Building Resilience To Public Safety Power Shutoffs Through Public Education, Vikram Koundinya, Cristina Chiarella, Susan Kocher, Faith Kearns, Sabrina Drill

Journal of Extension

Public Safety Power Shutoff events are being implemented in California to reduce wildfire impacts. We surveyed California residents to identify their information needs and understand the potential role of University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) in power shutoff management. A majority of respondents need information on alternative power sources and community power systems. Most respondents indicated family, friends, and neighbors as the important group to manage power shutoff. UCCE was least used and preferred source for power shutoff information. Our findings reveal a need for Cooperative Extension to play an important role in power shutoff management and educating the public.

Maybe It's Us? An Organizational And Systems Level Approach To Reducing Barriers To Student Success., Ricky Urgo

First-Generation Symposium

The author will be presenting a deep dive on the project and subsequent publication "Systemic Solutions Driving Retention and Graduation Efforts at a Large, Selective Private Institution: A Scalable Project for Student Success" by Ricky Urgo and Sonja Ardoin. Through the lens of an organizational analysis, the author will provide tangible takeaways for practitioners and faculty to bring back to their campuses and replicate. This is an important and necessary venture, as institutions increase their attention and resources on the recruitment and retention of first generation and working class students. Institutions were not constructed with these populations in mind, but …

Architecting A More Gender-Inclusive Curriculum For Graduate Leadership Education, Galen J. Talis Feb 2025

Architecting A More Gender-Inclusive Curriculum For Graduate Leadership Education, Galen J. Talis

Libraries

Graduate leadership education is an important context for increasing gender-inclusivity. Incoming students are increasingly likely to support an all-gender approach; transgender and nonbinary graduate students report safety concerns on campus; and leadership scholars have identified serious discrimination against trans and nonbinary employees in the workplace as well as the need for greater gender-inclusivity in leadership education. Cis women and men are more widely recognized as gender-diverse, whether due to intersections with other identities or due to within-gender complexity. Yet researchers often fail to identify a gender theory when researching gender and leadership, most commonly assume a gender-binary frame, and do …
