Foraminifera From The Colorado Shale Of North-Central Montana, Higbee G. Williams, David P. Wilson May 1949

Foraminifera From The Colorado Shale Of North-Central Montana, Higbee G. Williams, David P. Wilson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The use of foraminifera in the determination of geologic age, and in the correlation of strata, is one of the most important techniques in oil field stratigraphic studies. The petroleum industry in many regions relies on these microscopic life forms to determine the positions of oil-bearing horizons and to determine the tops of beds. In northern Montana the Colorado group of strata, a series of about 2,000 feet of dense, dark similar shales, is known to contain foraminifers.

A Guide To Be Used In Evaluating Audio-Visual Aids For Use In The Teaching Of Industrial Arts In The Junior High Schools Of Utah, Dan H. Swenson May 1949

A Guide To Be Used In Evaluating Audio-Visual Aids For Use In The Teaching Of Industrial Arts In The Junior High Schools Of Utah, Dan H. Swenson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

To find the beginning of the use of audio-visual aids in the teaching of industrial arts is difficult, if not impossible. The very nature of the work makes the use of audio-visual teaching methods absolutely indispensable. Long before the term "audio-visual aids" had been coined and before any attention had been given to the teaching method, as such, teachers of industrial arts were making use of the demonstration, the model, the exhibit, and many other teaching devices since included in the scope of the meaning of audio-visual teaching aids.

It would be hard indeed to imagine how a teacher could …

Research Investigation Of Seepage Control For Dams And Levees, Robert Raymond Brookshire

Professional Degree Theses

"The problems of a century old levee system have provided excellent research for the Corp of Engineers and others in the design and construction of earth dams for flood control, navigation and multi-purpose projects. A special problem on which valuable knowledge has been gained is that of seepage control. The experiences obtained in recent years have been supplemented by theoretical developments in the field of soil mechanics, but it is believed that considerable information will be gained on seepage control from further investigation and experience.

The safety factor to prevent failure from seepage is believed to be the most critical …

Geologic Considerations In Relation To A Materials Survey, James L. Young Jr., L. E. Gregg Jan 1949

Geologic Considerations In Relation To A Materials Survey, James L. Young Jr., L. E. Gregg

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In materials surveying, geology should be of maximum benefit, not as a complete informant but as a foundation for reconnaissance, assembly, and cataloging of materials. Geology in essence is a materials survey on a grand scale. Use of this science for engineering purposes involves some primary knowledge of geologic nomenclature, the basic historic approach of geologists, and the use of resources and data published by state, federal, and private agencies over a period of 75 years.

Recognition of the need for information on surface conditions as an aid to engineering and allied sciences is emphasized; and in response to this …

Design Of A Wind Tunnel For The Missouri School Of Mines And Metallurgy, William E. Speece Jan 1949

Design Of A Wind Tunnel For The Missouri School Of Mines And Metallurgy, William E. Speece

Masters Theses

"For some time there has been a need for a wind tunnel at the School of Mines for experimental work in the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Departments. With the expanding program and the possibility of establishing an Aeronautical Engineering School here, the need will be even more pronounced. So the problem will be of definite practical value. It was the original idea to design a small tunnel, build the tunnel, and to run a series of smoke tests on various structural models. However, after discussing the possibility of such a problem with school authorities, it was decided that if a …

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Gases Through Porous Media, Ralph Davis Jan 1949

The Application Of The Relaxation Method To The Solution Of Problems Involving The Flow Of Gases Through Porous Media, Ralph Davis

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the feasibility of applying the relaxation method of mathematical analysis to the solution of problems involving the flow of gases through porous media. The relaxation method was first applied to two-dimensional problems by Christopherson and Southwell, who applied it to problems in stress analysis. It was later applied to steady-state heat conduction problems by H. W. Emmons and to steady-state flow of incompressible liquids by A. A. Zwierschowski. The solutions of problems involving the flow of gases through porous media is difficult for all but the simplest boundary conditions, and impractical for …

"This thesis was undertaken to ascertain the feasibility of incorporating the United States Geological Survey methods of surveying and computing into a course of study in the Civil Engineering curriculum. It has been the author's opinion that a course of study could be tendered, as a definite project, which incorporates fundamental surveying and advanced surveying. The author's planned course of study was a method of third order transit traverse survey streamlining the method used by the United States Geological Survey. The time element and weather were the essential factors in the planning. In the advanced surveying course there are eighteen …

