Stretch Your Food Dollar, Mildred Daniel Feb 1952

Stretch Your Food Dollar, Mildred Daniel

SDSU Extension Circulars

Whether the homemaker buys much or little food, she needs to know her market, the variety of foods offered arid how to make-economical choices. The increased variety of foods on the market today has made her choice more difficult. Proper choice is possible only when she understands (l) the food needs of her family, (2) how much money she ha to spend, and (3) the quality and cost of the products. She can be an important influence in bringing about better marketing conditions. Accurate information is her first need. This bulletin is intended to discuss with the homemaker her problems …

Bryology In Texas - 1. Mosses (Musci), Eula Whitehouse Jan 1952

Bryology In Texas - 1. Mosses (Musci), Eula Whitehouse

Field and Laboratory

The bryophyte flora of Texas has hardly been touched. Striking climatic extremes, with variations in time of extreme cold and rainfall, may cause an abundance of plants in one season and a failure in other years. The vast size of the state makes it difficult to cover favorable terrain at propitious seasons. However, the chief cause of the scarcity of collections may be due to the lack of resident collectors who have been and are interested in bryology.

Virus Diseases Of Cereal Crops In South Dakota, J.T. Slykhuis Jan 1952

Virus Diseases Of Cereal Crops In South Dakota, J.T. Slykhuis

Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)

Virus diseases of wheat, oats and barley have been reported from various parts of the world during the last three decades. In some instances viruses have proven be the real causes diseases formerly attributed to other agents. The earliest reports of a virus disease of wheat concerned a mosaicrosette disease first observed in southeastern Illinois in 1919. The disease caused by a soil-borne virus was later found in a number of localities in the eastern half of the United States, but to date it has not been reported west of the Missouri River. However, other mosaic disease of wheat have …

South Dakota Crop Varieties : Recommendations And Descriptions, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College Jan 1952

South Dakota Crop Varieties : Recommendations And Descriptions, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College

SDSU Extension Circulars

Growing adapted varieties insures more stable production and creates newer wealth: Using unadapted varieties often invites disaster and causes wide fluctuation in feed and grain supplies. It is recognized that there are two important and profitable markets for grain in the state, namely, (1) market through livestock feeding and (2) industrial uses. Therefore, it will be of great advantage to the producer if he will carefully choose superior varieties that fit his area and his market.

The Influence Of Electrolytes On Certain Characteristics Of Corn Starch, Arthur H. Hupp Jan 1952

The Influence Of Electrolytes On Certain Characteristics Of Corn Starch, Arthur H. Hupp

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The survey of literature shows that very little work has been done showing the effect of small amounts of electrolytes on the properties of native corn starch. The literature seems to be in agreement in that electrolytes do effect gelatinization when added in small amounts before cooking. Just what role the anion or cation plays seems to be controversial.

Varying amounts of electrolytes with different cations but the same anion were added to different concentrations of native corn starch before cooking. Viscosities were then taken after cooking under a standard cooking procedure. The results seem to indicate that the mono …

The Influence Of Urea & Melamine Formaldehyde Resins Upon Absorbency, Softness, & Dry Strength Characteristics Of Paper, H. B. Herman Jan 1952

The Influence Of Urea & Melamine Formaldehyde Resins Upon Absorbency, Softness, & Dry Strength Characteristics Of Paper, H. B. Herman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The literature is reviewed on urea and melamine formaldehyde resins and their possible effects upon softness, absorbency, and physical characteristics. The standard tests of these sheet properties are also defined and reviewed. Experimental work is described in which resin treated sheets were prepared and evaluated. The resultant data is evaluated from the standpoint of property variations and is graphically illustrated. Conclusions are drawn as to the feasibility of resin treatment for soft absorbent sheets.

The Retention Of Wet Strength Resins As Determined By The Kjeldahl Method, Walter J. Redmond Jan 1952

The Retention Of Wet Strength Resins As Determined By The Kjeldahl Method, Walter J. Redmond

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

True wet strength is not a gauge of water proofness of paper, but is a measure of the residual strength of the paper gauged by the mullen, tear, burst, and fold, after the paper has been completely soaked in water and the resistance to water penetration has been completely broken (1).

To increase the wet-strength of paper, a number of different resins may be applied, and these resins may be broadly classified as anionic or cationic in nature. Of these resins, three particular resins will be discussed, cationic melamine-formaldehyde, anionic urea-formaldehyde, and cationic urea-formaldehyde.

The Influence Of Beating Of Pulp On Fiber Length And Fiber Length Distribution, Rudolf Schmut Jan 1952

The Influence Of Beating Of Pulp On Fiber Length And Fiber Length Distribution, Rudolf Schmut

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

1. Introduction

Recent studies and researchers assume that certain relationships exist between different properties of pulp - such as between bulk, tearing resistance, bursting strength, tensile strength, freeness, and fiber length index. It has been found furthermore that such relations are different for different types of pulp and that some may even vary from pulp to pulp of the same type.

Lack Of Effect Of Plant Growth-Regulators On The Action Of Alpha-Amylase Secreted By Virus Tumor Tissue, M. K. Brakke, L. G. Nickell Jan 1952

Lack Of Effect Of Plant Growth-Regulators On The Action Of Alpha-Amylase Secreted By Virus Tumor Tissue, M. K. Brakke, L. G. Nickell

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

This report deals with the effect of certain synthetic plant growth-regulators on the activity of alpha-amylase (1) secreted by virus tumor tissue grown in vitro. Previous studies have lacked adequately controlled conditions and have been carried out with enzyme preparations obtained through the usual methods of destruction of cells. In this particular study (a) the assay employed to measure enzyme activity includes control of pH and temperature and (b) this enzyme, being secreted, is not subject to the drastic preparative procedures involving destruction of cellular structure usually necessary to obtain enzymes.
