Hallucinogens: A Cause Of Convulsive Ergot Psychoses, Sylvia Dahl Winters

Ergotism with vasoconstriction and gangrene has been reported through the centuries. Less well publicized are the cases of psychoses associated with convulsive ergotism. Lysergic acid amide a powerful hallucinogen having one.-tenth the hallucinogenic activity of LSD-25 is produced by natural sources. This article attempts to show that convulsive ergot psychoses are mixed psychoses caused by lysergic acid amide or similar hallucinogens combined with nervous system lesions secondary to vasoconstrictive effects of ergotoxine.

Growth Augmentation With Activators, John R. Sibley

This research was performed to determine if bony changes could be effected by activator treatment and how stable this treatment is.

From a sample of twenty-seven cases with before activator treatment cephalometric radiographs. Rocky Mountain Data Systems provided growth projections, with and without edgewise treatment, for the period of time each patient was in treatment. These forecasts were compared to the post-treatment cephalograms to analyze the orthopedic effects of activator treatment with normal growth and with edgewise therapy.

Nine of the twenty-seven case treated sample responded to recall for post-treatment cephalograms and were analyzed for relapse.

Cushing's Disease: Spontaneous Remission Following Severe Headache, Raymond C. Mellinger

A young woman was found to have persistent Cushing's syndrome one year after surgical removal of both hyperplastic adrenal glands. Improvement followed pituitary irradiation butshe developed skin pigmentation. Remission of the adrenal hyperfunction occurred only after several months of therapy with o,p'-DDD. Within 15 months, the recurrent disorder required a second course of DDD with resulting adrenal insufficiency. Eighteen months later, however, steroid supplements were no longer required and increasing Cortisol levels indicated still another imminent relapse. There was no enlargement of the sella turcica. Endoscopic Retrograde Pancreatic Duct Cannulation (Erpc): An Aid To Pancreatic Surgery, C. Grodsinsky, B. Schuman, B. E. Brush

Retrograde endoscopic pancreatic duct cannulation for evaluation of patients with chronic pancreatitis is reviewed over the last two years. Of 40 patients that were endoscoped, 30 had a successful pancreatogram. The X-ray findings fell into three groups: 1) single and multiple stenosis, 2) diffuse narrowing, and 3) apparently normal duct. This procedure proved of value in ruling out or delaying surgical operation in 10 persons. Twenty-one patients underwent operations. Thirteen had a 95% pancreatectomy, one had drainage of a necrotic collection thought to be a pseudocyst and one had a pseudocyst resected. One had a gastrojejunostomy and vagotomy bypassing a …

A case is reported of multiple myeloma in a 23-year-old man, including extensive clinical studies and postmortem examination. Multiple myeloma for this age group is considered to be extremely rare.

Infections Due To Trichosporon Cutaneum, An Uncommon Systemic Pathogen, Tom Madhavan, John Eisses, Edward L. Quinn

Multiple isolations of T. Cutaneum from the blood stream of two patients enabled the authors to characterize the morphology, biochemical reactions and antibiotic susceptibility of T. Cutaneum. This organism appears to be an opportunistic pathogen and responds promptly to intravenous Amphotericin B or oral 5-Fluorocytosine.

Bupivacaine As A Local Anesthetic For Hernia Repair, Joseph L. Ponka, James A. Sapala

Bupivacaine hydrochloride is a safe, useful local anesthetic agent for repair of groin hernias. Prolonged anesthesia, lasting six hours or longer, was observed In 94 of WO patients. No toxic effects involving the central nervous system were observed using a 0.25% solution with epinephrine. Hypotension and cardiac arrhythmia occurred in one patient. Wound complications, such as hematomas and ecchymosis, were more common with Bupivacaine than when Chlorprocaine was used. However, painstaking hemostasis, which required ligation of even the tiniest blood vessels, reduced the wound complications. Measurement Of Permeability Of The Cell Membrane To Water, Richard Moore, Frederick Thornburgh, Donggyu Jin

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The water permeability was measured for blood cells from normal subjects and for blood cells from patients with leukemia. The method of measurement of the kinetics of water influx employed a stopped flow apparatus. The method of calculation of results was based on irreversible thermodynamics. The measurements and calculations were both performed with the assistance of a computer. The water permeability of the leukemic cells was decreased from normal, and the values were more variable than normal. Leukemia changes the structure of the cell membrane.