A Study Of Cathode Drift Compensation In D-C Amplifiers, Joseph W. Rittenhouse Jan 1949

A Study Of Cathode Drift Compensation In D-C Amplifiers, Joseph W. Rittenhouse

Masters Theses

"The expression, cathode drift, has to do with the random variations in vacuum tube plate current which are attributable to similar variations in emission velocities of electrons leaving hot cathodes. The fact that these random current changes appear to result from spurious drifts in cathode potential, since all other electrode potentials are unrelated to them, give rise to the expression, cathode drift...The problem with which this paper is concerned is a study of some of the possibilities of compensating for cathode drift effects in a single amplifier stage. Specifically, this paper will: (A) present a detailed mathematical and graphical analysis …

Effect Of Transition Elements On The Transmittance Of B₂O₃ Glasses, Chandubhai Gordhanbhai Amin Jan 1949

Effect Of Transition Elements On The Transmittance Of B₂O₃ Glasses, Chandubhai Gordhanbhai Amin

Masters Theses

"For many years, boric oxide has been used extensively as a minor constituents in silicate glasses, because of its beneficial influence on their physical properties as well as on glass melting processes; but when used without silica or in too large proportion, the resulting glasses lack chemical durability...Because of its detrimental effect as a major constituent in silicate glasses or in borate glasses, very little work has been done on borate glasses, especially on colored borate glasses...The purpose of this investigation is to find out the effect of the transition elements on the transmission curves of the colored borate glasses"--Introduction, …

Concentration Of Manganese Dioxide From Philipsburg, Montana, W. M. Mcauliffe

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Imports of manganese ore probably supply a major proportion of the needs of the United States. Domestic production is reported to be higher than pre-war levels, but does not equal that of the peak production year of 1943. In 1946, the Anaconda Copper Mining Company accounted for 90 percent of the total shipments of manganese nodules, and this company is the largest producer of domestic metallurgical ore in the United States.

A Study Of The Diffusion Of Electroplated Coatings In The Solid State., Michael R. Writt May 1948

A Study Of The Diffusion Of Electroplated Coatings In The Solid State., Michael R. Writt

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The term diffusion means an equalization or homogenization of diverse materials. Specifically applied to metals, diffusion is the interchange of atoms. It is, in effect, an invasion of one crystal lattice by the atoms of one or more other crystal lattices. Therefore, the study of diffusion must involve the geometry and physics of crystal lattices as well as their energies.

Cold-Applied Mastic-Type Crack And Joint Filler Compound, L. E. Gregg May 1948

Cold-Applied Mastic-Type Crack And Joint Filler Compound, L. E. Gregg

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

For the past year the Research Laboratory has been investigating joint filling compounds for concrete pavements with the object of determining whether extenders of one type or another placed in the hot-poured rubber-asphalt filler could reduce the cost without reducing the efficiency of these materials. Also included in the investigation was a search for new or different materials that might serve the same purpose but have properties that would make them more desirable or less expensive than the rubber-asphalt fillers. Because of the inconvenience and danger involved in the heating process to 450°F, and also the difficulty of controlling the …

A Study Of Land Drainage By Pumping From An Experimental Drainage Well In The Delta Area, Utah, Ellaf Arni Olafson May 1948

A Study Of Land Drainage By Pumping From An Experimental Drainage Well In The Delta Area, Utah, Ellaf Arni Olafson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although it is now generally accepted that, in the west, irrigation and drainage are necessarily complementary practices, the realization has been slow in developing. Recent estimates indicate that about 8 million acres of land under irrigation in the 17 western states require drainage. For most irrigated lands a depth to groundwater of at least five to ten feet is desirable. Very high capital as well as annual maintenance costs would be involved in meeting this minimum requirement with the usual types of tile and open drains. Indeed, in most instances it cannot economically be accomplished. The purpose of this study …

Standardization Of No-Passing Zone Pavement Markings, Glen Nickolas Hackmann

Professional Degree Theses

"This thesis is a comprehensive treatment of present methods practiced by the various Highway Departments in the United States. It presents in particular current methods used by the State Highway Departments and the Public Roads Administration in marking no-passing zones throughout the country. For a long time it has seemed to the author that such a study was needed by both students and highway engineers. Road-design information of great value has developed over the years and often has been published but never assembled in a single orderly presentation stripped of excessive overlapping"--Preface, page ii.
