The problem considered in this report is one of the mineralogy and mode of formation of the extremely pure, large bodies of vermiculite. Mineralogically the ultrabasic intrusive, with which the economic mineral is associated, presents an array of rather unusual minerals. The determination of these minerals, their associations, and the sequence of alteration that lead to the formation of the vermiculite bodies, constitutes the problem.

"The discovery of deeper production and higher pressures has resulted in the need for control equipment for preserving and protecting these great reservoirs of energy; and, in the case of high pressure condensate wells, has resulted in the need for means for preventing freezing or hydrate solidification caused by throttling the production. Development of a successful removable subsurface regulator has enabled operators to reduce dangerously high surface flowing pressures to safe workable limits; and, by moving the point of principal pressure reduction from the surface to warmer subsurface levels, has resulted in complete elimination of freezing conditions in flow lines. …

A conspicuous two hundred and fifty foot sandstone of central Montana, known as the Eagle Formation, constitutes part of the some five thousand feet of Cretaceous sediments in the state. It stands out in steep cliffs which stretch for many miles in the outcrop area from Wyoming to Canada.

Chromite occurs in Madison County, Montana, in two areas, one three miles southwest of Silver Star, the other five miles southeast of Sheridan. The ore bodies are small, lenticular masses surrounded by metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of the pre-Cambrian Cherry Creek series. The ore was deposited from the hydrothermal solutions which serpentinized the surrounding metamorphic host rocks.

The subject of the thesis was based upon the theory of precipitation or age hardening of the copper by the compound formed by the Manganese and silicon present in the ternary Cu-Mn-Si alloy. "The United States Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Rolla has recently been conducting an intensive investigation of the amenability of Arkansas red ores to enrichment by standard ore dressing methods. These Arkansas ores are low grade with the estimated reserves running into several million tons. All of the metals have definite melting points. When a metal is heated above the melting point, it exists as a liquid. Now if the melt is allowed to cool, it will solidify when a temperature corresponding to the melting point is reached.

However, if one metal is added to another metal, both of which are mutually soluble in the liquid state, a certain effect can be noted. The melt will not solid­ify when the melting point of the pure metal is reached, but will freeze at a lower temperature.

This revival of interest has been mainly due to the development of the process for electro-deposition of manganese by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Prior to the work of the bureau of Mines there was no commercial source of high purity manganese. Manganese made by the electrolytic process contains less than .03% impurities, while manganese made by other methods contains as high as 3% impurities.
