Effects Of Antihypertensive And Cardiac Drugs And Level Of Depression In Community-Based Elders, Angela Hays
MSN Research Projects
The purpose of this ex post facto study was to determine the effects of antihypertensive and cardiac drugs on the level of depression in community-based elders. Roy's Adaptation Model provided the theoretical framework for this study. Data were collected using the Brink Geriatric Depression Scale and the Drug Information Sheet. These questionnaires were administered to 40 subjects ages 55 and older who were taking antihypertensive and/or cardiac drugs or neither antihypertensive nor cardiac drugs. One null hypothesis and five directional hypotheses guided this study. The null hypothesis stated that there would be no difference in mean depression scores among the …
Effects Of An Educational Program On Perceived Environmental Risk And Identification Of Corrective Actions Related To Falls Among Community-Based Elders, Mary Davis
MSN Research Projects
Injury from falls is a prevalent problem among the elderly population. There is not only high morbidity associated with falls, but also a high mortality rate. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an education program on perceived environmental risks and corrective actions related to falls among community-based elders. Johnson's Behavioral System Model provided the conceptual framework for this study. A quasi-experimental posttest only control group design was used to test the two hypotheses : The knowledge level of perceived environmental risks for falls will be higher among elders who participate in a falls prevention education …

The Relationships Of Body-Image Attitudes To Sexual Functioning And Experiences In A Normal College Population, Jill D. Hangen
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This study examined the relationships of body-image attitudes and sexual attitudes, experiences, and functioning in a college population. Sixty-five males and 120 females completed a variety of established self-report measures assessing the constructs under study, as well as two new measures developed in this study. The new measures included (1) The Sexual Experiences and Problems Survey for self-assessment of difficulties in sexual functioning, and (2) The Body Exposure in Sexual Activities Questionnaire to measure self-consciousness and avoidance of body exposure in sexual contexts. Analyses were performed in the data of those predominantly heterosexual subjects who reported a history of sexual …

This study was performed to determine if there is a quantifiable difference between quantitative fit testing using a probed facepiece and a probed cartridge. Four subjects were tested on four different respirators. The respirators used were MSA & 3M full and half face respirator. Each subject performed each method five times per respirator. The results indicated no correlation between the two fit testing methods overall. However, a moderate correlation was found between the MSA respirators and the two methods. This study found many variables which influence fit testing. These include the type of respirator used (brand and facepiece), the probe …
Effects Of Applied Soil Repellent Finish On Pesticide Residues In Work Clothing, Sandra L. Prior
Effects Of Applied Soil Repellent Finish On Pesticide Residues In Work Clothing, Sandra L. Prior
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the feasibility of using an applied soil repellent finish, Scotchgard, on 100% cotton denim fabric in order to enhance the removal of atrazine and alachlor residue during the laundering process. The experimental findings provided no statistically significant evidence that Scotchgard fabric protector reduced pesticide residuals on the 100% cotton denim fabric either before or after laundering. A significant finding secondary to the study involved the possible interaction of Scotchgard with the pesticide alachlor, leaving greater amounts of residual on the fabric after laundering than those found with no fabric treatment. This suggests that agricultural workers be cautioned …

Inability Of Mitogen-Activated Lymphocytes Obtained From Patients With Malignant Primary Intracranial Tumors To Express High Affinity Interleukin 2 Receptors, Lucinda H. Elliott, W. H. Brooks, T. L. Roszman
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
Patients with primary malignant brain tumors manifest a variety of abnormalities in cell-mediated and humoral immunity. Diminished T cell reactivity has been shown in these patients to be linked to deficiencies in interleukin 2 (IL-2) production that cannot be overcome by exogenous IL-2. In this study, specific binding of radiolabeled IL-2 to PHA-stimulated lymphocytes from brain tumor patients demonstrates that the number of high affinity interleukin 2 receptors (IL-2R) is greatly reduced. FACS analysis indicates that the relative density of the p55 protein (Tac protein) is lower on the mitogen-activated lymphocytes obtained from patients than on comparably treated lymphocytes from …

