The Life History Of Side-Oats Grama Grass And Variations In Its Growth At Hays, Kansas, When Grown From Seed Produced In Different Parts Of The Great Plains Region, Harold Hopkins

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This study, which covered a period of two years, was originated in order to learn more of the merits and faults of side-oats grama grass as a revegetation and soil conservation plant in the Great Plains Region. It was suggested by the fact that there is a definite need for more knowledge about the native grasses which are potential revegetation plants of the Great Plains. An attempt was made to find as many growth habits of the species as possible, and a comparison was made in the growth, development, and forage production of plants grown from seed produced in different …

Stability Of Boulders On Slopes In The Finlay Mountains, Texas, Ben R. Howard Jr.

Field and Laboratory

In a recent note the writer and his associates showed that Indian petroglyphs might be used as criteria to indicate the stability of boulders resting on relatively steep slopes. Space did not permit a full account of the data which led to this suggestion. Accordingly, it is the purpose of this paper to amplify these data with a more complete description.

A Celestial Globe, John D. Boon May 1941

A Celestial Globe, John D. Boon

Field and Laboratory

Nature is deceptive. Things that appear to be true are often untrue. This point is well illustrated in the science of astronomy. The history of astronomy is strewn with rejected theories that were once held by wise men. Even today many false theories that should have been discarded long ago are believed by many people. Why is this true?

Studies On The Food Habits And Behavior Of The Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel (Citellus Tridecemlineatus Tridecemlineatus (Mitchell)) In The Laboratory, Mary Elizabeth Schmitt

Bachelors’ Theses

The scientific name first applied to the thirteen-lined ground squirrel was Scuirus tridecemlineatus by Mitchell in 1821. The same species has also been referred to as Spermophilus tridecemlineatus. At the present time it is recognized as belonging to the genus Cltellus and the species is divided into geographical races. Most of the middle western part of North America is the natural habitat of the thirteen-lined ground squirrel — Cltellus tridecemlineatus tridecemlineatus. So greatly have they increased with the expansion of cultivated areas and so vast is their destruction to growing crops that they have created a situation that must be …

The Effects Of A Carbohydrate Deficient Diet On The Mouse, Walter Rudolph Sala May 1941

The Effects Of A Carbohydrate Deficient Diet On The Mouse, Walter Rudolph Sala

Bachelors’ Theses

Deficient diets have been used extensively as the basis for zoological experiments concerning the metabolism, and dietary requirements of individual animals. The majority of this work has been carried on with the rat as the subject, and resulting external physical variations as the experimental aim. The writer used the mouse as his subject, but, since no literature was available concerning this animal, a few similar experiments performed on the rat will be cited.

The Thorax Musculature Of The Tenebrio Molitor, Francis L. Boyle May 1941

The Thorax Musculature Of The Tenebrio Molitor, Francis L. Boyle

Bachelors’ Theses

Very little, if any, work has been done on the thorax musculature in · the larvae stage of insects. The work that has been done has been confined mostly to the muscles of the abdominal region. From this work it has been found that extraordinary differences in muscle pattern occur often between larvae and adult stages of the same species. Since the muscles of all insects are more or less comparatively the same, what is true of one .will be generally true of another. There may be slight variations found between the abdominal segments and head segments but these differences …

Normal Variation In Growth Rate Of Mice, Helene Gysin May 1941

Normal Variation In Growth Rate Of Mice, Helene Gysin

Bachelors’ Theses

Although there has been extensive research carried on with growth variations of rats, there has been comparatively little done on this subject with respect to mice. Stefan Kopec (1938) carried out an experiment in which 24, 000 daily weights were taken of 3 female and 49 male black - and - white - spotted, white, and lilac mice, all sexually mature. He found that males showed non-cyclic weight increase with irregular fluctuations, while the females showed marked cycles of weight change. These
cycles appeared at the time when sexual maturity was attained; decreased in intensity with age, and ended with …

Wool Scouring Tests In Utah, Alma C. Esplin May 1941

Wool Scouring Tests In Utah, Alma C. Esplin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wool as it is shorn from the sheep, is known as grease wool. The first step in the manufacturing of wool is scouring, or removal of all grease and foreign matter. Within any given grade, as determined by length of staple and fineness of fiber, the yield of clean wool is the primary factor in determining the value of the original grease wool. The price of scoured or clean wool is multiplied by the percentage yield of clean wool to determine the value of the grease wool.

Analysis Of Rocky Mountain Mule Deer Kill Records Of Five-Year Deer Removal From The Logan River Drainage Of Northern Utah, Wilmur Bartels May 1941

Analysis Of Rocky Mountain Mule Deer Kill Records Of Five-Year Deer Removal From The Logan River Drainage Of Northern Utah, Wilmur Bartels

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Checking stations operated during the deer hunting season serve a two-fold purpose. It has long been recognized that such inspection stations aid greatly in the enforcement of hunting laws through the detection of illegal practices, and in many cases have been set up with this as a primary purpose. A more far reaching objective, however, is the collection of information to aid in the solution of the problems of maintenance of the range and the deer herd, and determination of the quality and quantity of the deer removal.
