Conclusions
Farm animals in southeast Kazakhstan are widely infected with sarcosporidia: 96.9% of the sheep, 88% of the cattle, 70% of the camels, and 40% of the swine.
The muscles most often and most heavily infected are: in sheep, the heart, diaphragm, and median buttock muscle; in cattle, the heart and esophagus; in camels, the esophagus, diaphragm, and median buttock muscle; in swine, the heart, diaphragm, and median buttock.
The most objective data on infection of animals can be obtained by studying a minimum of 3 or 4 muscles of different muscular systems simultaneously.
Heavy infection of muscles by sarcosporidia, …
Studies On The Gonadal Pigments Of Cryptochiton Stelleri (Middendorff), Robert Eugene Senff
Studies On The Gonadal Pigments Of Cryptochiton Stelleri (Middendorff), Robert Eugene Senff
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The large gumboot chiton, Cryptochiton stelleri, (Middendorf, 1846) annually undergoes a reproductive cycle terminated by spawning in the spring. Cryptochiton stelleri is one of the marine invertebrates which possess carotenoid prognosis. Cryptochiton acquired its carotenoid moiety from the algae upon which it feeds. Following digestion carotenoids are transported to various sites in the body. The mechanisms and routes of this transport, as well as the eventual fate of the carotenoids in nutrition, are unknown. Perhaps storage in the animal occurs because of an inability to eliminate the carotenoids. On the other hand, the presence of carotenoids in the gonads would …

Food Dollars And Sense, Ruth B. Amidon
Food Dollars And Sense, Ruth B. Amidon
SDSU Extension Circulars
Having enough money to "eat as you please" is no assurance of an adequate diet. Dollars spent for food without a consideration of food and health needs of the family are dollars spent without "sense." The purpose here is not to propose spending less money for food but to discover how to get more value for the money spent. The "Basic Four Food Guide" has been devised to make choosing an adequate well balanced diet easy for anyone. The variety of foods with-in each group makes it possible to choose a well balanced diet to suit almost any taste or …

Evaluation Of Hydroxyprogesterone Acetate In The Prevention Of Canine Estrus, Kenneth B. Haas
Masters Theses
Foreword
Thirty years ago, endocrinology was a laboratory curiosity appreciated by few veterinarians. In those rare instances when the new science escaped from the laboratory and reached the clinic, the endocrine preparations used were extremely crude and often ineffective. In the growth of endocrinology as a science, availability of pure crystalline hormones has played an essential role, and to chemical synthesis must be credited the preparations which make specific endocrine therapy possible today.
In the last two decades endocrinology has come into its own in veterinary medicine, especially in regard to sex endocrinology. But only in the last ten years …

Determinants Of Occurrence And Distribution Of Fungi In Marine Environments, Paul W. Kirk
Determinants Of Occurrence And Distribution Of Fungi In Marine Environments, Paul W. Kirk
Master's Theses
Studies ware made of the effects of temperature and nutrient levels on salinity optima for growth and sporulation of Chaotomium Globosum and two marine Pyranomycetes, Torpedospora radiata, and Halosphaeriopais sp. Methods of culture and evaluation of sporulation were also investigated.
Discussion focused on ecological implications of data, in particular, on the probable survival value to a marine-fit fungus or a Phoma pattern mechanism-envolving vegetative and reproductive phases. As the seasons progress, the region where concentrations and proportions or salts are most favorable remains similar to that where vitamin requirements are least and biotic factors are most favorable.

