Weaner Feeding Practices Need Review, W L. Mcgarry, R. J. Lightfoot
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Many fanners feed large amounts of grain to their weaners over summer and autumn, in the belief that this is necessary for high lifetime production.
The economics of this are open to doubt; in fact, the results of a recent experiment at Wongan Hills Research Station suggested that weaner feeding practices need review.
Minerals For Livestock : Shotgun Licks : A Waste Of Money, Laurence C. Snook
Minerals For Livestock : Shotgun Licks : A Waste Of Money, Laurence C. Snook
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Think carefully before buying proprietary "shotgun" licks, warns Animal Nutrition Officer Dr. L C. Snook in this article.
Many of these licks contain a variety of minerals not needed by stock in Western Australia, and misleading claims are sometimes made as to their value.
Dr. Snook concludes that only three minerals are needed in this State, and gives a recipe for a cheap all-purpose lick containing them.

Stinkwort : A Troublesome Summer Weed, G R W Meadly
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ONE of the commonest weeds in Western Australia is stinkwort, a vigorous plant which can be a nuisance in many parts of the State during late summer.

Fourth West Australian Random Sample Egg Laying Test : 1960-1961, P Smetana, F. A. E. Hunt
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
TO help improve the quality of laying stock for poultry farmers in Western Australia the Poultry Branch of the Department of Agriculture conducts annual random sample egg laying tests.
The tests reveal good and bad points in the laying strains available, and their results are a valuable guide to breeders.
Most of the chickens sold in Western Australia are now bred by hatcherymen who participate in the Random Sample Tests.

Rechauffe : Polite Name For Rehash, M L. Paul
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
ALTHOUGH every housewife tries to serve fresh foods, she often has food left over from the family meal.Rather than waste this food, she will reheat it for another meal.
This reheating of food is necessary to prevent waste, but freshly cooked foods are, of course, to be preferred from every angle for nutrition, flavour and appearance.
Yellow Dwarf Disease Of Cereals, H L. Harvey
Yellow Dwarf Disease Of Cereals, H L. Harvey
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
YELLOW dwarf, caused by the barley yellow dwarf virus (Oswald and Houston 1951) was recorded in this State for the first time last season.
There is reason to believe that this disease has been present for some years but in the past its symptoms have been confused with various environmental and nutritional disorders.

NOW is the time to consider some form of grazing management and supplementary feeding for early born calves, especially in the butterfat zone.
The calves are now two to three months old and beginning to forage for themselves, This can be a critical period in their development.
Stress Factors In Pig Raising, P C. Beck
Stress Factors In Pig Raising, P C. Beck
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE pig raiser who wishes to attain the best possible growth performance from his pigs must recognise factors other than the basic ones of good nutrition and bredin capacity.
These are "stress factors"—minor factors of husbandry which can greatly damage health and limit the growth rate.

rriHE nutritive value of pasture is high in early spring and remains so until early flowering.
After this the protein content falls rapidly, the fibre content rises and the plants become more lignifled and their digestibility reduced.

Parameters For Milk Yield And For Percents Of Ash, Dry Matter, Fat And Protein In Sows, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, D. A. Hartman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Milk was collected separately by machine from four to six glands on nine Yorkshire and Berkshire sows 2 or 3 days after farrowing and at weekly intervals throughout 6 weeks of lactation. Milk yield was measured following intramuscular injection of oxytocin, and the percent of ash, dry matter, fat and protein in the milk from each gland was determined. The average milk yield per gland, following a 1-hour period during which the pigs had been removed from the sow reached a peak of 74.6 gm. 3 weeks after farrowing. The ash content was 0.79% 2 or 3 days after farrowing, …

Fodder Shrubs In The Murchison, D G. Wilcox
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE Murchison pastoral country is usually thought of as either having a perennial grass cover, as in the Wandarrie, or as Mulga country with trees and short grass.
It is easy to overlook the small shrubs which occur all over the Murchison in every type of situation, and can provide high quality feed for sheep.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Feeding pastured calves protein supplements weekly instead of daily during the winter made little difference in either winter or summer gains, according to research results to date.
Two sources of protein were used in the trial. (I) Second cutting alfalfa hay was fed at the rate of four pounds per head daily. One group of calves was fed four pounds per head daily and one group was fed 28 pounds per head once each week. (2) Forty percent protein, pellets or cake, was fed at the rate of one pound per head daily. One group was fed one pound per …

HAIGHT, ROGER D. (University of Nebraska, Lincoln) AND RICHARD Y. MORITA. Interaction between the parameters of hydrostatic pressure and temperature on aspartase of Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 83:112-120. 1962.-The data obtained from studies of an aspartase preparation and aspartase in cells of Escherichia coli indicate that there is an interaction between the parameters of hydrostatic pressure and temperature. Pressure was found to decrease aspartase activity at 45 C and lower in vitro and below 53 C in vivo, thereby indicating that when the enzymesubstrate complex is formed there is an increase in molecular volume which is counteracted by pressure. Above …
