The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Albinism In Terrestrial Isopods, S. W. Geiser Nov 1932

The Frequency Of Occurrence Of Albinism In Terrestrial Isopods, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

The well-known British geneticist, Professor F. A. E. Crew, of the University of Edinburgh, in a plate illustrating his article, "Albino," in the fourteenth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, gives an excellent figure showing albinism in the common European lobster, Homar1lS gammarus (L.). This unusual figure and record, as one of the few reported cases of albinism among the Crustacea, deserves more than passing comment.

A Note On The Calculus Of The Distribution Of Genetic Characters In Crosses Involving Linkage, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

Teachers of genetics will welcome a simplified method for the calculation of the segregation of characters in crosses involving linkage, over the old, laborious method now in use.

Bulletin No. 237 - Panguitch Livestock Experimental Farm Progress Report, B. F. Hulme

UAES Bulletins

The Panguitch Experimental Livestock Farm is located three miles north of Panguitch, the county seat of Garfield County. Prior to 1909 it was held by the United States as an Indian school. In 1909 the United States Congress transferred title to the State of Utah. Two years later, in 1911 , the Utah Legislature decided that this property should "be used as an experiment station in connection with the Agricultural College of Utah ...", and control was vested in the Board of Trustees of the Utah State Agricultural College.

The Vitamin A And The Vitamin E Content Of Field-Cured And Artificially Cured Alfalfa Hay, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis, R. R. Graves

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A comparative study of the vitamin A content of field-cured and artificially cured alfalfa was made by comparing the growth produced by 124 rats receiving alfalfa hay as their source of vitamin A. From the results of this study, in which the experiments were duplicated, it is concluded that under the conditions of these experiments the artificially cured alfalfa was twice as potent in vitamin A as was the field-cured alfalfa. The comparative study of the vitamin E content of these hays was made by comparing the number of litters produced by groups of female rats which received graded quantities …

The Nature Of Resistance In Alfalfa To Wilt (Aplanobacter Insidiosum L. Mc.), George L. Peltier, F. R. Schroeder Oct 1932

The Nature Of Resistance In Alfalfa To Wilt (Aplanobacter Insidiosum L. Mc.), George L. Peltier, F. R. Schroeder

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Alfalfa wilt was first discovered in 1924 in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. The causal organism, Aplanobacter insidiosum, was later described by McCulloch. Since that time wilt has been reported from most of the alfalfa-growing sections of the United States and in some states it has been responsible for a rapid decrease in the acreage of alfalfa. During the past three years a number of investigators have found that certain alfalfas are somewhat resistant to wilt, whereas others are very susceptible. At the Nebraska station the results to date indicate that all common and most variegated alfalfas are very …

Root System Of Quercus Macrocarpa In Relation To The Invasion Of Prairie, J. E. Weaver, Joseph Cramer Sep 1932

Root System Of Quercus Macrocarpa In Relation To The Invasion Of Prairie, J. E. Weaver, Joseph Cramer

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Invasion of trees into grassland is primarily a phenomenon of plant competition. It involves the relation of the invaded and the invader to light and other atmospheric factors of the habitat, both physical and biotic. But perhaps even to a greater degree the edaphic factors, and especially water in dry climates, are concerned. Consequently to understand the reasons for plant distribution and the changes resulting from natural successions, a knowledge of the parts of the plants underground and of the interrelations of the root systems is of fundamental importance.

The great tension zone or ecotone between the deciduous forest formation …

Bulletin No. 236 - The Manufacture Of Cheese From Soft-Curd And Hard-Curd Milks, R. L. Hill, A. C. Merrill

UAES Bulletins

Little investigational work has been conducted on the effect of the hardness of curd of milk on the quality, quantity, and commercial value of cheese.

In July 1930, a preliminary report from the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station was made on these researches. This report indicated that for the manufacture of cheese hard-curd milk was far superior to soft-curd milk. This research is a continuation of that project.

