Antibiogram Patterns Of Primary Isolates Of Staphylococcus Aureus In Relation To Enzymatic Activity And Phage Type, John Kevin Hall
Antibiogram Patterns Of Primary Isolates Of Staphylococcus Aureus In Relation To Enzymatic Activity And Phage Type, John Kevin Hall
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The genus Staphylococcus is a member of the family Micrococcaceae which includes three other general Micrococcus, Planococcus and Aerococcus. The four which have the same morphology and gram reaction may be distinguished from each other on the basis of arrangement, the utilization of glucose, the presence or abscence of cytochromes, oxygen requirements, motility and the G + C content of DNA. (Table I), The genus Staphylococcus includes three species; S. aureus, S. epidermidis and S. saprophyticus. These may be distinguished from each other on the basis of coagulase production, mannitol utilization, production of alpha toxin, presence of heat resistant endonucleases, …
Intraproblem Retention During Learning-Set Acquisition In Bluejays (Cyanocitta Eristata), Alan C. Kamil, John E. Maulden
Intraproblem Retention During Learning-Set Acquisition In Bluejays (Cyanocitta Eristata), Alan C. Kamil, John E. Maulden
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Recent experiments have shown that bluejays and rhesus monkeys experienced in object-discrimination learning set (ODLS) exhibit a rapid decline in performance when a retention interval is inserted between successive trials of individual ODLS problems (Bessemer & Stollnitz, 1971; Kamil, Lougee, & Shulman, 1973). This intraproblem retention loss (IRL), or forgetting, has been interpreted as reflecting the importance of relatively transient memory traces for events of previous trials of the ODLS problem as determinants of choice behavior on the current trial of the same problem. According to this model, these memory traces function as discriminative stimuli in a conditional discrimination which …

Marginal Learning-Set Formation By The Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos), Maxwell W. Hunter Iii, Alan C. Kamil
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Each of three hand raised crows received 300 learning set problems in a modified WGTA using three-dimensional stimuli. Consistent within-problem learning was obtained but learning set formation was minimal. An analysis of hypothesis behavior (Levine, 1959) revealed a strong tendency towards position and stimulus preferences. These results raise the possibility of large species differences in learning set formation within the family Corvid

Lipid Metabolism During Bacterial Growth, Sporulation, And Germination: Kinetics Of Fatty Acid And Macromolecular Synthesis During Spore Germination And Outgrowth Of Bacillus Thuringiensis, Kenneth W. Nickerson, John De Pinto, Lee A. Bulla Jr.
Bulla Jr.
Papers in Microbiology
The timing and kinetics of fatty acid synthesis are delineated for Bacillus thuringiensis spore germination and outgrowth by analyzing [U-14C ]acetate and [2-3H ]glycerol incorporation into chloroform-methanol-extractable and trichloroacetic acid-precipitable lipids. In addition to measurement of pulsed and continuous labeling of fatty acids, monitoring the incorporation of radioactive phenylalanine, thymidine, and uridine from the onset of germination through first cell division provides a profile of biochemical activities related to membrane differentiation and cellular development. Upon germination, ribonucleic acid synthesis is initiated, immediately followed by rapid and extensive fatty acid synthesis that in turn precedes protein, deoxyribonucleic …

Fine Structure Of The Oocyst Walls Of Isospora Serini And Isospora Canaria And Excystation Of Isospora Serini From The Canary, Serinus Canarius L., Clarence A. Speer, Donald W. Duszynski
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Oocysts of Isospora serini and Isospora canaria, from the canary Serinus canarius, were broken, added to a cell suspension, fixed in Karnovsky's fluid, and studied in the electron microscope. The oocyst wall of each species had an electron- lucent inner layer, a more osmiophilic middle layer and an outer layer of electron-lucent (I. serini) or electron-dense material interspersed with some electron-lucent material (I. canaria). A few, relatively large lipid-like bodies were present in the outer or middle layer of the oocyst wall of I. canaria. As many as 9 membranes were present in …

Taxonomy And Zoogeography Of Lemmus Spp. (Rodentia: Arvicolinae), With Notes On Laboratory-Reared Lemmings, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Lemmings of the genus Lemmus Link, 1795, have long attracted interest because of the high numerical densities attained at intervals by their populations. In earlier times, in northern Europe, such events seemed so remarkable as to be explained by some as a consequence of the animals' having fallen from the sky (HaGSTROM 1749). During the last 25 years, lemmings have been the object of intensive ecological investigation in Eurasia and North America, although there has been no consensus concerning their taxonomic relationships. In 1959, a colony of brown lemmings from arctic Alaska was established in our laboratory, primarily to provide …

