All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …

The Electrolytic Separation Of Copper, Nickel And Precious Metals From Copper-Nickel Matte, Oden Cass Garst Jan 1941

The Electrolytic Separation Of Copper, Nickel And Precious Metals From Copper-Nickel Matte, Oden Cass Garst

Professional Degree Theses

"During the last few years considerable interest has been shown in domestic reserves of strategic metals. Broadly speaking, the strategic materials of any nation are those materials of commerce essential to the country both in time of war and peace, which are not produced within the boundaries of that country in sufficient quantities to supply even peace-time requirements. The United States is far more fortunate than other countries inasmuch as there are only eight metals which may be classified as being strategic metals; namely, aluminum, antimony, chromium, manganese, nickel, mercury, tin, and tungsten. The work on nickel covered herein was …

Coal Mine Safety Engineering, Charles F. Herbert Jan 1941

Coal Mine Safety Engineering, Charles F. Herbert

Professional Degree Theses

"The progress of coal mine safety may be compared to the development in mining through the years. When coal was first discovered centuries ago, it was taken from river or creek beds and from the outcroppings on the sides of hills. After removing the most accessible coal from the surface, it was necessary to mine the coal by quarrying or stripping the overburden from the coal seams. It is reasonable to assume that when such operations began, accidents of a serious nature also began to occur. Such accidents were no doubt due to rolling rocks or stones, falling material, and …

Some Causes For Porosity And Leakage In Non-Ferrous Castings, Alfred H. Hesse Jan 1941

Some Causes For Porosity And Leakage In Non-Ferrous Castings, Alfred H. Hesse

Professional Degree Theses

"Non-ferrous copper base alloys find many applications in industry. Among these alloys one finds the tin bronzes rather widely used for many purposes, and by delving still farther one finds pressure castings as one of their important applications. In many foundries the percentage of rejections due to leakage or porosity is quite high. This is obviously very costly since leakage is generally only found after machining. It is with a view to determine the causes for leakage in pressure castings and to devise methods for its prevention that the work described in this thesis was undertaken. It is not intended …

Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Tests On Light Beams Of Cold-Formed Steel, Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Jan 1941

Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering Tests On Light Beams Of Cold-Formed Steel, Cornell University School Of Civil Engineering

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT In the preceding 14th Progress Report a method was proposed to determine the forces acting in the welds in the web of I-beams composed of two channels. This method essentially has been based on the magnitude "e", the distance of the flexural center from the axis of the web. A formula for "e" was given which applies to symmetrical channels of uniform thickness. In the present report this expression for "e" will be simplified and a more general expression will be derived for "e" for symmetrical channels with web thickness differing from flange thickness. Furthermore, …

The Effect Of Glaze Fit Upon The Strength Of Missouri Zadock, Karl Emil Krill, Floyd Rolland Elliott Jan 1941

The Effect Of Glaze Fit Upon The Strength Of Missouri Zadock, Karl Emil Krill, Floyd Rolland Elliott

Bachelors Theses

"We know that, in the case of a beam, the really effective part of the cross-sectional area is that part farthest from the neutral axis. The I-beam, with most of the central area eliminated, is just as strong as is the rectangular beam of similar outside dimensions. Why should not the glaze on a piece of ceramic ware play as important a part in the strength of the piece as does the outermost area in a beam? Microscopic cracks in the flanges of an I-beam weaken it appreciably. Might not a parallel case exist in a piece of glazed pottery …

Characteristics Of Pyrometric Cone Equivalent Test Furnaces, Alfred W. Allen, Joseph T. Dusza Jan 1941

Characteristics Of Pyrometric Cone Equivalent Test Furnaces, Alfred W. Allen, Joseph T. Dusza

Bachelors Theses

"Though the method of determining the pyrometric cone equivalent of various silicate materials used in the refractories industry has been standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials (A.S.T.M. Designation: C24-35) as to the rate of heating, method of preparation of sample, mounting of test cones, and the interpretation of results, there still remains some variation in the results obtained by different operators using different types of P.C.E. furnaces. The three types of furnaces most generally used are: the Fulton-Coursen Granular Resistance Furnace, the Denver Fireclay Furnace developed by the American Refractories Institute using gas, and the General Refractories' Oxy-acetylene …

The Chemical Engineering Aspects Of The Saint Louis Smoke Problem, George Augustus Hale Jan 1941

The Chemical Engineering Aspects Of The Saint Louis Smoke Problem, George Augustus Hale

Professional Degree Theses

"During past years smokeless combustion of fuels has been conscientiously sought only in those larger industrial plants where fuel costs were a major factor. Smoke was considered a sign of prosperity in some moderate and even large size industrial practice, and no wholehearted effort was made to utilize the vast amount of energy lost through the smoke stack in the form of unoxidized carbon.

Inefficient combustion, which is so common today, is due in part to a wrong approach to the study of this problem. Industrial combustion, as a science, has, to a certain extent, been left to the mechanical …

The Scope Of Functions Delegated To The Engineering Department Of A Typical, Progressive Metal Mine, Alvin William Knoerr Jan 1941

The Scope Of Functions Delegated To The Engineering Department Of A Typical, Progressive Metal Mine, Alvin William Knoerr

Professional Degree Theses

"Nearly every conscientious engineering student will subject his college courses to an occasional critical analysis in an effort to assure himself that the studies he is pursuing will be a valuable aid to him in future practice. Possibly this skeptical attitude is accentuated by published letters of graduate mining engineers who decry the courses of mining schools in general and clamor for more practicability and higher specialization. Pure science as it is taught may at times seem to be very remote from any possible practical application. Mathematics may appear to be highly abstract. It seems quite logical that the degree …

Dewatering & Rehabilitating The Oronogo-Webb City Mining Area, Robert Knox Stroup Jan 1941

Dewatering & Rehabilitating The Oronogo-Webb City Mining Area, Robert Knox Stroup

Professional Degree Theses

"The object of this paper is to describe the dewatering of the Oronogo-Webb City mining area, and the subsequent mining operations which were carried on in the northern section of that area. It deals with the development in that district during the time the writer was familiar with operations there; i.e., from 1935 to 1939, inclusive, and no attempt is made to describe the open pit mining and local milling which have been carried out as a latter part of this same project. Also, no attempt is made to describe the surface drainage work which was planned and carried out …
