A Study Of Puccinia Graminis And Cronartium Ribicola, Duane W. Hughes

Graduate Student Research Papers

It was the purpose of this study (1) to review the literary history of rusts in the United States and in the Northwest in particular, ( 2) to learn where rusts generally are found geographically, (3) to gain further information regarding the etiology of wheat rust (Puccinia graminis tritici), of white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola) and to become enlightened on other rusts, (4) to learn ways of controlling the two rusts, black stem rust of wheat and white pine blister rust, and to gain an appreciation of the economic importance of rust prevention.

Ecology Of Summer Aquatic Invertebrate Populations In A Marsh Area Of Utah Lake, David A. White Aug 1963

Ecology Of Summer Aquatic Invertebrate Populations In A Marsh Area Of Utah Lake, David A. White

Theses and Dissertations

Mud Lake marsh lies east of Utah Lake between the cities of Provo and Springville in Utah County. Since 1936 it has become a polluted, odiferous, silted area. A study was conducted on the aquatic invertebrates during the summer of 1962 (June 19 to September 20). An .01 meter2 bottom sampler was used at 30 random stations. Each station was sampled once a week. Water depth, mud, water and air temperatures were taken at each station. Dissolved oxygen (Winkler method) and ion resistance (Wheatstone bridge) were taken each day. The aquatic invertebrate community consisted of benthic (Diptera, Oligochaeta, Nematoda), interphashic …

The Effect Of Renal Artery Constriction On The Course Of Pregnancy In The Laboratory Rat, Julie Jones Medlin Jul 1963

The Effect Of Renal Artery Constriction On The Course Of Pregnancy In The Laboratory Rat, Julie Jones Medlin

Masters Theses

Introduction

Goldblatt and his associates (1934) were the first to show that persistent arterial hypertension could be produced by renal ischemia. They produced renal ischemia by two procedures which involved reduction of the blood supply to one or both kidneys by means of adjustable silver clamps and removal of the non-ischemic kidney where only one kidney was made ischemic. In one procedure the clamps were placed directly on the renal arteries. The second procedure produced renal ischemia indirectly by constriction of the abdominal aorta above and below the site of the origin of both renal arteries (1939). The adjustable silver …

Behavioral Interactions In A Fixed Aggregation Of Bobwhites, Jack Pierce Jul 1963

Behavioral Interactions In A Fixed Aggregation Of Bobwhites, Jack Pierce

Masters Theses

Introduction

Many observations have been made on the behavior in the field of the bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and of other gallinaceous birds. Stoddard (1950) has described in some detail various aspects of bobwhite behavior. Stokes (1963) conducted a laboratory study on the agonistic and sexual behavior of the chukar partridge. No behavioral studies, to the writer's knowledge, however, have been conducted on bobwhites under controlled environmental conditions. The birds used in the present study were housed in individual cages and were arranged in an artificially fixed aggregation (Fig. 1). The birds were maintained in this condition through the experimental period …

An Investigation Of The Influence Of The Suprapharyngeal Ganglion Upon Oxygen Consumption Of Resting Lumbrious Terrestris, William E. Elzinga Jul 1963

An Investigation Of The Influence Of The Suprapharyngeal Ganglion Upon Oxygen Consumption Of Resting Lumbrious Terrestris, William E. Elzinga

Masters Theses

Introduction

Because cephalization and centralization of the earthworm are more pronounced than in less complex forms, it is a relatively simple operation to remove a portion of the central nervous system to investigate its functions. However, the extripation of various parts of the central nervous system of the earthworm has been the subject of only a few research papers. It is the purpose of this study to investigate the influence of extripation of the suprapharyngeal ganglia on the oxygen uptake of the resting earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris.

