"The need for a technique for making torsion balance surveys of inundated areas was brought to the writer's attention during the years of 1927 to 1933, while employed by The Sinclair Exploration Company to prospect for oil in Austria, Hungary and North and Northwest Germany. At that time, the company was using ten torsion balances, supplementing the work with magnetometer surveys and refraction seismograph detail. During part of this period an elementary and relatively insensitive gravimeter was used. Some reflection seismograph work was also done during the last year of operations. "The greatest use of feldspar is as a flux in the Ceramic Industry where it is used in the manufacture of abrasives, floor tile, terra cotta, china, and earthenware of all types. It is also used in the manufacture of glass and enamels, and much is used as grinding medium in powdered form because it is softer than the common abrasive, quartz...Missouri Granites are composed of feldspar, quartz, mica, and other materials, which may or may not occur in all the samples. Recent demands for petroleum to carry on the war effort have resulted in widespread prospecting in the northern Great Plains. Nearly all oil wells now drilled are of a depth to penetrate the marine Jurassic formations. It is known that these strata differ in thickness from place to place, but information of distribution, thickness, and lithology has not yet been compiled.

"This report was the result of an assigment [sic] to make a geologic reconnaissance of the headwaters of Coldwater River in northwest Mississippi, on which a site for a flood control dam had been made. At the time of the last field work in November, 1940, the boring program for borrow areas and for foundation had been completed.

The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to find some means of increasing the effective porosity and permeability of the producing sands of the Cut Bank Oil Field, with the hope that thereby the ultimate recovery of petroleum from this field may be increased. Although the percentage increase in production thus effected would undoubtedly be small, it would represent a substantial volume of petroleum in view of the great quantity of oil and gas present in this field.

The problem to be considered embraces the mineralogy and the mode of formation of a very pure and vein-like deposit of crystalline graphite. In studying the Cut Bank field and its numerous wells, it is found that dry holes are surrounded by producing wells, and also that the field as a whole is very irregular; water, oil, and gas zones in many cases following no definite pattern. In some instances, this phenomenon may be due to the lensing and thinning of the producing sands, but it is evident that this is not the only factor. Therefore, the controlling factors must be porosity and permeability.

Coal was first mined in Montana in the year 1880. For the last thirty years the mining of coal in this state has been very important-with few people realizing its value. In the mineral industry, the value of the annual production of coal is exceeded by none of the non-metallics, and only by gold, silver, and copper in the metallics. At the present time the coal production of Montana is valued at about 41000,000.00 annually.

Various electrolytes were experimented with in an attempt to deposit an iron-manganese alloy. An Alloy was obtained from a solution containing ferrous ammonium sulfate, manganous sulfate, and ammonium sulfate. Further experimentation was done in an effort to determine the optimum conditions of deposition and the highest manganese alloy which could be produced.

"Symmetrical Trinitrotoluene is stable in the presence of moisture, but the nonsymmetrical trinitrotoluenes permit replacement of a nitro group with the formation of a nitrated cresol and nitrous acid. Nitrated cresols form salts similar to the picrates. To avoid these nonsymmetrical trinitrotoluenes the Ordinance Department, U. S. A., requires that Grade I trinitrotoluene have a solidification point of at least 80.2⁰C.². Numerous methods for purifying the crude trinitrotoluene and others for separating the nitrotoluenes have been suggested"--Introduction, page 1.

This thesis is a report on three investigations, Citrus waste Disposal, Distillery Slop Disposal, and Dehydration of Beet by Infra-red Radiation. The work on citrus waste consisted or the production of a resin tram citrus waste and phthall1c anhydride. The optimum molding conditions tor this cellulosic resin were established, and the effect of var1ation in the percentage of citrus waste to phthalic anhydride was determined.
