Actions Of Mammalian Gonadotrophins In Female Anolis Carolinensis (Green Anole) Within Selected Parameters Of Photoperiod And Temperature, Frank Loving Holt Jr.
Master's Theses
The effects of either porcine FSHt equine LH, or both combined upon the pregametic a.nd gametic phases of the ovarian cycle of Anolis carolinensis {green anole)were investigated in animals maintained under one of three photothermal. regimens: 3 hours light at 15 C; 14 hours light at 15 C; or 14 hours light at 32 C.
Increases in pre-vitellogenic follicle diaaeter and ovarian weight were significantly greater at 32 C than at 15 c. A trend towards decreased numbers of atretic follicles with increased gonadotrophin dosage occurred in response to 14 hours light at 32 C. Gonadotrophin dosages which stimulated vitello …

Effects Of The Toxins Of Lophopodella Carteri (Ectoprocta), On Blood Lactate And Electrolytes Of Lepomis Macrochirus (Bluegill), Robert Fisher Dance
Master's Theses
Specimens of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) were exposed to homogenates of Lophopodella carter, an ectoproct that contains substances toxic to some gilled vertebrates. The homogenates caused significant decreases in blood Na+ and Cl - and a significant increase in lactate. Potassium levels were unaffected. It is proposed that these changes in blood. properties were caused by damage to ion transport mechanisms of the gill epithelium.
Raising Wood Ducks, Richard L. Nelson
Raising Wood Ducks, Richard L. Nelson
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications
Numbered among Nature's most colorful creatures, wood ducks willingly accept a helping hand from man in establishing new homes. These birds adapt well to suitable habitat, and you can play an important part in bringing the wood duck to locations where they do not now nest. For groups or individuals who are willing to expend the effort necessary to undertake a wood duck restoration project anti see it to completion, it is an exceptional gift from today's generation to those of decades and centuries to come. Many areas in Nebraska provide suitable wood duck habitat, but do not have a …

Federal And State Regulations Pertaining To Systematic Collections. I. A Case Of Inadvertent Violation Of Federal Regulations, Jerry R. Choate, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
On 25 April 1975, at the twenty-second annual meeting of the Southwestern Association of Naturalists (SWAN), at the University of Oklahoma Biological Station, President Keith A. Arnold appointed Jerry Choate to investigate current regulations pertaining to collection and transport of scientific specimens in the region of representation (including Mexico) or SWAN. This charge involves both Federal and State laws, several of which are undergoing change and many of which doubtlessly are not familiar to the membership of SWAN. In order that SWAN members might be made aware of these regulations and not unwittingly commit violations, it was decided that SWANEWS …

The Morphology Of The Eye Of The Purple Shore Crab, Hemigrapsus Nudus, Sharon E. Heisel
The Morphology Of The Eye Of The Purple Shore Crab, Hemigrapsus Nudus, Sharon E. Heisel
Dissertations and Theses
A structural analysis of the compound eye of Hemigrapsus nudus expands the basis of functional analysis of decapod Crustacean eyes. Contradictory evidence for disintegration of rhabdomeric microvilli in the absence of light prompted observation of H. nudus eyes after 146 days in darkness.
Eyes were fixed with formalin and glutaraldehyde and post fixed with osmium tetroxide for electron and light microscopy. Light- dark-adapted eyes were also observed with hot water fixation and paraffin embedment.
The eye of H. nudus is typical of decapod Crustacean compound eyes. Corneagenous cells underlie the transparent cuticle cone cells secrete the composite crystalline cone which …

A Comparison Of Petersen Tags And Biological Stains Used With Internal Tags As Marks For Shrimp, B.D. Welker, S.H. Clark, C.T. Fontaine, R.C. Benton
Gulf and Caribbean Research
During May 20-31, 1968, 14,301 brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) were marked and released in Biloxi Bay, Mississippi. Of these 7,023 were marked by injection with a combination of Niagara Sky Blue 6B stain and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) internal tags and 7,278 were marked with Petersen tags. The objectives of this experiment were to compare the two methods as marks for shrimp and to obtain information on growth rates and migrations. Eighteen weeks after release, 1,942 (28%) of those marked with the biological stain-internal tag combination and 2,286 (31%) of those marked with Petersen tags had been recovered. The …

