Distribution And Effects Of Bacterial Endotoxin, Anne Carter Adams
Theses and Dissertations
In this study the distribution and effects of bacterial endotoxin were examined. Adult male BALB/c and adult male DUB/ICR mice were used in all experiments. Endotoxic activity of a number of strains from three genera of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Bacteroides, and Listeria, was detected using vincristine-treated mice as sensitized indicators for endotoxin and resistance to purified endotoxin induced by pretreatment with selected bacteria. Also, the effect of bacterial endotoxin and endotoxin-like substances on the course of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in mice, caused by Naegleria fowleri, was assessed.

Food Habits Of The Game Fishes Of Lake Anna, Virginia, Thomas Kenneth Rohrer
Theses and Dissertations
Beginning in May, 1973 and continuing through August, 1974 the food habits of several species of game fishes from Lake Anna, Virginia were investigated via gut content analysis. A variety of collecting methods were employed to secure specimens for examination and stomach contents were reported as percent frequency of occurrence. A total of one hundred and two collections were made yielding 287 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacépède); 166 chain pickerel, Esox; niger LeSueur; 53 bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque; 32 pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus); and 63 black crappie, Pomoxis nigromaculatus (LeSueur). It was found that M. salmoides and E. niger were …
Germination Ecology Of Three Chihuahuan Desert Crucifers, Larry L. Bell
Germination Ecology Of Three Chihuahuan Desert Crucifers, Larry L. Bell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Seeds of Lepidium lasiocarpum Nutt., Lepidium medium Greene var. medium, and Descurainea pinnata (Walt.) Britton ssp. ochroleuca (Woot.) Detling, native to the Chihuahuan Desert, were tested for their germination responses under conditions of constant and fluctuating temperatures, light and dark sensitivity, and different seed depths in soil. The effects of a three day drying period alternating with one day of moisture at field capacity was also investigated. All three species germinated optimally under fluctuating temperatures with low temperatures near 5-10°c and high temperatures near 20-25°C. L. lasiocarpum seeds responded better to fluctuating temperatures of 15°c magnitude than to fluctuations of …

Germination Of Prairie Forbs Liatris Aspera Michx. And Amorpha Canescens Pursh, Lewis Marshall Churbuck
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Seed of Liatris aspera and Amorpha canescens were hand collected from the Mark Sand Prairie in Eastern Iowa during the fall of 1973 and 1974. There was no significant difference in the viability between one and two year old seed with both species. There was no significant difference in the total germination at 21 C for L. aspera and A. canescens. A. canescens required a significantly longer period of time for the two year old seed to germinate. The most rapid, regular and complete germination of L. aspera occurred at 21 and 27 c. significantly reduced at 16 and 32 …

The films were photographed through a Wild dissecting scope and a Reichert Universal Camera …
Comparative Foraging Behavior Of The Olive Warbler And Its Possible Competitors, Robert J. Secatore
Comparative Foraging Behavior Of The Olive Warbler And Its Possible Competitors, Robert J. Secatore
Biology ETDs
The foraging activities of the Olive Warbler (Peucedramus taeniatus) and three other foliage-gleaning species were studied in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeastern Arizona during the summer of 1973. Grace's Warblers (Dendroica graciae), the most specialized of the four species, foraged most similarly to Peucedramus and is probably the latter is strongest potential competitor during the breeding season. The small size of D. graciae appeared to facilitate foraging in pine foliage and may be an important factor in promoting ecological segregation from the Olive Warbler. Audubon's Warblers (D. coronata) and Pygmy Nuthatches (Sitta pygmaea) were more generalized in their feeding activities …

