Active Projects In The United States And Canada Dealing With Grasshopper Research, H.C. Severin
Agricultural Experiment Station Entomology Pamphlets (1940-1952)
The sixteenth annual meetings of the Rocky Mountain Conference of Entomologists were held at Cameron Pass, Colorado, August 17 to August 21, 1941. Some time was devoted during these meetings to a discussion of the research work that is being done at the present with grasshoppers. It was felt by those participating in the discussions that it would be highly desirable if certain data were available concerning grasshopper research projects that are being actively investigated at the present time in the United States and in Canada. The author if this paper was asked to assume the responsibility of formulating an …

The Farm Labor Situation In South Dakota As Of October 17, 1942, Walter L. Slocum, Gabriel Lundy
Agricultural Experiment Station Mimeograph Pamphlets (1942)
This report is based principally on returns from 1101 farmers located in 28 South Dakota counties. The survey was conducted in an attempt to secure a representative and objective picture of the 1942 farm labor situation, the probable 1943 farm labor situation and the influence of present and probable labor and machinery shortages on farm production plans for 1943. The reports from the 1101 farmers cover only their farms.

Bulletin No. 306 - Report Of The Agricultural Experiment Station Utah State Agricultural College, Logan, R. H. Walker
UAES Bulletins
The agricultural experiment stations have contributed in a very material way to the progress of agriculture in the United States not only by the development of better crops and livestock and production practices, but, through basic research on the many and varied problems of agriculture, they have furnished an understanding of those principles upon which progress must depend.
The permanent value of these research centers to the progress of agriculture is no better illustrated than in the present emergency. The ability of farmers to meet the tremendous additional contributions to defense in the way of increased food supplies is dependent …

The Incidence Of Trichinella Spiralis In The Diaphragms Of Swine From The Louisville Abattoirs., Stuart Lyle Adams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trichinosis is a disease caused by the parasitic nematode Trichinella spiralis. When meat containing encysted larvae is consumed the cysts are dissolved by the action of the gastric juice in the stomach and the larvae migrate to the intestine where they mature, copulate and give birth to living young within a week of the original infection. The larvae enter the lymph spaces and are carried to the thoracic duct from which they reach the venous circulation and thence the arterial circulation by way of the heart and the pulmonary capillaries. From the arterial blood the larvae enter most of the …

Leaflet No. 7 Food For Victory
Leaflet No. 7 Food For Victory
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
One of the most important things families can do in the present emergency is to keep physically fit. Nutrition is a fundamental factor in physical fitness. Those families who are making a conscientious effort to improve their food habits are lining up for the nation's defense and ultimate victory.
If you are enrolled in the Victory Home and Garden program you are helping to insure yourself and others of an adequate supply of home produced foods through careful planning of production and preservation.
This March 1942 publication discusses the concern about preserving enough food for good health during times of …

Farm Tenure In South Dakota [:] Some Of Its Economic And Sociological Aspects, Alvin E. Coons, Walter L. Slocum
Agricultural Experiment Station Mimeograph Pamphlets (1942)
Almost without exception county land-use planning committees have listed tenancy among the more important land-use problems in South Dakota. This concern is due to the increase in tenancy, to the growing obstacles in the way of those who wish to become land owners and to some extent to the existence of unsatisfactory relationships between landlord and tenant. Tenancy, however, is only one aspect of the much broader land tenure picture which includes all phases of the control and use of the land. To become a farm owner has long been considered a desirable and legitimate ambition of farm operators, or …

Life History And Habits Of The Potato Flea Beetle In Western Nebraska, Roscoe E. Hill, H. Douglas Tate
Life History And Habits Of The Potato Flea Beetle In Western Nebraska, Roscoe E. Hill, H. Douglas Tate
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
In the potato-growing section of the North Platte Valley of western Nebraska, the difficulty of producing high quality potatoes frequently is greatly increased by the presence of destructive populations of the potato flea beetle Epitrix cucumeris Harris. Csually foliage injury by the adults is comparatively unimportant, but larval injury to tubers often greatly reduces the quality of the crop. Since prevention of tuber injury by the larvae has extended downward from the sides of the cages. Unless food was available in the form of plant growth within the cages, either green potato foliage or cut tubers were supplied as long …

