Diphenyl Wraps For Oranges, F. Melville

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Diphenyl impregnated wraps have been successfully used on a commercial basis overseas for improving the keeping quality of oranges. Last year Mr. E. G. Hall, of the C.S.I.R.O. Laboratories, Homebush, kindly made available a quantity of diphenyl wraps of American origin and some of these were used in a small storage experiment with Washington Navel oranges.

Effects Of Rotenone And Some Common Herbicides On Fish-Food Organisms, Max Zischkale Jan 1952

Effects Of Rotenone And Some Common Herbicides On Fish-Food Organisms, Max Zischkale

Field and Laboratory

While considerable experimentation has been done on aquatic plant control and reduction of fish populations by chemicals, we know little of how these agents act on those smaller animals that serve as fish food…. I have attempted here to find what happens to a few of the smaller crustaceans and immature aquatic insects (as well as two of the common genera of aquatic snails) when standardized concentrations of the more commonly used herbicides are introduced into the water. I have also employed the fish poison, rotenone.

Notes On Megathymus Yuccae (Boisduval & Leconte), With Description Of A New Subspecies (Lepidoptera, Rhopalocera, Megathymidae), H. A. Freeman

Field and Laboratory

The original description of Eudamus? yuccae Bdv. & LeC. was presented in the form of a water color painting, "Histoire generale et iconographie des Lepidopteres et des Chenilles de I'Amerique Sep tentrionale, plate 70, 1833". There was no verbal description. Even though Boisduval and LeConte made no reference as to where their drawings came from, it is now known that John Abbot, of Georgia, prepared some of these, including the one of their yuccae.

Remarks On The Genus Cercocarpus In Texas, Rogers Mcvaugh Jan 1952

Remarks On The Genus Cercocarpus In Texas, Rogers Mcvaugh

Field and Laboratory

The small genus Cercocarpus (Rosaceae), of western North America, consists of two species (according to the most conservative estimate possible), or as many as 21 species (according to Rydberg, N. Am. Fl. 22: 418-424. 1913)….In Texas the genus Cercocarpus is found in three principal areas, namely in the Panhandle, in the Edwards Plateau, and in the trans-Pecos region. In all these areas the plants occur at widely scattered localities, usually in canyons or ravines or on isolated mountain ranges, and often separated by scores or even hundreds of miles from other localities where the same species occurs.

More Windmill Shut-Offs, "Martingale" .

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Since we printed the description of a type of automatic windmill shut-off used on Abydos Station, Port Hedland, in the issue of December, 1951, several readers of the "Journal" have written to describe alternative methods of pulling a mill "out of the wind" when the tank is filled. In a number of cases there were variations of the same idea, and in this article the main principles are described, together with some other ingenious gadgets which the author has encountered over the years.

A Report On Drosophila Collections In Nebraska, David D. Williams, Dwight D. Miller Jan 1952

A Report On Drosophila Collections In Nebraska, David D. Williams, Dwight D. Miller

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Until rather recently little has been known of the Drosophila species of Nebraska. Sturtevant (1921) lists Nebraska as one of seven states from which no Drosophila had been reported. Patterson and Wagner (1943) show that collections of Drosophila pseudoobscura had been made in the vicinities of Scottsbluff and Kearney, but no other Drosophila species are reported from Nebraska in their publication.

Insect Types In The Collections Of The University Of Nebraska State Museum, Martin H. Muma

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

In 1948 the insect collections at the University of Nebraska State Museum were placed in the care of the author. Prior to that date curatorial duties were assumed or assigned to full time teaching or research staff members. As would be expected under the latter circumstances, the organization of study material and types was neglected in many families and genera. Since 1948 type material, because of its intrinsic value, has received considerable attention. All primary and representative secondary types have been assembled in three museum cases and one slide cabinet for curatorial and study convenience.

Some Instructive Field Days, "Martingale" .

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Although fully conversant with the old newspaperman's adage which states that "Yesterday's news is the bath-heater fuel of today," we make no apology for including these reports of field days held after our December issue had gone to press. It is felt that they contain some useful lessons which, even at this late date, are deserving of emphasis.

Aids To Better Shearing, W. L. Mcgarry, J. Reilly, M. Butler

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

The demonstrations and instructional work in shearing that have been carried out in the farming areas have revealed the universal difficulty among learner-shearers in "getting a cut." Experience has shown that this absence of good cutting in handpieces has been due in large measure to the general lack of knowledge regarding grinding and the correct adjustment or "setting up" of the combs and cutters on the handpiece. Poor cutting has also resulted from the common practice of using combs and cutters that do not match, together with faulty handpiece maintenance. These and other factors leading to such poor results will …

Poison Plants - Pituri, C. A. Gardner, H. W. Bennetts

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Only a few of the drug-yielding plants found on their hunting grounds appear ^* to have been known to the Australian aborigines. Among those used and valued was the plant called "pituri" by the Central Australian tribes. The leaves of this plant, after drying and suitable preparation, were chewed as a narcotic.

Editorial - His Work Endures

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

In presenting the first issue of the "Journal of Agriculture" in its new form, it is with profound sorrow that we chronicle the passing of the Hon. Garnet Barrington Wood, M.L.C., Minister for Agriculture and the North-West, who died suddenly during a Cabinet meeting on January 2. The change of policy in the presentation of this Journal was keenly supported by the late Minister, and only a few hours before his death he had promised to write a foreword to the first issue, which was to have appeared on this page.

Insect Pests And Their Control, C. F. H. Jenkins Jan 1952

Insect Pests And Their Control, C. F. H. Jenkins

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Methods of insect control are sometimes classified under the four following headings—Quarantine, Cultural Methods, Biological Control and Chemical Treatments. Each method has its own particular part to play in preventing the spread and multiplication of insect pests and it is essential for maximum results that everyone—whether he be a commercial grower or a backyard gardener—has a general understanding of the principles involved.

The Improvement In Type Of South Dakota Dairy Cattle Through Artificial Breeding, Kenneth I. Gross Jan 1952

The Improvement In Type Of South Dakota Dairy Cattle Through Artificial Breeding, Kenneth I. Gross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body conformation is associated with function among all classes of livestock. Dairy cattle type deals with characteristics indicating ability to produce milk and butterfat economically along with breed character and other values of an aesthetic nature. In order to have economical milk and butterfat production, the dairy cow should possess that type of body conformation which is able to withstand the rigors of disease, reproduction and year after year milk production. A large percentage of dairy cattle sold in South Dakota and surrounding territory, whether for breeding purpose or commercial production, are evaluated primarily on the basis of their type. …

Cladophora glomerata, a green alga of the order Ulotrichales, family Cladophoraceae, is characterized by dich tomous branching, with ramuli ending in dense terminal fascicles…. Between October, 1949 and July, 1950, we collected this species in the Dallas area from Elm Fork of the Trinity River, and Bachman's, White Rock, and Ten Mile creeks.
