Babcock Testing And Other Methods Of Analyzing Dairy Products, L. K. Crowe Sep 1941

Babcock Testing And Other Methods Of Analyzing Dairy Products, L. K. Crowe

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The manufacturing of dairy products on a commercial scale began about the middle of the nineteenth century and was greatly stimulated by the development of the centrifugal cream separator in the late eighties. The invention of the Babcock test in the early nineties overcame some of the difficulties that had developed in paying for milk upon its butterfat content, since it was early recognized that milk varied widely in that respect.

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs Sep 1941

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

Activity Of Papain On Gelatin Mixtures, Edward J. Ruschmann Jul 1941

Activity Of Papain On Gelatin Mixtures, Edward J. Ruschmann

Bachelors’ Theses

Within the Marquette chemical laboratories under the direction and supervision of Dr. John R. Koch, professor and head of the Chemistry Department, many noteworthy advances in enzyme chemistry have been achieved. A new type all glass, single unit viscometer was developed and perfected by Koch and now is the basis of the study of enzyme activity by viscometric methods. The use of this viscometer is not limited solely to work in these laboratories but has also been used with great success in bating and brewing.

Utilization Of Peptones And Peptone Fractions By Bacteria, Margaret E. Mcmaster Jul 1941

Utilization Of Peptones And Peptone Fractions By Bacteria, Margaret E. Mcmaster

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

An attempt was made to determine the minimum concentration of the different peptones which are necessary to support the growth of a group of aerobic microorganisms. The medium for this experiment was semi-solid glucose peptone agar, with the peptone being varied in amount and kind.

  1. The growth supporting properties of the peptones under investigation varied a great deal.
  2. The minimum concentration of peptone necessary for the growth of Shigella dysenteriae, Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus lactis, and Salmonella pullorum was determined.
  3. Peptones appear to contain a substance which is toxic to Salmonella pullorum or else they lack a growth …

The Germination Of Weed Seeds As Influenced By Environmental Factors, Edna Pauline Mertz Jul 1941

The Germination Of Weed Seeds As Influenced By Environmental Factors, Edna Pauline Mertz

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The problem involved in this investigation was that of determining the effect of environmental factors upon the germination of twelve species of weed seeds. The seeds were harvested, divided into three groups designated as Groups I, II and III, and stored under different environmental conditions. Group I, a temperature control group, was stored under conditions of normal temperature, Group II under continued cold and Group III was subjected to intermittent freezing and thawing. A small fourth group, consisting of seeds of species which failed to germinate or showed low percentages of germination in earlier tests was subjected to scarification. These …

The Early Basis Of Subsistence Of Indians In The Plains Area, Joe D. Reed Jun 1941

The Early Basis Of Subsistence Of Indians In The Plains Area, Joe D. Reed

Biology ETDs

The fundamental purpose of this paper is to present the picture of early food economy among the Indians of the Plains. In order to accomplish this task the procedure has been to present: (1) a brief study of the tribal groups with special emphasis upon their early history and movements, followed by (2) a general picture of Plains food economy with regard to the sequence and tribal units. The important subjects within this second category have to do with buffalo utilization, agriculture and the gathering to wild plant food; (3) a listing of the various wild plant and animal foods …

Bulletin No. 298 - Wool Scouring Tests In Utah, Alma C. Esplin, Ralph W. Phillips, Milton A. Madsen Jun 1941

Bulletin No. 298 - Wool Scouring Tests In Utah, Alma C. Esplin, Ralph W. Phillips, Milton A. Madsen

UAES Bulletins

Wool, as it is shorn from the sheep, is known as grease wool. The first step in the manufacturing of wool is scouring, or removal of all grease and foreign matter. Within any given grade, as determined by length of staple and fineness of fiber, the yield of clean wool is the primary factor in determining the value of the original grease wool. The price of scoured or clean wool is multiplied by the percentage yield of clean wool to determine the value of the grease wool.

Bulletin No. 299 - Control Of Chlorisis In American Grapes, F. B. Wann Jun 1941

Bulletin No. 299 - Control Of Chlorisis In American Grapes, F. B. Wann

UAES Bulletins

The production of grapes is not a major agricultural industry in Utah, but in some areas of the state the crop is an important adjunct to the general fruit farm. This is particularly true in Washington County where European (vinifera) varieties are grown with considerable success, and in the north central counties where American (labrusca) varieties, especially Concord, are grown for the local markets. In this latter area the nutritional disease, chlorosis, is probably the most serious difficulty encountered in the development of a successful vineyard.

Bulletin No. 297 - Pale Western Cutworm, C. J. Sorenson, H. F. Thornley Jun 1941

Bulletin No. 297 - Pale Western Cutworm, C. J. Sorenson, H. F. Thornley

UAES Bulletins

THE PALE WESTERN CUTWORM ( Agrotis orthogonia Morr.) has caused periodic damage to dry-farm grains in Utah during the past 25 years. In the spring of 1916, entomologists of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station were asked to determine the cause of large bare spots occurring in fields of fall-planted wheat in the Indianola district of Sanpete County. A moderately severe infestation of pale western cutworm was found to be the causative agent. Pack reported that during the spring of 1929 this insect had inflicted serious damage to fall wheat at Fairview, Sanpete County.

The Geographic Distribution Of Azotobacter And Rhizobium Meliloti In Nebraska Soils In Relation To Certain Environmental Factors, H. B. Peterson, T. H. Goodding

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In this investigation a survey of Nebraska soils has been made in order to determine the distribution of the aerobic nonsymbiotic and symbiotic nitrogen fixers of the genera Azotobacter and Rhizobium respectively. In connection with this survey, some of the characteristics of the soils which may bring about this distribution were studied. Up to this time practically no research has been reported on the microflora of the soils of Nebraska. Hence there is little basis for predicting the activity of these organisms under environmental conditions as they exist here. It is hoped that this work will not only supply some …

Regeneration Of Native Midwestern Pastures Under Protection, J. E. Weaver, W. W. Hansen Jun 1941

Regeneration Of Native Midwestern Pastures Under Protection, J. E. Weaver, W. W. Hansen

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The origin of native midwestern pastures from virgin prairie and the degeneration of the prairie under long-continued grazing have been outlined in some detail in a previous bulletin (Weaver & Hansen 1941). During the last four years much study has been given to the converse phenomenon of the regeneration of native midwestern pastures when grazing animals were excluded. This universal phenomenon of the return of vegetation to something of its former natural condition is summed up in the term plant succession (Clements 1928). In connection with pastures derived from true prairie, it is of great practical as well as scientific …
