The Silvan Flora Of The White Rock Lake Region With Reference To Soil Types, Landon H. Baker Apr 1933

The Silvan Flora Of The White Rock Lake Region With Reference To Soil Types, Landon H. Baker

Field and Laboratory

White Rock Lake, lying at the east border of the City of Dallas, has been the focus of considerable biological study during the past few years, and the writer has been especially interested in the trees growing in the region. In this connection the question arose as to whether or not a correlation might exist between the species of woody plants found in the locality, and the physical and chemical structure of the various soils of the vicinity. The recently completed Soil Survey of Dallas County offers data upon the origin and nature of these soils, and these have been …

A Case Of Congenital Aphalangia In Man, Mayne Longnecker Apr 1933

A Case Of Congenital Aphalangia In Man, Mayne Longnecker

Field and Laboratory

An interesting case involving an incompletely developed left manus came to the writer's attention some time ago. The third, fourth, and fifth digits were entirely missing, save for small fleshy outgrowths; the index was about one and a half centimeters long, and obviously contained a bone, while the thumb appeared to be only about a centimeter shorter than the thumb on the subject's other and normal hand. The wrist seemed to possess an unusual degree of flexibility, and the left arm was normal, although of slightly less circumference than the right, the difference being probably due to its less use.

Aerial Reconnaissance Mapping Of Land Utilization, Claude C. Albritton Jr. Apr 1933

Aerial Reconnaissance Mapping Of Land Utilization, Claude C. Albritton Jr.

Field and Laboratory

Within the last year, the Department of Geology and Geography of Southern Methodist University has initiated a series of land utilization studies for Dallas County. The survey divides the county into thirty areas of approximately thirty square miles each. The first two areas assigned, located in the northwest corner of the county, embracing about sixty-five square miles, contain two small urban centers, Farmers Branch (population 400), and Carrollton (population 689). In the course of field work on the assigned areas, the authors felt that an aerial reconnaissance might expedite the survey and an airplane trip was arranged to cover the …

Bulletin No. 241 - Peach Harvesting Studies, F. M. Coe Apr 1933

Bulletin No. 241 - Peach Harvesting Studies, F. M. Coe

UAES Bulletins

The purpose of the four seasons' study of maturity indexes of Elberta type peaches, made in Utah during the years 1926, 1928, 1929, and 1932 and presented in this publication, was to determine more accurately the best stage of maturity of peaches for distant shipment. In general, the procedure was: (1) To record color, pressure test, and other maturity indexes of fruit from trees under various conditions of culture, age, and vigor; (2) to classify the fruit by size and ground color; (3) to store under conditions comparable to refrigerated shipment to market; and (4) to record the appearance, quality, …

The Relative Susceptibility Of Alfalfas To Wilt, George L. Peltier Apr 1933

The Relative Susceptibility Of Alfalfas To Wilt, George L. Peltier

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Except for alfalfa seed originating from a few old fields of Turkestan and Ladak, all varieties and strains now grown for commercial seed production in the United States, so far tested, have proved susceptible to wilt. All seed lots tested from South America (Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay), Europe (France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Roumania, and Ukranian S.S.R.), Africa (Morocco, Algeria, and Abyssinia), and Asia (Palestine, Manchuria, China, Korea, and Chinese Turkestan) were found to be susceptible to wilt. All seed lots of Turkestan origin so far tested are as resistant as Hardistan, or more so. Seed samples from the …

The Comparative Anatomy Of The Kidneys, Edward Silberman Apr 1933

The Comparative Anatomy Of The Kidneys, Edward Silberman

Bachelors’ Theses

Most of the Information which I have been able to amass has been taken from text books dealing with the kidney as an excretory organ only. My bibliography, therefore, covers a rather limited field. In it there will be found no articles in the various journals as my endeavors to find any such articles on my particular subject have not met with success. My thesis does not only contain a comprehensive account of the kidney, its weight and size, but also an account of its shape, size and correlation in growth and size to the age and weight of the …

Contributions To The Anatomy Of The Mature Larva Of Papilio Polyxenes Fab. (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), Ernst J. Dornfeld

Bachelors’ Theses

Thia study was undertaken with the purpose of gathering more comprehensive information on the larval anatomy of a typical member of the lepidopterous family Papilionidae. Except for investigations dealing with the osmeteria, literature on the general anatomy of this otherwise well known family is very scant. Because of the relatively small number of specimens that were available for study, this paper has been limited to a discussion of the external anatomy and of the gross . morphology of the digestive tract, the urinary system, the silk glands, and the mandibular glands. Important papers in which these structures have been …

Ec33-136 Corn In Nebraska, P.H. Stewart, D.L. Gross, T.A. Kiesselbach Jan 1933

Ec33-136 Corn In Nebraska, P.H. Stewart, D.L. Gross, T.A. Kiesselbach

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Corn is Nebraska's most important crop. Of the nearly 19 million acres under cultivation in the state, over 10 million acres or more than 50 percent is normally planted to corn. This is three times the acreage of wheat, four times that of oats, and ten times that of barley. The 10-year average acre yield of corn for this state is 25.8 bushels compared with 26.9 bushels for the entire United States. Nebraska, with an average annual crop of approximately 258 million bushels, usually ranks third among all states in the total production of corn, being exceeded by Iowa and …

Ec33-940 Home Baking Of Breads, Florence J. Atwood Jan 1933

Ec33-940 Home Baking Of Breads, Florence J. Atwood

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Bread in some form is one article of food that is served on the table three times a day. No other single article of food has as constant a place in the daily menu. Bread is often the main item for breakfasts and suppers. The combination of bread and milk lends itself to an economical meal.

Breadmaking is not a difficult task. The splendid flours and reliable yeasts which are available have done much in helping to assure success in breadmaking. Home baking offers opportunities for variety in menus at low cost.

This 1933 extension circular discusses the principle ingredients …

A Key To Differentiate Nymphal Stages Of Melanoplus Differentialis (Thomas) From Those Of Melanoplus Bivittatus (Say), (Orthoptera); Also, Descriptions Of Instars And A Key For Identification Of Nymphal Stages Of These Two Species, Gerald Bishop Spawn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the past few years South Dakota and neighboring states have been confronted with serious outbreaks of locusts. Whole crops of small grain and corn have been destroyed by the voracious insect hordes which at times left only bare ground where once had stood waving fields of grain. Chief among the aggressors have been the two species, Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas), the Differential Locust, and Melanoplus bivittatus (Say), the Two-Striped Locust. The contents of this paper include studies of these two species.

Reliability And Adequacy Of South Dakota Farm Price Data, John Muehlbeier Jan 1933

Reliability And Adequacy Of South Dakota Farm Price Data, John Muehlbeier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The reliability and adequacy of South Dakota farm price data cannot be stated with any great degree of precision. The statistical measures of reliability in this analysis are based upon the conditions of simple sampling of which the conclusions cannot be stated in absolute terms but must be expressed in probability. The sampling as done by the Division of Crop and Livestock Estimates is known as weighted stratified sampling, a departure from simple sampling, but considered to result in greater representativeness. Recognizing the limitations of the measures in this study, certain conclusions can still be drawn concerning the reliability of …