Toxoplasma Antibodies In Wild And Domiciled Animals From Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, And The Philippines, Alan A. Marchiondo
Biology ETDs
Using the Sabin-Feldman Dye Test, sera from wild and domestic animals in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines were tested for the prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii. The incidence of Toxoplasma in all animals from these areas was: Arizona (19.6%, 11 of 56), Colorado (28.6%, 2 of 7), Montana (41.7%, 73 of 175), New Mexico (31.3%, 178 of 569), Peru (0%, 0 of 3), and the Philippines (33.8%, 48 of 142). The overall prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma was 32.7% (312 of 952).
Nine fecal samples from wild felines contained Toxoplasma like oocysts which were experimentally …
Role Of Melatonin In Hibernation And Isolated Heart Activity, Dennis L. Palmer
Role Of Melatonin In Hibernation And Isolated Heart Activity, Dennis L. Palmer
Biology ETDs
Melatonin functions in the control of melanophore pigmentation of amphibians but its role in higher vertebrates is ill-defined. In mammals melatonin is produced within the pineal gland, where its formation is light dependent. This study consisted of three experiments: (i) a biological assay of commercial preparations of melatonin; (ii) response of hibernating ground squirrels exposed to cold and melatonin; (iii) response of isolated hearts to melatonin. Commercial preparations of melatonin were compared for their biological effectiveness by measuring the inhibition of compensatory ovarian hypertrophy in laboratory mice. Unilateral ovariectomy results in hypertrophy of the intact ovary of untreated mice. Unilaterally …

Ozonation Of Secondary Effluent For Color Removal, Michael Patton
Ozonation Of Secondary Effluent For Color Removal, Michael Patton
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of various ozone concentrations when applied to secondary kraft effluent in regards to color removal. The influence of effluent temperature upon the color removal capabilities of ozone was also investigated to determine the optimal ozone reaction temperature or the temperature which would result in the greatest color reduction at a given ozone concentration.
The study was conducted by injecting ozone at three different concentrations of 20, 30 and 40 mg/liter into a temperature controlled column of secondary kraft effluent obtained from S.D. Warren Company in Muskegon, Michigan. The temperature was …

Treatment Of The Hyperventilation Syndrome, Hans Von Brauchitsch
Treatment Of The Hyperventilation Syndrome, Hans Von Brauchitsch
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A review oi the literature on the hyperventilation syndrome reveals a variety of treatment approaches and a virtual absence of controlled studies of this common problem. Attempts to treat the condition by changing the respiratory pattern through mechanical means can be traced back to the first century A.D. The "paper bag method" of treatment has many psychological drawbacks and is often unsuccessful. Several avenues of drug treatment have been explored: acidifiers, minor tranquilizers, antidepressants, and stimulants. Reports of success with insight-oriented intensive psychotherapy are scarce. Some forms of group psychotherapy have been tried with success. The model of the "medical …
A Study Of Naturally Occurring Algicides Produced By Freshwater Algae, Denny O. Harris, Harry D. Caldwell
A Study Of Naturally Occurring Algicides Produced By Freshwater Algae, Denny O. Harris, Harry D. Caldwell
KWRRI Research Reports
The mode of action of the algicide produced by Pandorina morum was examined by exposing Volvox globator and isolates spinach chloroplasts to a partially purified algicide preparation. Oxygen evolution of Volvox, whole chloroplasts and broken chloroplasts (minus the Calvin cycle),was reduced indicating that the algicide inhibits the light reactions of photosynthesis. Oxygen evolution studies of other Volvocaceae confirmed the observation that Pandorina morum is not significantly influenced by its own inhibitor. Molecular weight approximation by gel filtration established that the inhibitor has a low molecular weight (probably below 100 mw). Field studies indicate that this algicide has tremendous potential as …

The Α-Glycerophosphate Cycle In Drosophila Melanogaster Iv. Metabolic, Ultrastructural, And Adaptive Consequences Of Αgpdh-1 "Null" Mutations, Stephen J. O'Brien, Yoshio Shimada
Biology Faculty Articles
"Null" mutations previously isolated at the αGpdh-1 locus of Drosophila melanogaster, because of disruption of the energy-producing α-glycerophosphate cycle, severely restrict the flight ability and relative viability of affected individuals. Two "null" alleles, αGpdh-1BO-1-4, and αGpdh-1BO-1-5, when made hemizygous with a deficiency of the αGpdh-1 locus,Df(2L)GdhA, were rendered homozygous by recombination with and selective elimination of the Df(2L)GdhA chromosome. After over 25 generations, a homozygous αGpdh-1BO-1-4stock regained the ability to fly despite the continued absence of …