Of the studies concerned with the influence of extirpation of some parts of the …

A Study Of The Morphology And Systematics Of The Genera Polydrusus And Scythropus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Gary L. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this study were 1) to further clarify the status of the genera Polydrusus and Scythropus and 2) to redescribe and elucidate the morphology and distribution of the species of Scythropus in order to better facilitate their identification. Some 1650 specimens were used in the study and about 300 of these were critically examined for morphological variations of the head, beak, antennae, thorax, elytra, abdomen, integument, legs, genitalia, and eighth tergite and ninth segment of the male. Over one hundred genitalia were dissected and critically examined for good characters. The male genitalia were the most reliable single characters …

Seasonal Study Of Mites On Deer Mice (Peromyscus Maniculatus) In A Chaparral Community, Donald B. Ash Jul 1963

Seasonal Study Of Mites On Deer Mice (Peromyscus Maniculatus) In A Chaparral Community, Donald B. Ash

Theses and Dissertations

The parasitic mites on mammals living in the chaparral community of Utah are practically unknown ecologically. Keegan (1953) was the first to publish on parasitic mites from Utah. He listed mites of 12 species and 9 genera from Tooele and Juab counties from hosts which included one Peromyscus truei, five P. crinitus, and 20 P. maniculatus. Brennan and Beck (1955) published on the chiggers of Utah and included a key to 38 species. Allred (1954, 1956, 1957, 1958) studied the geographical distribution, seasonal occurrence, and biology of mites found on mice of the genus Peromyscus in Utah.

Microenvironmental Conditions Of The Day Resting Places Of Cottontail Rabbits, Orin Gelderloos Jul 1963

Microenvironmental Conditions Of The Day Resting Places Of Cottontail Rabbits, Orin Gelderloos

Masters Theses

This investigation was concerned with the microenvironment of the daytime resting places of cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) in southwestern Michigan. Many studies have been made of the habitat (Friley, 1955), cover (Hendrickson, 1938; Leopold, 1942; Linduska, 1947), food (Trippensee, 1938; Dice, 1945), and home ranges (Haugen, 1942) of cottontail rabbits. The purpose of this investigation was to search for possible correlations between various physical factors and the daytime activity and resting places of cottontails.

Comparative Ecology Of Three Species Of New Mexican Garter Snakes (Genus Thamnophis), Eugene D. Fleharty Jun 1963

Comparative Ecology Of Three Species Of New Mexican Garter Snakes (Genus Thamnophis), Eugene D. Fleharty

Biology ETDs

The ecological literature states that closely related species that occur in the same ecological area undergo competition until one out-competes the other (or until each becomes restricted to a very specific niche). Darwin (1859) stated that species of the same or related genera which had nearly the same structure and habits undergo severe competition. More recently this view has been restated in what is known as "Gause's Law" (Gause 1934; Gilbert, Reynoldson, and Hobart 1952). Bagenal (1951) emphasized the difficulties in determining what is meant by the same habitat or the same community. Actually, as Bagenal (Ibid.) pointed out, because …

An Ecological Comparison Of The Ben Franklin And Clear Creek Local Molluscan Faunas In Texas, E. P. Cheatum, Don Allen

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

Radiocarbon tests date the Ben Franklin local fauna as Wisconsin, and the Clear Creek local fauna as Sangamon. The contrast between the mollusks of these two faunas is remarkable, as shown by the following table.

Late Pleistocene Amphibians And Reptiles Of The Clear Creek And Ben Franklin Local Faunas Of Texas, J. Alan Holman Jun 1963

Late Pleistocene Amphibians And Reptiles Of The Clear Creek And Ben Franklin Local Faunas Of Texas, J. Alan Holman

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The Clear Creek local fauna of Denton County, Texas (Pleistocene: Sangamon) has yielded bones representing at least 23 species of amphibians and reptiles. All of these live in the area today, with the exception of Arizona elegans, which occurs about 45 miles to the west, and Geochelone, which is extinct. The fossils represent two distinct ecological situations: a pond, and its sluggish, marshy, feeder-creek or slough; and an open, sandy, xerophytic, terrestrial situation. The general climate of the area may have been somewhat more arid than at present. The number of extinct amphibians and reptiles (four percent of the fauna) …

A Review Of The Genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, Robert L. Rausch, George S. Nelson Jun 1963

A Review Of The Genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, Robert L. Rausch, George S. Nelson

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

1. The genus Echinococcus Rudolphi, 1801, is reviewed. The recorded measurements of all species are shown in tables, and their taxonomic status is discussed.

