The problem is the impact of social development on the under-enrollment of Black and Latino students in STEM programs. As noted by Max van Manen, the qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological approach utilizes the social development theory by Lev Vygotsky as the theoretical framework to comprise an unbiased explanation of the research. The central research question, “What are the lived experiences of the under-enrollment of Black and Latino students in STEM …

Examining Leadership Practices To Promote A Positive Culture Of Research Integrity In Higher Education Institutions, Seán Lacey, Jennifer J. Wilkinson

Publications

What is new?

While Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have, in recent years, placed greater emphasis on promoting good research practices, it is yet relatively unknown what leadership approaches are best suited to cultivating a positive culture of research integrity (RI) in HEIs. This small-scale exploratory descriptive study therefore sought to uncover initial findings from within the European context on practices research leaders found to be most effective in leading positive change in this space.

What was the approach?

The design was constructed using semi-structured interviews with five senior research leaders. Countries that were members of the European Network of Research …

Large language models such as ChatGPT provide efficient access to a wealth of information. However, there are significant questions regarding the depth and quality of knowledge in any one domain. This paper focuses specifically on the information systems (IS) field and assesses ChatGPT’s knowledge. To analyze the extent and quality of information systems knowledge derived from queries to ChatGPT, we used over 3,000 queries from a broad range of exam and quiz questions. These queries were obtained from university courses and professional information system certification exams. The query topics are based on a framework for information systems education, with queries …

Use Of Simulation In Dietetic Internships: A Qualitative Exploration Of Program Director Attitudes And Motivations, Theresa B. O'Reilly, Amy J. Nwora, Megan Whelan, Mary-Pat Maciolek

Journal of Dietetic Education

The use of simulation holds promise for the future of dietetics education for its use as an alternative for up to 30% of the 1,000 supervised practice hours for the training of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. Even more so, simulation is a teaching tool. When done well, simulation can challenge students in a safe environment where they can receive constructive feedback from expert guides and meaningfully reflect on their learning. The purpose of this study was to interview dietetic internship (DI) program directors on their attitudes and motivations on the use of simulation in their programs, targeting the heavily program-congested states …

Journal of Dietetic Education

Aim: To evaluate the impact of a conceptual diagram assessment task on dietetic student knowledge of and confidence applying the Nutrition Care Process. Methods: Situated within a pragmatic research paradigm, this mixed methods study applied a survey administered before and after a conceptual diagram assessment task using the Nutrition Care Process to explore changes in student knowledge, self-reported confidence, perceptions towards the Nutrition Care Process, and student experience. Nineteen students enrolled in a first-semester unit within a Master level dietetic course completed the assessment task, which visually presented a client case sourced from the student-run clinic within the Nutrition Care …

Collaborative Counseling: Using Course-Embedded Experiences To Train Skills And Foster Confidence, Jerry K. Hoepner, Erin D. Zigler-Miller Feb 2025

Collaborative Counseling: Using Course-Embedded Experiences To Train Skills And Foster Confidence, Jerry K. Hoepner, Erin D. Zigler-Miller

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Practicing speech-language pathologists and graduate students identify a need for counseling training but feel unprepared to implement counseling in everyday practice. Within speech-language pathology, there is a dearth of evidence about best teaching practices for counseling. The current investigation examines the collaborative counseling program, which involves hands-on training with authentic clients with communication disorders. Thirty-six students across two cohorts participated in this study. Students composed individual reflections after each collaborative counseling session. Each cohort also participated in oral debriefings after each session. Reflections and debriefing transcripts were analyzed qualitatively through open and axial coding via micro and macro analyses. Micro …

Addressing The Theory-Practice Gap Using Case-Based Learning And Imagined Roles In The Graduate Communication Disorders Classroom, Diane L. Laverty, Carol C. Thompson Feb 2025

Addressing The Theory-Practice Gap Using Case-Based Learning And Imagined Roles In The Graduate Communication Disorders Classroom, Diane L. Laverty, Carol C. Thompson

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Code of Ethics (2023) requires all practitioners to uphold the welfare of others without discrimination. Graduate programs in communication sciences and disorders, therefore, must guide future clinicians to apply theoretical knowledge to clinical practice equitably and inclusively. This grounded theory study investigated how an instructor in a graduate communication sciences and disorders (CSD) class used case-based learning (CBL) to fill the theory-practice gap and guide students to think equitably and inclusively for future complex cases. Audio recordings from 12 hours of instructor-student discourse during one semester were transcribed and analyzed verbatim. Three interrelated, interactional themes …
