Evaluation Of A Patient Education Program For Patients With Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes (Type Ii), Helen M. Walker
Theses : Honours
The purpose of this study was to evaluate a group outpatient program for patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes (Type II). It endeavoured to establish whether at the completion of a patient education program, and again at the 3 month follow-up period, the patients were complying with : (a) the recommended dietary plan, (b) the exercise program, and (c) were monitoring blood glucose levels at home, as evidenced by weight loss and metabolic control of their diabetes. The study also investigated factors influencing non-compliance. The theoretical rationale used for this study was Pender's Health Promotion Model, which theorises that health-promoting behaviour …

Neurospora Crassa Clock-Controlled Genes Are Regulated At The Level Of Transcription., Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap
Dartmouth Scholarship
Although an extensive number of biological processes are under the daily control of the circadian biological clock, little is known about how the clock maintains its regulatory networks within a cell. An important aspect of this temporal control is the daily control of gene expression. Previously we identified two morning-specific genes that are regulated by the clock through daily control of gene expression (J. Loros, S. Denome, and J.C. Dunlap, Science 243:385-388, 1989). We have now introduced a method for transcriptional analysis in Neurospora crassa and used this nuclear run-on procedure to show that regulation of mRNA abundance for these …

We have reported previously the enhancement of the infectivity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV- 1) by liposomes composed of the cationic lipid N[2,3-(dioleyloxy) propyl]-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride (DOTMA). To determine the mechanism by which this process occurs, we have investigated the role of CD4, serum concentration and liposome-cell interactions in the DOTMA-mediated stimulation of HIV-1 infection of A3.01 cells. Serum alone significantly inhibited the binding and infectivity of HIV-1, but DOTMA-mediated enhancement of infectivity was more pronounced in the presence of serum than in its absence. HIV-1 binding to cells was increased in the presence of DOTMA liposomes, DEAE-dextran and …

Origin And Evolution Of Defective Interfering Rnas Of Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus, David A. Knorr, Thomas Jack Morris
Origin And Evolution Of Defective Interfering Rnas Of Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus, David A. Knorr, Thomas Jack Morris
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Viruses with defective genomes have been identified in association with virtually every major family of viruses and have been widely utilized as tools for investigating virus functions in animal cell culture systems (Perrault, 1981). It is generally thought that defective interfering viruses (DIs) arise through deletion, rearrangement, or recombination of a competent viral genome. DIs tack the ability for independent existence relying on their parental helper viruses to supply factors required for replication, maturation, and/or encapsidation (Huang and Baltimore, 1977). The interference attributed to DIs is thought to result from competition with the helper virus for factors required in trans …

Dietary And Parasitological Analysis Of Coprolites Recovered From Mummy 5, Ventana Cave, Arizona, Karl Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly
Karl Reinhard Publications
Four coprolites were excavated with Burial 5 at Ventana Cave. a partially mummified five-year-old child. Two coprolites were granular and dark in color and two were fibrous and light in color. The coprolites are remains of the child's intestinal contents and were submitted for dietary and parasitological analysis. No parasites were found. The fibrous coprolites proved to be remains of highly masticated mesquite pods (Prosopis). The granular coprolites consist of seeds of saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). Pollen analysis reveals two dietary pollen types, both derived from cactus. No evidence of cultivated plants except for a trace amount of …

Calcium Diluents As Matrix Forming Agents In Sustained Release Dosage Forms, Jones W. Bryan Jr.
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of the poorly soluble diluents; calcium sulfate dihydrate, dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate, and tribasic calcium phosphate on medicament release from solid dosage forms. Initial findings led to an investigation of the use of these diluents as matrix forming agents in the formulation of sustained release solid dosage farms. An existing single station tablet press was instrumented with a transducer strain gauge apparatus to monitor compression force applied during tablet manufacture. An automated dissolution system was used to determine medicament release from the dosage forms under investigation. These three diluents when …

The Effects Of Concentric And Eccentric Contractions Performed At Equal Power Levels On Skeletal Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy, Thomas Philip Mayhew
Theses and Dissertations
There are no data available as to whether training with eccentric contractions are more effective than concentric contractions for producing skeletal muscle fiber hypertrophy. To better understand the effects of training with different contraction types two related studies were performed.
In the first study a device which is frequently used by clinicians for concentric and eccentric exercise, the Kin-ComR, was tested for accuracy and reliability. The measurements obtained from the force, angle, and speed transducers of this device were found to be accurate and reliable between days.
The purpose of the second study was to determine if there …

The Relationship Between Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behavioral Intentions Regarding Mental Illness With A Focus On Schizophrenia, Kellie Kae Boeckmann
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to assess subjects' knowledge about schizophrenia in relation to their attitudes regarding the mentally ill. The variables' relationship with behavioral intentions toward persons with schizophrenia was also evaluated. A behavioral intentions scale, developed for use in this study, was completed by subjects in a preliminary study designed to establish the instruments' reliability. The research strategy employed in the principal study involved the use of three questionnaires: (a) the Knowledge of Mental Illness-- Schizophrenia Scale (Wahl, 1987); (b) Scales for Measuring Beliefs About the Mentally Ill (Dear & Taylor, 1982); and (c) the Behavioral Intentions …

The Effects Of Glutathione On Human Keratinocyte, Manisha N. Trivedi
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Cultured human keratinocytes were grown in vitro to assess the effects of glutathione, a thiol, on human keratinocyte proliferation. Single keratinocytes were harvested from newborn (greater than 5 days old) foreskin and were grown in culture flasks such that experiments could be performed in approximately 2 to 3 weeks. In order to evaluate the effects of glutathione (GSH) on keratinocyte growth, experiments were performed to determine the growth curve, plating efficiency, and incorporation of radiolabelled thymidine. Growth studies, performed with different concentrations of glutathione, revealed that 0.065 μM was the most effective concentration when compared to control cell cultures, and …
