The correlation of non-fossiliferous drill samples is one of the difficult problems that is en­countered in sub-surface stratigraphy. In order to truly correlate a formation, it must have some dis tinctive features and have an areal persistence of these features. These requirements are probably met best by limestone.

The Red Lodge and Silver Star chromite deposits of Montana have stimulated much interest during periods of war. The Red Lodge deposit is 25 miles southwest of Red Lodge which is also the nearest railroad point. Several workings are scattered throughout the area, exposing lense-like ore bodies averaging 33% chrome oxide. Silver Star is a much smaller deposit 5 miles west of Silver Star, Montana, which is its nearest rail­road point. Lenses of chromite are exposed by pits and trench­es, which average approximately 36% chromic oxide.

It is known that there are large deposits of chromium ore in Stillwater and Carbon Counties in South-Central Montana. The late James F. Kemp of Columbia University, stated in 1928, that these were the largest chromium deposits in the United States and probably in the world, although they were not considered of commercial grade as compared with foreign ores.

"The discovery of deeper production and higher pressures has resulted in the need for control equipment for preserving and protecting these great reservoirs of energy; and, in the case of high pressure condensate wells, has resulted in the need for means for preventing freezing or hydrate solidification caused by throttling the production. Development of a successful removable subsurface regulator has enabled operators to reduce dangerously high surface flowing pressures to safe workable limits; and, by moving the point of principal pressure reduction from the surface to warmer subsurface levels, has resulted in complete elimination of freezing conditions in flow lines. …

SCOPE OF THIS REPORT all the beams heretofore tested in this program were furnished with web stiffeners in order to aviod crushing of the web at the load points and at the supports. In practical application the use of such stiffeners at points of concentrated loads would not only be uneconomical but also would impair the versatility of the elements, since stiffeners would have to be spaced on each individual beam according to the particular location and loading. "The principal source of raw material for the production of high-alumina refractories are the diaspore clays of Missouri. These highly refractory clays contain a large percentage of the mineral, diaspore, a monohydrate of alumina whose theoretical chemical formula is Al₂O₃ʺH₂O. The clays as mined contain from 85 to 65 per cent alumina...Diaspore clays as now found fill sandstone-lined "sink holes" or depressions in the parts of the district underlain by rocks of the Pennsylvanian Age. I. SCOPE OF THIS REPORT In the 12th Report, Section III, a method was proposed for the determination of the required strength of collateral attachments. In addition, a test procedure was suggested to test the validity of the theoretical considerations on which this determination was based. In the present report two more formulae are developed which will serve for the experimental verification of this approach. Preparations for these tests are now under way.

A conspicuous two hundred and fifty foot sandstone of central Montana, known as the Eagle Formation, constitutes part of the some five thousand feet of Cretaceous sediments in the state. It stands out in steep cliffs which stretch for many miles in the outcrop area from Wyoming to Canada.
