Some Aspects Of An Early Expression Of Dominance In White Pine (Pinus Strobus L.), J Lee Deen
Some Aspects Of An Early Expression Of Dominance In White Pine (Pinus Strobus L.), J Lee Deen
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
A series of temporary plots was made for the purpose of observing and noting (1) the factors affecting an expression of dominance of white pine (Pinus strobus Linnaeus) and (2) the relationship between dominance and the development of white pine stands. Twenty natural stands and thirteen plantation stands were studied.

An Economic Study Of The Food Habits Of The Ring-Necked Pheasant In South Dakota, H.C. Severin, South Dakota Department Of Game And Fish
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
The economic status in South Dakota of the ring-necked pheasant (Phasinus colchicus torquatus Gmelin X Phasianus colchicus colchicus L.) has turned out to be a controversial matter of no small importance with the citizenry of the State. This bird was introduced into South Dakota mainly thru the efforts and funds of the State Department of Game and Fish, and thru this department the pheasant was protected form slaughter by hunters, and permitted to multiply. When it was believed that the pheasants hasd established themselves in a county and multiplied sufficiently to warrant an open season , such an open season …
Origin Of The Limb Musculature In The Mouse., R Wendell Coffelt
Origin Of The Limb Musculature In The Mouse., R Wendell Coffelt
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
One of the most important and much disputed questions in the field of developmental anatomy is the role the myotomes play in the development of the limb musculature. At present there are two explanations advanced concerning the development of the limb-musculature in mammals. The first is that limb-buds arise as local thickening of the somatopleure, which becomes filled with a homogeneous syncytial mesenchymal tissue, that later becomes innervated with muscle-buds from the myotomes and with blood vessels, and nerves from the trunk of th embryo. The second method explained as to the origin of limb muscles is that they are …

Trichomonas Fulicae Sp. Nov. From Fulica Americana, Elizabeth G. Lash
Trichomonas Fulicae Sp. Nov. From Fulica Americana, Elizabeth G. Lash
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Numerous trichomonad flagelletes from the intestines or various birds have been described; but as fas as the writer has been able to discover, none from the intestine of the coot, Fulica americana. Martin and Robertson (1911) described Trichomones eberthi and T. gallinerum from the caecum of fowls; Kotlan (1923) described Tetratrichomonas avatis from the caecum of ducks; Tyzzer (1930) described flagellates from the ruffed grouse.
However, the species described by the above authors are quite different from Trichomonas to be described in this paper. This organism is definitely a member of the genus Trichomonas since it possesses the distinguishing characteristics …

The Development Of The Floral Organs Of Glycyrrhiza Lepidota, Richard L. Matteson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is the first of a proposed series of papers, coming from the Botanical Laboratory of South Dakota State College, on the developmental anatomy of the prairie legumes. The recorded investigations of the legumes deal mostly with the cultivated species, and the greater part of this work considers the taxonomy and cytology of flowers. These papers proposed above deal with the floral development and the floral vascular anatomy of this family.

UAES Bulletins
This bulletin includes the results of Station Project 99-Fattening Lambs in Winter Drylot-which was begun at Monroe on November 15, 1928, and at Delta on November 13, 1929. The experiment was conducted for a period of four years at Monroe and for one year at Delta. Messers Alma and Milton Magelby of Monroe were closely associated with the Monroe experiment, furnishing the yards and the lambs as well as the feed used; the Monroe Lamb-feeders Association also cooperated in conducting this experiment. During the period that the Delta test was under way, Mr. J. F. Roe furnished the yards, the …

The Identification Of The More Important Prairie Hay Grasses Of Nebraska By Their Vegetative Characters, F. D. Keim, G. W. Beadle, A. L. Frolik
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
It is convenient and sometimes necessary to identify the grasses in their vegetative stage of growth. This is especially desirable in a study of the vegetation of native hay meadows and permanent pastures. This key is prepared as a guide in the identification of the more important prairie hay grasses of Nebraska. The meadows are often harvested before the floral parts of many of the grasses appear. If it is desired, therefore, to study the botanical composition of the native meadows, it becomes necessary to rely on identification of many of the grasses by means of vegetative characters.

Bulletin No. 242 - Drainage Of Land Overlying An Artesian Ground-Water Reservoir: Progress Report, O. W. Israelsen, W. W. Mclaughlin
UAES Bulletins
Certain tracts of land in the West formerly used to produce grain and forage crops now produce only pasture grasses of comparatively low quality because of the water-logging and alkali accumulation which has occurred since irrigation was begun. Other tracts now producing only light crops of wild hay probably would produce profitable crops of alfalfa and clover, provided the water-table were lowered and the water-logged and alkaline condition of the soil removed. Still other areas are almost wholly nonproductive because of the concentration of excessive quantities of harmful alkali salts.
Knowledge concerning (1) the causes of water-logging, (2) economical methods …
Lingual Deposition In The Woodbine Sands Along Copperas Branch, Denton County, Texas: A Study In Marine Sedimentation, Ellis W. Shuler
Lingual Deposition In The Woodbine Sands Along Copperas Branch, Denton County, Texas: A Study In Marine Sedimentation, Ellis W. Shuler
Field and Laboratory
The lack of outcrops in three dimensions often limits the interpretation and understanding of sedimentary structures, the relation of transition beds, and the cycle of sedimentation. The low dips of the Woodbine sands in Denton County, Texas, together with the numerous outcrops in the miniature canyons of Hickory Creek, Bethel and Copperas Branches, offer an unusual opportunity for studies in the sedimentation of these sands.
Bulletin No. 239 - Wet Beet Pulp Compared With Corn Silage In The Dairy Ration, George Q. Bateman, George B. Caine
Bulletin No. 239 - Wet Beet Pulp Compared With Corn Silage In The Dairy Ration, George Q. Bateman, George B. Caine
UAES Bulletins
Wet beet pulp coming as a by-product from the sugar-beet industry in Utah is fed in varying amounts to dairy cows. Corn silage is also used to make up part of the dairy ration. Conflicting statements as to the value of the one feed as compared to the other indicated the need of more knowledge as to the value of pulp as compared to silage in the dairy ration. For this reason a study of the problem was initiated in February, 1926.
Why Some Hens Lay More Eggs Than Others, H. E. Alder
Why Some Hens Lay More Eggs Than Others, H. E. Alder
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The 1929 report of the Storrs Egg Laying Contest, which has been conducted at Storrs, Connecticut, twenty-one years, shows that the best pen of ten hens entered laid 2,802 eggs, and the poorest pen laid 829 eggs. In the best pen the average egg production per hen was 280, 2 eggs as compared with 82.9 eggs per bird in the poorest pen. Why did the one pen lay so many eggs, and the other so few? This prompts us to try to find out what factors are responsible for the number of eggs a hen lays in the course of …

Few people, even among college graduates, have a clear conception of the structure of the Solar System. Perhaps there are two reasons why this is true. In the first place, our educational system is so organized that there is little room for courses in astronomy, either in the high school or college curriculum. In the second place, it is not easy to get the true conception of the Solar System without a mechanical model, and mechanical models of the sun and its family are difficult to construct. In order that the students of Southern Methodist University might obtain a more …