2. Three species of Echinococcus can be distinguished by morphological criteria and are considered valid: E. granulosus, E. multilocularis and E. oligarthrus. The status of E. felidis and E. patagonicus is uncertain, but both may be conspecific with E. granulosus. Six species are considered synonyms of E. granulosus: E. cameroni, E. intermedius, E. longimanubrius, E. lycaontis, E. minimus and E. ortleppi.

Echinococcus Infections In Man And Animals In Kenya, George S. Nelson, Robert L. Rausch Jun 1963

Echinococcus Infections In Man And Animals In Kenya, George S. Nelson, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

1. Hydatid cysts are found in more than 30 per cent of all cattle, sheep and goats in Kenya, but the disease is prevalent in man only in the semi-desert area of Turkana. Up to the time of the present investigation the life-cycle of the parasite in East Africa had not been studied, but it was suggested that wild carnivores, such as hyenas and jackals, might be the main hosts of the adult worms.

2. One hundred and forty-three carnivores, representing 23 species, have been examined. Echinococcus adults were found in 27 out of 43 domestic dogs (Canis familiaris …

Measurement Of Cardiac Output In Man, At Rest And During Exercise, By An Indirect Fick Co2 Method, Orlando Thomas Garza Jun 1963

Measurement Of Cardiac Output In Man, At Rest And During Exercise, By An Indirect Fick Co2 Method, Orlando Thomas Garza

Biology ETDs

In the field of medical science it is necessary to understand the life processes; their normal levels, responses and mechanisms before interpretation of changes caused by disease or stress can be made with any degree of accuracy. This paper deals with a method of obtaining cardiac output values, and is not meant to be a discussion of the highly involved mechanics controlling the cardiac output., but a cursory review of these mechanics is warranted.

Parasitic Mites Of Kangaroo Rats Of The Nevada Atomic Test Site, Morris A. Goates

Theses and Dissertations

A systematic study of parasitic mites on kangaroo rats at the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, was conducted from August, 1959, to December, 1961. The intent was to determine their kinds, numbers, seasonal occurrence, and ecological relationship with Dipodomys merriami merriami Mearns and Dipodomys microps occidentalis Hall and Dale in nuclear disturbed and contiguous undisturbed areas. Study areas were established in three major valleys -- Jackass Flats, Yucca Flat, and F renchman Flat.

Ectoparasites Of Rabbits Collected In Grant County, New Mexico, Paul Henry Rodriguez May 1963

Ectoparasites Of Rabbits Collected In Grant County, New Mexico, Paul Henry Rodriguez

Biology ETDs

Nine obligate ectoparasites were taken from 28 Sylvilagus auduboni and 14 Lepus californicus collected in Grant County, New Mexico, from April 15, 1962, to December 24, 1962.

Cediopsylla inaeqaulis inaequalis and Hoplosyllus glacialis affinis, which may be important in the epidemiology of plague, were found to be primarily restricted to S. auduboni. Echidnophaga gallinacea, which is usually found on birds, Pulex irritans, and Meringis dipodomys, which is common on wild rodents, proved to be incidental ectoparasites of this species of rabbit. Thirteen H. glacialis affinis and five E. gallinacea were taken from six L. californicus.

The continental rabbit …

Attempt To Determine The Pattern Of Chromosomal Inheritance In The Intermediate Iris, Theodore Kellogg May 1963

Attempt To Determine The Pattern Of Chromosomal Inheritance In The Intermediate Iris, Theodore Kellogg

Senior Scholar Papers

Intermediate iris containing 44 chromosomes have a low rate of fertility. This paper is an attempt to determine the reasons for this low fertility through a study of the chromosomal inhertiance of two intermediate iris that have been successfully hybridized. There are no literary records showing that the results of crossing two chromosome intermediate iris, so most of this paper is a report of lab work.
