This water is distributed to consumers through 1,170 miles of water pipe and 147,912 service taps. Included in this distribution system are 14,334 fire hydrants and 16,884 valves. Every pipe joint, every fire hydrant, every valve and every plumbing fixture is a potential source of leakage, and it has become necessary to develop …

Die Steels And The Heat-Treatment Of Dies For Use In Die Casting Aluminum Base Alloys, Elmer Gammeter Jan 1932

Die Steels And The Heat-Treatment Of Dies For Use In Die Casting Aluminum Base Alloys, Elmer Gammeter

Professional Degree Theses

"Although the casting of metals is an ancient art, it was not until recent years that metals were cast in large quantities in metallic molds. The increasing demands on the industry for greater production brought about this change which essentially involves the introduction of molds capable of producing numerous castings in preference to the use of non-metallic molds which were destroyed in making the casting"--General Consideration of the Die Casting Process, page 1.

Investigation Of Continuous Beams With Varying Moment Of Inertia By The Method Of Conjugate Points, Russell Arthur Bryant Jan 1932

Investigation Of Continuous Beams With Varying Moment Of Inertia By The Method Of Conjugate Points, Russell Arthur Bryant

Professional Degree Theses

"This design represents the application to a practical example of a rapid and direct graphic solution of the relation expressed by the Theorem of Three Moments. This method for obtaining moments in continuous beams eliminates the necessity of using arbitrary coefficients and gives the engineer an opportunity to exercise his ingeniuty [sic] and judgment toward obtaining efficiency and economy. The use of prescribed coefficients for continuous beams makes the design mechanical and unscientific and results in moments which may be 50% too small or 60% too large"--Introduction, leaf 1.

The Public Health Engineer's Part On A Health Program, Walter Eric Casey Jan 1932

The Public Health Engineer's Part On A Health Program, Walter Eric Casey

Professional Degree Theses

"In this work the Public Health Engineer should not be confused with the Sanitary Engineer as the term is commonly used today. The Sanitary Engineer is primarily a designer or builder. He is, in fact, a civil and hydraulic engineer specializing in a rather restricted field, confined for the most part to works relating to municipal water supply and sewage. The Public Health Engineer on the other hand is primarily a student and worker in the field of public health. The range of his activities is wider, and his training and knowledge are of essentially different character. It is not …

Preparation And Use Of Maps For Highway Purposes, Homer A. Hollingshead Jan 1932

Preparation And Use Of Maps For Highway Purposes, Homer A. Hollingshead

Professional Degree Theses

"The Illinois highway system consists of about 10,000 miles of primary (state) roads, and 20,000 miles of secondary (county) roads.

The preparation of plans for a primary and secondary highway system of such size is an obvious step prior to construction and maintenance.

In order to coordinate administration, location, surveys, right of way, construction, maintenance, traffic, legal and political activity, maps of various scales and types are required.

This treatise will consider the types and classes of maps used by the state of Illinois for the purposes mentioned"--Part I.

The Purification Of Missouri Fire Clays, James Joseph Offutt Jan 1932

The Purification Of Missouri Fire Clays, James Joseph Offutt

Bachelors Theses

"At the present time there appears to be an unlimited supply of high grade fire clay available for most any purpose. But some time in the future there will rise the problem of purifying the low grade clay to such an extent that it will be used in high grade fire clay products. Whatever purification method may be employed it must be applicable on a commercial scale and the cost of purification must be very low. Until the present time little if any work along this line has been reported. Apparently no one has ever attempted any serious efforts to …

Development Of An Artificial Substitute For Firestone, Joseph Edwin Stevens Jan 1932

Development Of An Artificial Substitute For Firestone, Joseph Edwin Stevens

Bachelors Theses

"Firestone is a natural occurring silica rock which is cut up into brick and shapes and used for lining cupolas. This rock is found in the east, mostly in Pennsylvania. It is dense, having a porosity of 5.6% raw and 16% after firing to cone 18. Its volume expansion upon firing was calculated to be 19.2%. Its appearance shows that it is evidently fine grained silica bonded with a small amount of clay and siliceous cement. This rock has such desirable characteristics for use in cupola linings that it would be of great importance to duplicate this rock synthetically in …