Rabies In Experimentally Infected Bears, Ursus Spp., With Epizootiologic Notes, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Ten black bears, Ursus americanus Pallas, and three brown bears, U. arctos Linnaeus, were inoculated with rabies virus from naturally infected foxes in Alaska. The bears were more resistant than canine species, requiring at least 1,000 MLD50 of virus for infection. Low titres or negative results were obtained in salivary glands titrated in mice. Clinical course of the disease, post mortem findings, and microscopic lesions are described. Microscopic lesions were more· severe in brown bears, in which the inflammatory response was distinguished by the presence of numerous eosinophils in the perivascular infiltrate and among cells diffusely infiltrating the parenchyma. …

Prevalence And Potential Vectors Of Haemoproteus In Nebraska Mourning Doves, Ellis C. Greiner
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Three hundred and nine mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) from Lancaster County, Nebraska, were examined for species of Haemoproteus. Older doves possessed higher Haemoproteus prevalences than younger doves. Mean total prevalence for each dove age group was as follows: adults, 61% H. sacharovi and 83% H. maccallumi; immatures, 35% H. sacharovi and 42% H. maccallumi; and nestlings, 31 % H. sachairovi and 16% H. maccallumi. Yearly prevalences were less variable in mature doves than in immature and nestling doves. No correlation between nestling and parent Haemoproteus infections were observed, but nestmates in 10 or 18 …

Reuse Limits And Regeneration Of Solutions For Cleaning Dairy Equipment, S. M. Kulkarni, R. G. Arnold, R. B. Maxcy
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Usable life of cleaning solutions in a model heat processing unit was studied by evaluation of the nature and quantity of residue remaining on the surface of the equipment after cleaning. Lipoidal residue was recovered from equipment surfaces by ether rinsing. A surface displacement technique was used to quantify the lipoidal material, which was characterized by gas-liquid chromatographic analyses of triglycerides and fatty acid methyl esters. Effects of factors, such as water hardness, rinse water temperature, cleaning solution additives and acid versus alkaline cleaners also were investigated in relation to overall cleaning efficiency. After evaluating limits of reuse of cleaning …
Digenetic Trematodes In Cephalopods, Robin M. Overstreet, F. G. Hochsberg
Digenetic Trematodes In Cephalopods, Robin M. Overstreet, F. G. Hochsberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
In addition to listing digenetic trematodes found in cephalopods, we provide descriptions of adults of Derogenes varicus and larvae of Lecithochirium microstomum, Lecithochirium sp., Elytrophallus sp., Monilicaecum sp., and Stephanochasmus sp. Only the first had been described previously from cephalopods, and the last represents the first record of a nonpiscine second intermediate host for a species of Stephanochasmus. We found 15 species infected, which brings to nearly 30 the total number of squids, octopods, and cuttlefish reported to be infected with Digenea. Many early records of trematodes in cephalopods are actually reports of Monogenea, Cestoda, or reproductive organs …

What happens in the lung is that air meets blood. Figure 1 shows the lung's architecture. Focus your attention upon the smallest scale structures which are the termini of the air passages. These are the alveolar air sacs or, simply, alveoli. The inhalation/exhalation actions of the lung, alternately, flood these alveoli with atmospheric air and expel its oxygen-poor/carbon dioxide-rich replacement. Figure (2a) depicts, in a somewhat simplified manner, these alveoli with their appended venous blood suppliers, the pulmonary arteries. Figure {2b} shows the structure of the blood distribution system over a small, typical portion of the alveolar surface in much …

Marine Leeches Of The Eastern United States And The Gulf Of Mexico With A Key To The Species, Roy T. Sawyer, Adrian R. Lawler, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Unlike the Eurasian marine leeches (Johansson, 1896; Selensky, 1915; Herter, 1935; Vasileyev, 1939; Knight-Jones, 1961; Sawyer, 1970; Soós, 1965), those from North America comprise an unusually neglected group, due primarily to the bewildering taxonomy of the members. Most early descriptions were brief, ambiguous, and concerned only with superficial characters. Some of the nominal species reported from the eastern United States and Canada are unrecognizable today, thus perpetuating nomenclatural confusion.
We attempt to analyze critically the marine leeches from Newfoundland to Texas, with emphasis on those of the southern states from Virginia to Mississippi. An illustrated dichotomous key and a diagnosis …

The Uptake, Distribution, And Depuration Of ¹⁴C Benzene In Northern Anchovy (Engraulis Mordax) And Striped Bass (Morone Saxatilis), Nina Day Hirsch
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The uptake, distribution and depuration of a water soluble, mono-aromatic hydrocarbon contained in petroleum and refined products was studied in two species of marine fish, Nature northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) and juvenile striped bass (Horone saxatilis) were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of 14c benzene for 48 hours. Residues in tissues exhibiting a high lipid content (non-metabolic pathway) or representing apparent major metabolic sites were measured during the exposure and afterwards when the fish were transferred to clean seawater. Fish exhibited a rapid uptake over a wide range of benzene concentrations in the water column. Accumulation in anchovy was considerably …
The Thiourea Carrier In Human Erythrocytes, Beny Leon Rozenbaum
The Thiourea Carrier In Human Erythrocytes, Beny Leon Rozenbaum
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this work is to determine the characteristics of the thiourea carrier in human erythrocytes taking into consideration the two parameters of transfer (half-saturation constant and maximum transport rate) and the energy of dissociation of the carrier complex. In the president experiment, the problem has been approached by observing the exit of thiourea, from cells previously equilibrated with thiourea, into a saline medium containing different concentrations of thiourea. The most important advantages of this method are the rapidity of the exit process and the fact that it can be easily measured.