A Study Of Diets Low In Phenylalanine And Tyrosine For Collagen Disease, Eva H. Crites
A Study Of Diets Low In Phenylalanine And Tyrosine For Collagen Disease, Eva H. Crites
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In 1957, Nishimura 74 made a startling proposition that linked collagen disease with hereditary metabolic defects. This defect was stated to be in the metabolism of tyrosine. Based on this report, a pilot study was conducted in which six rheumatoid arthritis patients and one scleroderma case were treated with a low phenylalanine and tyrosine diet.
The diets supplied approximately 1500 calories and 36 grams of protein. No more than 1500 mg. combined phenylalanine and tyrosine were given in any one day. Lofenalac was used as the principle source of protein.
During the six week test period laboratory studies were carried …
Effect Of Isocaloric Unsaturated Fats On Serum Cholesterol Of Patients Treated With Hypocholesterolemic Agents, Yvonne Marie Hatley
Effect Of Isocaloric Unsaturated Fats On Serum Cholesterol Of Patients Treated With Hypocholesterolemic Agents, Yvonne Marie Hatley
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The effect of a high unsaturated-low saturated fat diet on serum cholesterol levels were studied. Subjects were clinic patients receiving the following hypocholesterolmeic agents: triparanol (MER-29), diildothyroacetic acid (Diac), dextrothyroxine (d-T4) and 3-methoxy-16, alpha-methyl-1,3,5, (10)-estratriene-16 beta, 17 beta-diol (Manvene or Anvene).
Fifteen hypercholesterolemic patients, eleven of whom were diabetic, were placed on diets with prescribed amounts of unsaturated fat. The caloric distribution was 40 per cent carbohydrate, 20 per cent protein, and 40 per cent fat. The level of unsaturated fat was 70 per cent of the total fat.
Seventy-one per cent of the patients on the hypocholesterolemic …

A Comparative Study Of The Growth Of Polyoma Virus In Two Secondary Cell Lines: Mouse Lymphoma And Normal Mouse Fibroblasts, Rheeta M. Stecker
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In comparing the growth of polyoma virus in secondary cell cultures of a mouse lymphoma (P388D1, a known polyoma-supporting strain) and normal mouse fibroblasts (Earle’s L cells), the following observations have been made.
The L cell is capable of supporting the growth of the polyoma virus with reproduction and release of infectious particles. Viruses appear in the fluid from time to time over a period of several weeks. This probably represents a carrier state of the virus in L cells. Many of the L cells in infected cultures are not killed by the virus infection.
Virus particles released …
A Review Of Drug Addiction And A Study Of Its Relation To Carbohydrate Metabolism, Eppie Chung Hartsuiker
A Review Of Drug Addiction And A Study Of Its Relation To Carbohydrate Metabolism, Eppie Chung Hartsuiker
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The specter of addiction eventually involves everyone of the community. It is a three-fold problem of socio-economic, psychological, and physiological factors. The least understood is the physiological or biochemical aspect of addiction.
It has been postulated that an upset in carbohydrate metabolism may be a biochemical cause of addiction. Several avenues were employed to investigate this possible cause of addiction.
-
A diet survey was conducted and revealed a greater consumption of refined carbohydrates, confections and alcoholic beverages in addicts.
-
Five-hour oral glucose tolerance tests were performed on 7 addicts and 12 non-addicts. These tests revealed that there were decreased glucose …
Essential Amino Acid Composition Of A Balanced Chick Diet, Donald Christensen Dobson
Essential Amino Acid Composition Of A Balanced Chick Diet, Donald Christensen Dobson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The scientific balancing of diets has resulted in a series of studies to determine a standard for amino acid adequacy of a chick ration. These studies have shown that some amino acids are required in a chick diet more than others; they are termed "essential amino acids". Proteins used in formulating rations vary widely in essential amino acid content. Because of this variation, it can no longer be said that a diet with so much protein (N x 6.25) is adequate to meet the chick's need for optimum performance. Many papers have been published showing the results of experiments for …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Venison represents an important resource in this area. The average number of deer killed in Utah during hunting season of the ten-year period, 1940 to 1950, was over 50,000 animals annually according to the Utah State Fish and Game Department. For the period from 1950 to 1960 this figure has increased to over 100,000 animals. In terms of dressed weight, 100,000 animals would yield an estimated 8,000,000 pounds of meat. Neighboring states also produce large numbers of deer. This pictures venison not only as an important resource but as one rapidly increasing in importance.
Before the recent advent of locker …

The Hydrogen Peroxide Catalase Treatment Of Milk For Swiss Cheese Manufacture, Theodore Ricks Kowallis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Various temperatures and concentrations of the hydrogen peroxide catalase treatment of milk were studied in an attempt to discover the optimum temperature and concentration that would destroy unfavorable organisms and yet allow favorable ones to grow. The Federal Food and Drug Administration in their November, 1959, Definitions and Standards of Cheeses and Cheese Products states that "the amount of the hydrogen peroxide solution used shall be such that the weight of the hydrogen peroxide added thereby does not exceed 0.05 percent of the weight of the milk treated." Within the maximum level allowed, it was found that in day old …