Hard- and soft-curd milk used in the tests reported was obtained from Holstein cows. The fat content of each milk was practically the same. While the difference in curd hardness between the soft- …

Sporogenesis In Riccia Natans L., Mary Fortunata Aug 1932

Sporogenesis In Riccia Natans L., Mary Fortunata

Bachelors’ Theses

Until comparatively recent years little, comprehensive Cytological work had been done on the lower forms of plant life including the Liverworts. Cavers (1903) stated that Micheli in 1729 named a species "Hepaticae fontana" because of the supposed resemblance between the branched thallus and the lobes of the liver, and although this species was later named "Fegatella conica", the name "Hepaticae" has, since then, been applied to the whole group of Liverworts. Between 1850 and 1862 Hofmeister demonstrated "Alternation of Generations" in this group, and it was this characteristic that distinguished them permanently …

The Reaction Of Salts On The Regional Muscular Activity Of The Earthworm, Ernest D. Habeger Jul 1932

The Reaction Of Salts On The Regional Muscular Activity Of The Earthworm, Ernest D. Habeger

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Though a great amount of work has been done concerning the effects of salts upon the organic constituents of all muscular tissues of the earthworm, very little has actually been accomplished showing the effect of salts on the rhythmic contractions of that animal. However, the normal peristaltic activity of the muscles of the earthworm has been shown to represent a characteristic behavior from its anterior to its posterior extremity.

It is the purpose of this investigation to demonstrate the effects of various concentrations of salts on this normal rhythmic activity of the various regions of the earthworm.

A Study Of Some Species Of Pediastrum And Scenedesmus, Irene Cull

Bachelors’ Theses

Although regarded by the untrained observer as slime, filth and scum, algae are fascinating to the botanist who has become interested in them. Algae are found everywhere; they are our commonest water plants. Among the green algae we have some of the most beautiful and fascinating forms in the plant kingdom and undoubtedly Pediastrum and Scenedesmus, the two genera studied, are among the most beautiful of all.

Bulletin No. 234 - The Beet Leafhopper In Northern Utah, George F. Knowlton May 1932

Bulletin No. 234 - The Beet Leafhopper In Northern Utah, George F. Knowlton

UAES Bulletins

The first Utah sugar factory was erected at Lehi in 1891. Since that time many other factories have been built, and the growing of sugar-beets has become an important part of the agricultural program in many irrigated sections of this state. From almost the beginning, the tiny beet leafhopper, Eutettix tenellus (Baker), has threatened the very existence of this industry, and, in connection with the curly-top disease which it disseminates, has been responsible for the loss of many millions of dollars to the sugar-beet growers and sugar manufacturers of Utah. Poor prices, competition of other crops, sugar-beet nematode and crop …

Tuber Development In Triumph Potatoes As Influenced By Time Of Planting On Dry Land In Northwestern Nebraska, H. O. Werner May 1932

Tuber Development In Triumph Potatoes As Influenced By Time Of Planting On Dry Land In Northwestern Nebraska, H. O. Werner

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Triumph potatoes were planted on four different dates during six years in order to determine the best planting date on dry land in northwestern Nebraska, where this variety is grown primarily for seed. Features considered in comparing the merits of these planting dates were: stand of plants; vine growth; disease prevalence; time of plant maturity; number, size, and shape of tubers; cracking at harvest time; prevalence and severity of common scab; total yields and yields of various grades of potatoes from various harvesting dates; weight loss in storage; and duration of the dormant period. The experimental aspects dealing with the …

The Pituitary, Thyroid, And Adrenal Glands Of The Opossum, Max F. Drozewski May 1932

The Pituitary, Thyroid, And Adrenal Glands Of The Opossum, Max F. Drozewski

Bachelors’ Theses

In recent years a great deal has been written on the endocrine glands. However most of the articles deal with the physiological function of the various ductless glands only. Very little of this literature deals with the anatomical structure of the organs themselves. In this thesis we shall discuss the anatomical structure of the endocrine glands namely, the Pituitary(hypophysis), Thyroid and the Adrenal of a marsupial. The work has been done on the opossum of the virginia species, Didelphis virginiana. Only two specimens were available for dissection.

The Endocrine Glands And Their Secretions, Eldred M. Moehrke May 1932

The Endocrine Glands And Their Secretions, Eldred M. Moehrke

Bachelors’ Theses

In the following work the endocrine system was considered in general with special emphasis on the thyroid and para-thyroid glands. In some manner, which we do not well understand, the thyroid and the para-thyroid glands affect the other ductless glands and it is this relationship that is stressed.