Donnan Potential Of Rabbit Skeletal Muscle Myofibrils I: Electrofluorochromometric Detection Of Potential, S. P. Scordilis, H. Tedeschi, C. Edwards
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The fluorescence of the dye CC 6 [(3 hexyl 2 (3 hexyl 2 benzoxazolinylidene) 1 propenyl) benzoxazolium iodide] was shown to indicate Donnan potentials in rabbits skeletal muscle myofibrils. These results are in aggreement with previously published work in which the potentials were measured with microelectrodes on glycerol extracted muscle fibers. The magnitude of the Donnan potential of the myofibrils was shown to be dependent on the state (rigor or relaxed) of the system.
Numerical Taxonomy Of Anaerobic Bacteria Isolated From Ground Water Of A Sanitary Landfill, Kenneth J. Curry
Numerical Taxonomy Of Anaerobic Bacteria Isolated From Ground Water Of A Sanitary Landfill, Kenneth J. Curry
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Section I: Facultative and obligatory anaerobic bacteria were isolated from the ground water of a sanitary landfill characterized by sandy soil and a periodically high water table. Isolates were examined for 63 characteristics and subject to numerical analysis. Eight clusters were established and correlations with conventional taxonomy were made. The Bacteriodaceae were found to be the dominant group of organisms by the methods employed. The anaerobic population was observed to decrease as the period of seasonal rainfall ended. At the same time, gram positive anaerobes were largely replaced with gram negative ones. Leaching between sampling sites (wells) made correlations between …
Cyclic Patterns Of Central Florida Sooty Mold, Bobby Ray Pohlad
Cyclic Patterns Of Central Florida Sooty Mold, Bobby Ray Pohlad
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to record seasonal variations in the epiphyllous sooty mold colonies found on citrus leaves in two central Florida citrus groves, to determine basic patterns of fungal growth throughout the year and to determine whether these general patterns are correlated with regional climatological data. The results indicated general seasonal variations in the reproductive units of five of the fungi from the colony. In the study, correlations were seen between the two Ascomycetes, Treubiomyces pulcherrimus and Trichomerium didymopanacis. They were found fruiting most abundantly during the winter and spring. Reproductive units of two asexual sooty mold species (Podoxyphium …
A Serological Survey Of Greater Orlando Human, Canine, And Feline Populations For The Presence Of Antibodies To Toxoplasma Gondii, John Louis Weihe
A Serological Survey Of Greater Orlando Human, Canine, And Feline Populations For The Presence Of Antibodies To Toxoplasma Gondii, John Louis Weihe
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Toxoplasma gondii, the etiological agent of toxoplasmosis, was first discovered in Ctenodactylus gondi, an small North African rodent, by Nicolle and Manceaux in 1908. Later the same year Splendore observed the organism in a laboratory rabbit. Human infection was first reported by Janku in 1923. Since its discovery, many investigations have shown the organism to be truly unique in the protozoan world. There appears to be only one species and only one serotype. Serologic and microscopic studies reveal Toxoplasma to have a vast host range. At least one representative of virtually every mammalian species tested harbored the parasite or showed …

Immunological Studies Of The Host Parasite Relationship Of Dirofilaria Immitis In Domestic Canines, Douglas Felton Qualls
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Canine immunoglobulins of the IgG group were shown to be intimately associated with the cuticle of circulating non-infection Dirofilaria immitis microfilaria. The significance of these immunoglobulins in blocking a complete immune response in the definitive host is discussed. Immunodiffusion, immunoelectrophoresis and fluorescent inhibition techniques are described and their applicability to the study of host-parasite relationships are evaluated. A rapid reproducible method for the production of specifically labeled anti-D. immitis microfilaria globulins is presented.

Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Fauna Of An Ozark And A Deltaic Stream, Mary R. Cather, George L. Harp
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
An Ozark and a deltaic stream in northeastern Arkansas were studied to compare physicochemical and aquatic macroinvertebrate parameters and to determine whether the number and kind of organisms increase downstream. Janes Creek, the Ozark-type stream, is clear, spring-fed and alkaline with a steep gradient and high flow velocity; dissolved oxygen values are not limiting. Big Creek, the deltaic stream, is turbid, low in alkalinity and has a slight gradient and low stream velocity. These streams comprise distinct habitats created by differences in substrate, watershed and land use. A total of 122 taxa were collected in both streams, 62 of which …

Castanea Pumila Var. Ozarkensis (Ashe) Tucker, Comb. Nov, Gary E. Tucker
Castanea Pumila Var. Ozarkensis (Ashe) Tucker, Comb. Nov, Gary E. Tucker
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Castanea ozarkensis Ashe, the Ozark chinquapin of the vascular plant family Fagaceae, is distributed widely throughout the Interior Highlands of Arkansas and the adjacent states of Missouri and Oklahoma. Examination of material from throughout the range of C. ozarkensis indicates demonstrable morphological intergradation with C. pumila (L.) Miller sensu lato, the chinquapin of wide distribution in much of the eastern United States. It is proposed that C. ozarkensis be reduced to C. pumila var. ozarkensis (Ashe) Tucker, comb. nov.
Comparison Of Laboratory Rhythms In Several Species And Genera Of Ants, Siu-Ming A. Soong
Comparison Of Laboratory Rhythms In Several Species And Genera Of Ants, Siu-Ming A. Soong
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Few simultaneous comparative studies of functional diversity have been made at the genus level. Four genera (Pogonomyrmex, Veromessor, Formica, Myrmecocystus) of ants were compared, two of them represented by two species each. Under controlled temperatures, in alternating light and dark, there was more difference in phase of rhythm among than within genera. This evidence adds to previous field evidence for a taxonomic explanation of such diversity in ants.
