Hyperparasitism, Michael G. Boosalis

Much of the research on hyperparasitism has been of a descriptive nature, based primarily on studies with dual cultures in synthetic media. The main contributions from these investigations concern the host range of the parasite, the mode of penetration and infection, and the morphological changes of the host and the parasite resulting from parasitism.

More recent studies on hyperparasitism emphasize the effect of environmental factors, especially nutrition, on the susceptibility of the host. Research on the physiology of hyperparasitism has been limited. Nevertheless, this important aspect of the problem should continue to receive increased attention as hyperparasitism is extremely amenable …

North American Trichodina from Carassius auratus, Lepomis cyanellus, L. macrochirus, Micropterus salmoides, and Rhinichthys atratulus have been studied by the silver-impregnation method and compared with European species. T. reticulata Hirschmann and Partsch, 1955, and T. (Foliella) subtilis Lorn, 1959, originally described from European goldfish, are herein recorded from North America also. T. fultoni Davis, 1947, from Lepomis cyanellus, Micropterus salmoides, and Rhinichthys atratulus is redescribed, and T. domerguei f. magna Lorn, 1961, described from European tench and gudgeon, is considered a synonym. It is the purpose of this study to review the cervical cancers, stained by Papanicolaou (1956:3-6) method, at Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo, Michigan, from September, 1956 to September 1963.

A previous analysis of the cytological screening at Borgess Hospital to ascertain the per coat accuracy in cervical diagnoses, was made by the investigator in June, 1961. This study, covering a four year period, draw attention to the fact that the patients with invasive carcinoma were in a much older age group than any other reported series studies. Mt. Tamalpais, 2571 feet in elevation, is found eighteen miles north of San Francisco in southern Marin County (see Plate 1). Despite its close proximity to a world port and metropolis, its slopes still display a wildness and natural beauty that have remained relatively unaltered as compared with other areas of the Bay Region and demonstrates ready accessibility to detailed ecological study.

In August 1959 Pacific Marine Station (P.M.S.) located at Dillon Beach, began a program of oceanographic study as a member of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (C.C.O.F.I.). The program continued throughout the summer of 1963 and consisted of a monthly hydrographic station and sampling the plankton at the head of Bodega Submarine Canyon, located twenty-five miles west of Bodega Bay. Two plankton tows were taken on each ocean run. One of the samples, along with collection and hydrographic data, was sent to Scripps Institute of Oceanography. The other sample was retained at P.M.S. and constitutes the material for the …

Gulf and Caribbean Research

This bibliography was originally intended as an adjunct to the author's current studies of anomalies in marine fish populations. A number of recent notes have shown, however, that present workers are largely unfamiliar with the rather extensive literature on fish teratology in respect to both particular anomalies and their previous recognition in a species or other taxon. There is an evident need for a compilation of the literature and it is hoped that the present work will fulfill its purpose by facilitating current and future studies in this important area of ichthyology.

In the coves and crevices at Natural Bridges State Park, Santa Cruz, California, one can find large masses of worm tubes constructed of sand. These tube masses often cover areas of several square feet. The tubes are usually straight and packed together in large masses. The individual tubes are about one-fourth of an inch in diameter and may be up to two and one-half feet long. The worm responsible for these masses of tubes is a small polychaete, Phragmatopoma californica.

Since the late 1950's, American education has been undergoing a critical evaluation and review. This review has brought about some changes in emphasis and an upgrading in science curricula. The American Institute of Biological Sciences, supported by the National Science Foundation, accepted major responsibility for the field of biology and established the Biological Science Curriculum Study (BSCS). H. Bentley Glass., Chairman of BSCS, states: "The aim of the Biological Science Curriculum Study is to place biological knowledge in its fullest modem perspective. Mites On Kangaroo Rats At The Nevada Test Site, Morris A. Goates

A systematic study of parasitic mites on kangaroo rats of two species at the Nevada Test Site was conducted from August 1959 to December 1961. The intent was to determine the kinds, numbers, seasonal occurrences and ecological relationships of mites in nuclear disturbed and contiguous undisturbed areas. A total of 1,256 rats from nine plant communities was examined.

The 6,208 mites collected represented 16 species including four undescribed. Fourteen were found on both kinds of rats. Considerably more rats were infested with chiggers than with mesostigmatids. Each species of mite occurred alone on its host at least 20% of the …

Biology ETDs

The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent of temperature and substrate dependence of brain tissue metabolism in hibernating animals. Possible cellular adaptations to low temperatures may indicate mechanisms possessed by the hibernator to maintain neural functions at low temperature. Oxygen consumption of brain tissue slices from homeothermic rats and active and hibernating ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis) was to describe the effect of temperature on rates of utilization of several substrates.