The Growth Of Simian Virus 40 (Sv40) Host Range/Adenovirus Helper Function Mutants In An African Green Monkey Cell Line That Constitutively Expresses The Sv40 Agnoprotein., Terryl P. Stacy, Michele Chamberlain, Susan Carswell, Charles N. Cole
Dartmouth Scholarship
The simian virus 40 T-antigen carboxy-terminal mutants, dlA2459 and dlA2475, are cell line and temperature dependent for growth and plaque formation in monkey kidney cells. Although these mutants did form plaques on BSC-1 cells at 37 degrees C, they were about fivefold less efficient for plaque formation than wild-type simian virus 40. These mutants did not grow in CV-1 cells and did not synthesize agnoprotein in those cells. CV-1 cells which constitutively express the agnoprotein were permissive for mutant plaque formation. However, late mRNAs, virion proteins, and progeny virion yields did not accumulate to wild-type levels during mutant infection of …

The Determination Of Clomiphene Citrate And Tamoxifen In Human Blood Plasma And Semen, Janice Irene Kiss
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Triphenylethylene antiestrogen compounds are used to stimulate ovulation in anovulary women and spermatogenesis in oligozoospermatic males. Clomiphene Citrate (CC) is given therapeuticaly as a mixture of the trans (E) and cis (Z) isomers. Each of these isomers has its own characteristic agonist-antagonist profiles. Only the trans form of Tamoxifen (T) is administered therapeutically.
HPLC methodologies were developed for the determination of CC and Tin human blood and seminal plasma. The methodologies involved extraction of the triphenylethylene compounds using hexane, followed by evaporation of the hexane under N2. The residue was then taken up in a volume of HPLC …
Development Of A Solid Phase Enzyme Immunoassay For Total Serum Testosterone, Li Li
Development Of A Solid Phase Enzyme Immunoassay For Total Serum Testosterone, Li Li
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
An enzyme-labeled immunoassay of sufficient range and sensitivity was developed for serum testosterone determination. In this method, the testosterone in the serum sample and testosterone-HRPO conjugate compete with each other for the limited antibody binding sites on the anti-testosterone gamma globulin coated microwell. The assay can be performed in only 2.5 hours.
The gamma globulin fraction was isolated from the anti-testosterone whole serum by DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. Testosterone-peroxidase conjugate was prepared by a carbodiimide coupling method. The interference which arises from the binding of testosterone to steroid hormone binding protein was eliminated by the addition of 17 beta-estradiol. All assay …

Replication And Amplification Of Defective Interfering Particle Rn As Of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus In Cells Expressing Viral Proteins From Vectors Containing Cloned Cdnas, Asit K. Pattnaik, Gail W. Wertz
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Replication and amplification of RNA genomes of defective interfering (DI) particles of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) depend on the expression of viral proteins and have untD now been attained only in ceUs coinfected with helper VSV. In the work described in this report, we used a recombinant vaccinia virus-T7 RNA polymerase expression system to synthesize individual VSV proteins in cells transfected with plasmid DNAs that contain cDNA copies of the VSV genes downstream of the T7 RNA polymerase promoter. In this way, we were able to examine the ability of VSV proteins, individually and in combination, to support DI particle …

Advocacy/Empowerment: An Approach To Clinical Practice For Social Work, Stephen M. Rose
Advocacy/Empowerment: An Approach To Clinical Practice For Social Work, Stephen M. Rose
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social Work has been embedded in a structural and ideological contradiction throughout its history. The profession, its employing institutions, and the problems confronted by its clients are all produced by the same political economy that pays its workers and supports its schools. Ideologically, the profession has avoided the confrontation implied by its dependency upon individual defect explanatory or causal analysis frameworks that constitute a betrayal of its real constituencies. An advocacy! empowerment paradigm is offered as an alternative.

Maternal Immunomodulation Of Neonatal Alloantigen Response, Leh Chang
Maternal Immunomodulation Of Neonatal Alloantigen Response, Leh Chang
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Remarkable success has been achieved in the transplantation of allogeneic cardiac grafts into newborn infants at Loma Linda University Medical Center. The superior graft survival rate documented in these patients has not correlated with the degree of immunosuppression rendered, or the selection of genetically matched donors. However, the clinical success has correlated with the age of the recipient at the time of receiving a transplant. Patients receiving an allograft within the first few weeks of life are unique in that they seem to accept the alloantigens of their cardiac graft while responding aggressively to antigens in their environment. These observations …

Evaluation Of Headgear Safety : A Comparative Study, William J. Pritchard
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine the relative safety of headgear safety straps. Samples from five different safety headgear straps simulated orthopedic and orthodontic use and data were collected from a series of pulls on an Instron machine. The straps were compared by the distance the face bow traveled before the safety mechanism released, the force built into the face bow at safety release and the force required to remove the inner bow out of the molar tube. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the distance a face bow can travel from the molar tube and still be …