History Of The Native Vegetation Of Western Kansas During Seven Years Of Continuous Drought, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
When the pioneers came from the East to make new homes in the Great Plains region, they found a dense cover of native vegetation. It was disturbed only by buffaloes, prairie dogs, other plains animals, Indians, and prairie fires. The Federal Government required that a certain amount of land be broken and put under cultivation, whether the land was obtained as a homestead or as a timber claim (McArdle and Costello, 1936).
The practice of the settlers was to break up a small tract of the prairie on which they could grow enough winter feed to sustain their cattle, horses, …
Threonine Deficiency In Hydrolysates Of Zein Prepared By Autoclaving, Raymond Borchers, John R. Totter, Clarence P. Berg
Threonine Deficiency In Hydrolysates Of Zein Prepared By Autoclaving, Raymond Borchers, John R. Totter, Clarence P. Berg
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
In a previous paper (Borchers and Berg, 1942) we showed that
autoclaving zein with sulfuric acid longer than necessary for complete
hydrolysis causes destruction and racemization; either of
these might account for the failure of such a hydrolysate to
promote growth in young rats when substituted for a hvdrolysate,
prepared by refiuxing, in a diet which produced moderate growth.
It seemed to us that this deterioration in the dietary protein might
well be the result primarily of essential amino acid deficiencies
which could be detected and overcome by appropriate supplementation.
Because threonine is known to be present in zein in …
The Effect Of Conditions Of Hydrolysis And Of Prolonged Heating Upon The Optical Rotation Of Sulfuric Acid Hydrolysates Of Zein, Raymond Borchers, Clarence P. Berg
The Effect Of Conditions Of Hydrolysis And Of Prolonged Heating Upon The Optical Rotation Of Sulfuric Acid Hydrolysates Of Zein, Raymond Borchers, Clarence P. Berg
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Some time ago we observed that a sulfuric acid hydrolysate of zein prepared in an autoclave at 165˚ did not support growth in young rats when it was supplemented with certain amino acids, even though the same amino acids, added to a hydrolysate prepared by refluxing, permitted moderate growth. Since the optical rotation of the autoclaved hydrolysate was lower than that of the refluxed, either destruction or racemization of essential constituents, or both, might have occurred. Loss of amino nitrogen and production of extra ammonia upon prolonged autoclaving of proteins with acids have been noted by Van Slyke (1912) …

The amount of tryptophane required for maintenance and growth is small (2). When an excess is supplied to some animals, kynurenic acid is excreted (3) and, under certain conditions, kynurenine also (4). Although these are quantitatively the most important of the known metabolic products of tryptophane, the amounts excreted in extensive tests in the dog and rabbit have usually accounted for less than half, more often for less than a third, of the tryptophane administered (4-6).

A Study Of The Flowering Plants Of The Plymouth-Bridgeport Area Of Amador And El Dorado Counties, California, Eldridge P. Lawrence
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Not until 1933 did the classification of Amador's flowering plants appeal to him as a project for future study. In that year, he had his first class in Taxonomic Botany at the University of California. Collecting hin this territory was a definite advantage to him as his acquaintance with the land owners enabled him to trespass and collect without question. HIs acquaintance with the territory also made it possible for him to know where many specimens of infrequent occurrence were to be found. Had he been unfamiliar with the territory certainly many of these would have been missed.

Grain Prices Received By Farmers Fob Aberdeen, South Dakota, Weber Peterson
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
The series of grain prices here presented are calculated from records of terminal market prices by deducting freight charges. In the absence of actual historical local price data this will serve many of the same purposes, subject to the limitations discussed on the inside back cover page. People interested in agriculture and efficient farming are very much concerned about prices. Unlike producers of branded products, farmers have been unable individually to control market prices through control of production. Since individual farmers have found that, in general, prices have been determined by forces beyond their control they have attempted to increase …

Climate And Crop Yields Sanborn County, G. Aaron Nelson, Virgil Wintrode
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
The County Pamphlet Series in Agricultural Economics is intended to make available to each county economic data concerning its farm history and present agricultural situation. It is hoped that these facts will be of use to county planning groups, individual farmers, research and extension workers and other persons interested in the agriculture of the counties. Each pamphlet will treat one subject for one county, and is to be released when completed. Pamphlets on various other economic subjects for the different counties will be prepared as soon as possible. A few copies of each pamphlet will be placed with the county …

Tillage Methods In Grasshopper Control, Gerald B. Spawn
Agricultural Experiment Station Entomology Pamphlets (1940-1952)
In the light of the present world food situation, the control of insects assumes a role of major importance in the agricultural program. Various insects, among which grasshoppers are one of the most notorious, attack our growing groups, upon which we depend for food. Others attack grains in storage; plant and animal products of many kinds; clothing and articles of furniture; and our domestic livestock. Man himself is not immune from attack as is borne out of by the epidemics of louse transmitted typhus which are today growing in extent in certain parts of Europe. The losses sustained by mankind …
