"It is known that the addition of titanium to certain types of brasses and bronzes gives them additional valuable properties. The copper-titanium master alloy which is the natural addition agent for making these brasses can not, however, be used if it has been made aluminothermically. It appears that aluminum in the master alloy makes it useless for the above purpose. It should, therefore, be worth while to determine if it is possible to produce a copper-titanium alloy by some method which eliminates the contamination by aluminum, and which would give a copper-titanium which could be used with advantage as an …

"In 1898 F. Heusler discovered that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin are ferromagnetic. Since that time, ferromagnetic alloys have been reported to occur in the ternary systems copper-manganese-aluminum, copper-manganese-arsenic, copper-manganese-boron, copper-manganese-antimony, copper-manganese-zinc, silver-manganese-aluminum, and silver-manganese-tin. Such ferromagnetic alloys containing only non-ferromagnetic elements have come to be called "Heusler alloys."

From the metallographic standpoint, the ferromagnetic copper-manganese-aluminum and copper-manganese-tin alloys have been the most fully investigated of the Heusler alloys. These alloys owe their ferromagnetism to the beta phases in their respective systems. The structure of the beta phase is based on a body-centered cubic lattice.

In the past, large amounts of placer gold were recovered from the gulches of the area, however, because of the transporta­tion facilities, only the upper portions of a few lodes were exploited by the early miners.

In some local­ities the sandstone is dry, and its identification in cut­tings from deep wells has in many cases proved difficult.

This thesis is a report on coatings exclusive of the porcelain enamels which may be used at temperatures as high as 750*F., and also a description of the properties of the more heat resistant resins of commerce. The method of preparation and testing of the various coatings investigated in this research is given, and the results are tabulated and discussed. Best results were obtained with Dow Corning silicones of the 800 series heavily pigmented with either zinc dust or aluminum bronze, and with glycerol phthalate -- silicone coatings pigmented with aluminum bronze.

The region is on the Pacific Ocean side of the Rocky Mountains. Three major rivers, the Clark Fork, the Flathead, and the Kootenai drain this area into the Columbia River.

An analysis of the literature shows the close analogy between liquid crystalline phases in solution (fluids separating from main portion of solution and having some of the directional properties of crystals) and unipolar coacervates (solvated micelles of like charge separating as a distinct colloidal phase). A theory is here advanced that liquid crystalline phases in solution are the direct result of a maximum in osmotic pressure which is predictable from the first approximate equation of the Debye-Huckel theory in the same manner as unipolar coacervates were predicted by I. An ethylcellulose lacquer system for both decorative and protective purposes was developed for use on polystyrene plastics. It was found that a one-coat lacquer containing only alcohol solvents produced the most satisfactory finish. Formulations were based on experimental work, conducted to determine the effect of the various lacquer components on the plastic. The results of a study of formulations on a two-coat system are presented.

I. IMPROVED TECHNIQUES FOR WASHING IRON BLUE SUSPENSIONS

The investigation of several procedures for the speeding of the washing of iron blue suspensions to remove electrolytes is reported. The use of several techniques to coagulate blue particles in the colloidal range to cause more rapid settling was found to be of little value. A conventional Oliver filter and centrifugal clarifier were found to be unsatisfactory for clearing iron blue suspensions. Considerable advantage in washing by settling and decantation was obtained with the settling of the blue suspensions in relatively shallow vessels. Until the late 1930's, the accepted practice for the construction of drainage installation included the use of a large, approximately No. 2 size, aggregate as porous backfill. However, a lage number of drains ceased to function as result of clogging or "silting"*, and many highway departments practically eliminated sub-surface and intercepting drainage.

The following report summarizes some of the more important studies that have dealt with "filter" (backfill material) to be used in drainage construction. The scope of it is limited, dealing primarily with the questions of proper gradation.

"The Bureau of Mines in conjunction with their Electrolytic Manganese Alloys program has developed a series of age hardening copper-manganese-nickel alloys having properties which compare favorably with those of copper-beryllium alloys...An unusual and highly desirable characteristic of these alloys is their insensitiveness to rate of cooling from the solution temperature. Air cooled and water quenched samples will have identical time hardness curves on being aged. Instead of requiring closely controlled conditions characteristic of many age hardening alloys, these alloys cannot be subjected to a thermal mechanical handling which will prevent hardening on their being subsequently heated to the aging temperature. …
