Two new species of feather mites are described: Proctophyllodes tenericaulus from Turdus viscivorus L. (Turdidae) and Galerida cristata (L.) (Alaudidae) and Proctophyllodes emberizae from Emberiza melanocephala Scopoli and E. hortulana (L.) (Fringillidae).

Keys to the females and males and diagnoses of the American subgenera of the genus Andrena are presented in this paper. Previously described subgenera recognized in this work are as follows: Callandrena Cockerell, Scaphandrena Lanham, Plastandrena Hedicke, Parandrena Robertson, Dactylandrena Viereck, Andrena Fabricius, Iomelissa Robertson, Oligandrena Lanham, Hesperandrena Timberlake, Micrandrena Ashmead, Gonandrena Viereck, Opandrena Robertson, Cnemidandrena Hedicke, Simandrena Perez, Thysandrena Lanham, Taeniandrena Hedicke, Ptilandrena Robertson, Trachandrena Robertson, Xanthandrena Lanham, Diandrena Cockerell, Leucandrena Hedicke, Melandrena Perez, Gymnandrena Hedicke, Scoliandrena Lanham, Onagrandrena Linsley and MacSwain. The following five new subgenera are described: Eremandrena, Larandrena, Tylandrena, Geandrena, Chaulandrena.

Tarsocheylidae, A New Family Of Prostigmatic Mites (Acarina), Warren T. Atyeo, Edward W. Baker

The new family is based on two genera, Tarsocheylus Berlese, 1904 and Hoplocheylus, new genus. The species included are: Tarsocheylus paradoxus Berlese, 1904, Hoplocheylus atomarius (Berlese), 1913, H. johnstoni, n. sp., H. aethiopicus (Cooreman), 1951, H. longispinus, n. sp., and H. cliscalis, n. sp.

Photoperiodism And Other Factors Affecting The Germination Of Statoblasts Of Lophopodella Carteri (Hyatt), Elizabeth Ann Bergin

Sample groups of the statoblasts of Lophopodella carteri (Hyatt) were pretreated by drying, cooling, freezing, immersion in water and combinations of these conditions. Then, they were subjected to 24-hour dark and 8, 12, and 24 hour light photoperiods . A control was maintained under natural dark-light (day-night) conditions. The analysis of variance and Newman-Keuls tests were used to analyze the data. The cool wet pretreatment gave the best germination for the statoblasts. For the photoperiods, statoblasts in 8 and 12 hour light periods and the control had the highest germination rate.

Approximately 120 years ago in Europe is was learned that certain fungi liberated arsenous gases when they were grown on substrates containing arsenic. This was especially apparent when certain molds grew on paste on wall paper in damp rooms, converting arsenic-containing pigments in the wall paper into a gas with a garlic-like odor. This resulted in numerous cases of arsenic poisoning of people living in these rooms; some of these people died. During an investigation of the area of the Whitefish Lakes, it was noted that two definite types of forest communities existed, a conifer forest and a hardwood forest. It was also noted that each type appeared on different parent soil materials. The problem was actually divided into four parts as follows: How well did the vegetation and the parent material correlate? What was the plant succession in the area? How was the plant succession affected by the parent material? And, how was the resulting soil affected by the vegetation?

Three Southeastern Minnesota Lakes As Possible Habitat For Hexagenia Mayflies, James R. Erickson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Three small lakes near Winona, Minnesota, were sampled to determine if they supported populations of Hexagenia mayfly nymphs. Hexagenia nymphs were rare in Lake Winona and the Gravel Pit, and none was found in Crooked Slough. A low dissolved oxygen content at the mud-water interface is probably the limiting factor in Lake Winona and Crooked Slough. The limiting factor in the Gravel Pit is probably the bottom type.
