polymerization And Thrombin-Binding Properties Of Des-(Bβ1-42)-Fibrin, Kevin R. Siebenlist, James P. Diorio, A. Z. Budzynski, Michael W. Mosesson

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Multiple factors affect the thrombin-catalyzed conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, including: fibrinopeptide (FPA and FPB) release leading to exposure of two types of polymerization domains (“A” and “B,” respectively) in the central portion of the molecule, and exposure of a noncatalytic “secondary” thrombin-binding site in fibrin. Fibrinogen containing the FPA sequence but lacking the Bβ 1-42 sequence (“des-(Bβ 1-42)-fibrinogen”), was compared to native fibrinogen (containing both FPA and FPB) to investigate the role played by Bβ 1-42 in the polymerization of α-fibrin (i.e. fibrin lacking FPA), to compare reptilase and thrombin cleavage of FPA from fibrinogen, and …

Effects Of Ethanol Extraction And Heat Treatment Of Soybean Flakes On Function And Morphology Of Pig Intestine, J. D. Hancock, E. R. Peo Jr., A. J. Lewis, Rodney A. Moxley Oct 1990

Effects Of Ethanol Extraction And Heat Treatment Of Soybean Flakes On Function And Morphology Of Pig Intestine, J. D. Hancock, E. R. Peo Jr., A. J. Lewis, Rodney A. Moxley

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Digesta and tissue samples were collected from the intestinal tracts of 27 pigs to determine the relationship between intestinal morphology and the utilization of nutrients from soybean flakes. Soybean flake treatments were under-, intermediate- and overprocessed (Le., 5, 20 and 60 min of autoclaving) either without extraction or with heating before or after extraction with a 55% ethanol-water mixture. Final BW was greatest (P< .001) for pigs fed soybean flakes given 20 min of heat treatment. There was a trend (P < .09) for plasma lysine concentrations to be reduced when the unextracted soybean flakes were over-processed (60 min of heat). Differences in the flow rate of DM and N through the ileum and colon reflected differences in DM and N intake, rather than differences in intestinal function. The soybean flake treatments had no effect (P > .OS) on pH of the contents of the stomach, duodenum, ileum or colon. The ethanol extraction process increased (P < .001) N digestibility of the soybean flakes, especially when the soybean flakes were underprocessed (interaction, P < .02). Villus size (area, height and perimeter length) tended to be greater in pigs fed the soybean flakes heated after extraction and(or) exposed to the intermediate level of heat treatment. Indicators of villus shape (villus area/ villus height) and proliferative activity (crypt depth and villus heigh/crypt depth) were not affected by soybean flake treatment (P > .OS). Ethanol extraction and heat treatment affected the utilization of nutrients …

Specifically, the following processing steps were studied; 1) ground human bone was de fatted in various ethanol / water mixtures, and / or chloroform / methanol ( 2: 1, v:v ), 2) ground human bone which had lipids extracted ( in absolute ethanol ) and bone which had not had lipids extracted were demineralized using vanous concentrations of hydrochloric acid to assess …

Activation In Vitro Of Transfer Rna-Guanine Ribosyltransferase By Protein Kinase C, Panayota Eriotou Oct 1990

Activation In Vitro Of Transfer Rna-Guanine Ribosyltransferase By Protein Kinase C, Panayota Eriotou

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to isolate and purify the enzymes, transfer RNA-guanine ribosyltrasferase and protein kinase C, and to determine whether the phosphorylating enzyme activates the insertion enzyme in vitro. Transfer RNA-guanine ribosyltransferase lost activity within several days after isolation and total, complete reactivation was accomplished in the presence of protein kinase C. This demonstrated that ribosyltransferase's instability is related to the degree of its phosphorylation. It is proposed that modification of tRNA is controlled by protein kinase C. Deactivation of the insertion enzyme leads to hypomodified tRNA which in turn is associated with neoplasia. Potential use …

Application Of Dna Fingerprints For Cell-Line Individualization, Dennis A. Gilbert, Yvonne Reid, Mitchell H. Gail, David Pee, Christine White, Robert J. Hay, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

DNA fingerprints of 46 human cell lines were derived using minisatellite probes for hypervariable genetic loci. The incidence of 121 HaeIII DNA fragments among 33 cell lines derived from unrelated individuals was used to estimate allelic and genotypic frequencies for each fragment and for composite individual DNA fingerprints. We present a quantitative estimate of the extent of genetic difference between individuals, an estimate based on the percentage of restriction fragments at which they differ. The average percent difference (APD) among pairwise combinations from the population of 33 unrelated cell lines was 76.9%, compared with the APD in band sharing …

Laminin Potentiates Differentiation Of Pcc4uva Embryonal Carcinoma Into Neurons, T. M. Sweeney, Roy C. Ogle, C. D. Little

School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Publications

The embryonal carcinoma PCC4uva differentiates into neurons in response to treatment with retinoic acid and dbcAMP. We used this in vitro model system to study the effects of laminin on early neural differentiation. Laminin substrata markedly potentiate neural differentiation of retinoic acid and dbcAMP-treated cultures. Only laminin induced more rapid neural cell body clustering, neurite growth and neurite fasciculation as compared to type IV collagen, type I collagen, and fibronectin substrata. Exogenous laminin substrata promoted greater cell attachment, cellular spreading and growth to confluence than type IV collagen, type I collagen, fibronectin and glass substrata. Laminin-induced effects were inhibited by …