A Photomicrographic Guide To The Saprolegniaceae Of Illinois, Ronald L. Butler
Masters Theses
There is a paucity of information concerning the occurrence and distribution of the Saprolegniaceae of Illinois. These fungi, commonly called "water molds", are of particular interest as many are potential parasites of fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic plant and animal life. It is of considerable interest to students of the fungi and of practical value to the fisheries biologists and environmentalists to have available a means of identification for these organisms.
This paper provides a descriptive and photomicrographic account of the Saprolegniaceae of Illinois. Included herein are dichotomous keys to the genera of this family as well as generic descriptions …

Pelagic Cnidaria Of Mississippi Sound And Adjacent Waters, W. David Burke
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Investigations were made in Mississippi Sound and adjacent waters from March 1968 through March 197 1 to record the occurrence and seasonality of planktonic cnidarians. About 700 plankton samples were taken from estuarine and oceanic areas. From these samples, 26 species of hydromedusae were identified, 12 of which were collected from Mississippi Sound. In addition, 25 species of siphonophorae were identified from Mississippi waters, although only 6 species were collected in Mississippi Sound. From an examination of about 500 trawl samples taken during this period, 10 species of Scyphozoa were found in Mississippi waters, 6 of which occurred in Mississippi …

The Blue Crab Fishery In Mississippi, Harriet M. Perry
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Analysis of 670 trawl, seine and marsh net samples collected from July 1971 through June 1973 provided data on the distribution and abundance of blue crabs in Mississippi Sound. Highest average catches were associated with salinities between 5.0 and 15.0 ppt (parts per thousand) and temperatures between 20.0 and 25.0oC.
Young crabs congregated in dredged navigational channels and in the marshes that fringe the bays and coastline. Maximum numbers were captured over soft mud bottoms.
Peak numbers of zoeae occurred in the summer and fall. Megalopae were collected in all months. Early crab stages appeared throughout the year. …

Solubilization Of Acetylcholinestrerae From Subcellular Components Of Mammalian Brain Tissue, John E. Taylor
Solubilization Of Acetylcholinestrerae From Subcellular Components Of Mammalian Brain Tissue, John E. Taylor
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Since all chemical and electrical input into the cell / occurs via its plasma membrane, many pharmacological agents and hormones initiate their effects by interacting with receptor sites on the plasma membrane or by passing through the cell membrane and interacting with other membranes within the cell. Generally, the precise mechanisms by which these events occur remain relatively unclear. It was thought for many years that the cell membrane was a relatively static structure which allowed molecules to enter the cell at a rate dependent upon their degree of lipid solubility. However, more recently an increasing body of evidence suggests …

Population Ecology, Desiccation, And Food Resources With Respect To Angle Of Substrate For Two Limpets, Collisella (Acmaea) Digitalis And Collisella (Acmaea) Scabra, Linda Susan Collins
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Two common limpets, Collis~ (Acmaea) digitalis and Collisella (Acmaea) scabra have overlapping distributions in the upper int.ertidal .spray zone. Haven (1971) found that Q. digitalis is more abundant on vertical surfaces while Q. scabra dominates horizontal surfaces. He assumed this preference to be due to differential abilities to withstand desiccation. In this study I report field work demonstrating a high correlation between the-ratio of abundance of Q. digitalis/ Q. scabra and angle of slope of substrate. Length (mm) of Q. scabra declines linearly with angle, but Q. digitalis shows no such trends. Results of laboratory measurements of angle of substrate …

Reproductive Ecology And Population Dynamics Of Two Sympatric Species Of Macoma (Bivalvia), John Gibson Rae Iii
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Populations of the sympatric intertidal bivalves, Macoma secta and M. nasuta are compared as to reproductive ecology and population dynamics. Histological examination of seasonal gonadal changes indicate that both species undergo dormancy in the winter months and rapid gamete proliferation in the spring. However, the timing of spawning differs. The M. secta population synchronously spawned in August while the M. nasuta population spawned lightly in late spring and more heavily in the fall. Fecundity estimates indicate M. nasuta adds 140% of winter weight in gametes and M. secta only adds 43% of winter weight in gametes. Spat fall was detected …