Concentration Of An Oxidized Lead Ore From Southeast Missouri, Robert Edward Evans Jan 1932

Concentration Of An Oxidized Lead Ore From Southeast Missouri, Robert Edward Evans

Masters Theses

"In the main ore bodies of the Southeast Missouri Lead Belt the lead occurs as galena disseminated in dolomite. The concentration in the mills is by tabling and flotation. The grade of the concentrates and the recovery of the galena are excellent. However, in certain areas of some of the mines ore has been developed that does not concentrate so readily. Because of its reddish brown color this ore is known locally as "red ore", and the presence of oxidized lead has been suspected. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent to which oxidized lead minerals were …

A Study Of Some Methods Of Concentrating Uranium And Radium In Carnotite Ore, H. L. Gibbs Jan 1932

A Study Of Some Methods Of Concentrating Uranium And Radium In Carnotite Ore, H. L. Gibbs

Masters Theses

"Carnotite ore is a source of radium and it is the recovery of this element which is chiefly sought in its treatment. The radium results from the radioactive disintegration of uranium which is one of the constituents of the yellow mineral carnotite. The ores are largely low grade. Higher grade pockets occur scattered in the deposits and because of their irregular occurrence are not easily located. The larger low grade deposits which are more easily accessible contain considerable quantities of calcium carbonate and oxide minerals. These cause a high consumption of the acid used in the chemical treatment of the …

The Control Of Anode Corrosion, Edward Arthur Godat Jan 1932

The Control Of Anode Corrosion, Edward Arthur Godat

Masters Theses

"This particular study of the control of anode corrosion in connection with the production of zinc by electrolytic deposition from commercial solutions is a continuation of work started at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1929. It is not a new problem or even a new phase of the problem, but rather an attempt to confirm some of the ideas brought out in previous work and to perhaps more definitely establish some of the conclusions drawn from insufficient data, by more extensive tests and by attacking the problem from a slightly different angle"--Introduction, page 1.

Preliminary Construction Of A Photo-Electric Cell Concentrator, Stanley S. Williams Jun 1931

Preliminary Construction Of A Photo-Electric Cell Concentrator, Stanley S. Williams

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The separation of the valuable portion from the waste portion of an ore is an individual problem for every ore. However, the various methods for accomplishing this end, more or less classify themselves by the physical properties of the constituents of the ore. Most of the properties of minerals have been utilized in some way or other to affect the separation of the valuable from the invaluable parts. Practically nothing has been done so far with color and luster to attain this purpose.

It is believed that the photo—electric cell could also be used in concentrating a certain class of …

A Study Of The Plating Prohibitive Properties Of Various Separators, Bruno J. Pozorski May 1931

A Study Of The Plating Prohibitive Properties Of Various Separators, Bruno J. Pozorski

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of this thesis is to study the plating prohibitive properties of the various materials commonly used in the manufacturing of separators, and to indicate which material would be most serviceable and feasible in a separator. At one time positives and negatives were kept not more than 0.25 inches apart, with the idea of reducing the intervening layers of electrolyte, and, therefore, the internal resistance of the cell, as much as possible. It was, however, found that the output could actually be increased by putting the plates at greater distances, the fact being that the larger bulk of solution …

Age Relationships Of Ore Deposits Of Southwestern Montana (A Microscopic Study), Charles R. Trueworthy Jan 1931

Age Relationships Of Ore Deposits Of Southwestern Montana (A Microscopic Study), Charles R. Trueworthy

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Although considerable work has been undertaken by some prominent geologists, the best known of which is that of Paul Billingsley and J. A. Grimes', in investigating the ore deposits of the Boulder Batholith and surrounding area, there has not been any complete microscopic investigation of these deposits, as a whole, published in the literature. With this in mind it was suggested to the writer by Professor Paul A. Schafer, of the Montana School of Mines, that a microscopic study of the ores of this region would be a worthwhile geologic problem.

It was thought that the mineral association and the …