Use Of Gamma Radiation, Chemicals, And Packaging Films To Control Post Harvest Diseases And To Extend Refrigerated Life Of Strawberries And Cherries, Gerald M. Cooper
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In recent years there has been a considerable amount of work done on developing chemicals that would inhibit mold growth when applied to fresh fruit, and at the same time, be acceptable to man when taken orally. This would save many thousands of tons of fresh produce that are lost each year by spoilage before it ever reaches the consumer. Along with the development of new chemicals to inhibit mold growth there is a substantial amount of research being done on developing a packaging film that will prevent recontamination of the produce, at the same time allowing the passage of …

Studies On Acceptability And Refrigerated-Life Of Certain Gamma-Irradiated Fresh Strawberries And Cherries, Norma Ward Pierson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
From the beginning of time, the history of man has been his struggle to obtain food. After many thousands of years, this is still a major problem which confronts the peoples of the earth. Although much food is available on earth, a great deal never benefits mankind because of deterioration and spoilage. Various kinds of spoilage cause a million tons of grain to be wasted each year. Man has learned to control and overcome some of these destructive forced through a variety of methods of food preservation. Some forms of preservation such as drying, salting, and so forth, probably have …
The Possible Competitive Position Of Utah Milk Concentrate On Selected Western Markets, Richard S. Magleby
The Possible Competitive Position Of Utah Milk Concentrate On Selected Western Markets, Richard S. Magleby
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the last two decades, Utah's market milk industry has changed from one of local processing and distribution by small-scale plants to one of state-wide distribution by large-scale dairies. At present, four large producer cooperatives control most of the state's market milk and six large processing plants accounts for more than 80 percent of the state's fluid milk sales.
Along with centralized processing and distribution has also come some centralization of production. Statistics recently published by Utah State University show that in 1957, 56 percent of the market milk produced in the state came from the five counties of Cache, …

Approximately 46 million acres or 88 per cent of the land area of the state of Utah has been classified by Reuss and Blanch (1951) as "range land open for grazing." Although some of this area cannot be grazed because of inaccessibility, lack of water, poison plants, and similar factors, it is estimated that some 40 million acres or 78 per cent of the total land area is available for grazing. Most of this grazing land is federally owned (73 per cent), while only 22 per cent is privately held, and 5 per cent is state owned.
Land Tenure Problems In Iran, Jalil Mahmoudi
Land Tenure Problems In Iran, Jalil Mahmoudi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Land tenure problems throughout the Middle East and most of the underdeveloped countries of the world are considered by competent international organizations and many students of world problems as one of the greatest contributing forces to social unrest and a barrier to economic development.
When the United Nations' General Assembly at its fifth session in 1950, had under discussion the problem of land reform in many underdeveloped countries, the consensus of opinions were that the conditions affecting land reform reduced agricultural productivity and were a major cause of low standards of living for the populations of those countries. The General …

The production of livestock in Utah is important to the economy of the state. The economic life of many communities throughout the state depends on income from livestock. Cash receipts from range livestock were $62.7 million or 38.8 percent of the total from agriculture in Utah in 1958 (18).
A Comparison Of The Salt Hardiness Of Barley, Petunia, And Tomato When Grown In Saline And Nonsaline Substrates, James Louis Wright
A Comparison Of The Salt Hardiness Of Barley, Petunia, And Tomato When Grown In Saline And Nonsaline Substrates, James Louis Wright
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The excessive accumulation of salt in the root zone of plants is a problem which is widespread in area, increasing in magnitude, and limiting in its effect upon productivity. Accumulation of salt in the rhizosphere has an effect upon moisture availability for plant use, the nutritional balance of the essential elements, and causes a reduction in plant growth with toxicity often resulting. When plants grow on substrates high in salt, the salt content of the plant also increases. This uptake of salt often results in changes in the morphology of the plant. Accumulation of salt within the plant cells interferes …

Embryo Sac Development Of An Intergeneric Hybrid Between Lycopersicon Esculentum Mill. And Solanum Lycopersicoides Dun., Ray William Bills
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the search for sources of resistance to the curly top virus disease of tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum), it was found by some investigators that certain species of the genus Solanum express an apparent immunity to the disease. It would be desirable to transfer the resistance expressed by the genus Solanum into the genus Lycopersicon. The major problem to the plant breeder becomes one of obtaining a compatible F1 hybrid between the Lycopersicon and Solanum genera through which genes controlling resistance may be transfered to Lycopersicon. In 1951, C. M. Rick reported a successful cross between …
