"An experiment was conducted in an attempt to establish a relation between sea coal activity in a facing sand and the particle size of the sea coal added to the sand. It was felt that if a sufficient difference in distribution of volatiles was detected, a correlation between particle size and activity of the sea coal within the test specimens might be established. One of the problems still unsolved is the nature of the mechanism of the anodic dissolution of metals like beryllium, zinc, magnesium, cadmium, tin, aluminum, iron in aqueous salt solutions. It has been reported in the literature that these metals show discrepancies which often arise between coulometric data and the weight loss of metal electrodes in various media. "This thesis presents an analysis of the flow characteristics through a water pressure regulator. Characteristic curves of the relationship between pressure drop through the regulator and flow through the regulator are developed. To further analyze these relationships, a least squares computer analysis was used to develop equations to fit these curves. An investigation into the modes of dissipating pressure energy in this type of regulator tends to indicate that a significant portion of the energy is lost through viscous shearing action in the area of high turbulence. "The problem undertaken in this study is to present a performance evaluation of Linvill's model as it pertains to the p-n junction photo-diode. The evaluation is performed by comparing the distributed mathematical solutions, the solution obtained using Linvill's lumped model, and the experimental measurement of the transient voltage rise across a photo-diode due to a unit-step pulse of light incident on the junction. Despite the absence of a suitable light source for use in the experimental measurement, it is concluded that Linvill's model provides an excellent means to determine the risetime of a photo-diode. "Silver and platinum, although not used extensively in industry, find considerable use in specialized work. Silver, because of its much lower cost, is used to a greater extent than platinum. Since silver has a high position in the electromotive series, it is very resistant to chemical attack. It is unaffected by alkaline conditions even at high temperatures and hence silver is used in ladles and molds for producing pure sodium and potassium hydroxides. This and its excellent electrical conductivity makes it a very useful material in circuitry.

"Resistivity measurements were made on ordered and disordered Fe₃Al samples while irradiated by neutrons.

In the ordered as well as the disorder state, the different Fe₃Al samples were heated to 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300°C respectively, and were irradiated by a fast neutron flux of 0.534 x 10¹⁰ neutrons/cm²-sec. The ordered Fe₃Al measurements were characterized by an increase in resistivity denoting an advancement toward disorder. The writer sought an improved approach for teaching theory of electronics to high school students. This approach was intended to require less expense and time needed to provide classroom instruction on electrical theory.

The purpose of this study were to:

(1) Prepare a number of demonstrations to illustrate phenomena associated with coils or inductors and their use in practical electronics.

(2) Prepare equipment and gather parts needed to perform demonstrations. Ease of construction and economy were important considerations.

(3) Evaluate the effectiveness of the demonstrations on student comprehension and the ability to apply information taught.

"The preferential orientations produced in binary alloys of U-Si and U-Cr on plane sections perpendicular to the direction of heat flow by cooling from beta-phase temperatures were determined. The experimentally determined textures were presented using inverse pole figures. A definite and reproducible relationship was found to exist between the preferred orientation present at any position and the cooling rate which material at the position had experienced. It was found that the concentration of the alloying elements within the ranges studied had little detectable effect upon the observed relationship between the cooling rate and the resulting preferential orientation. "A new approach to the problem of flywheel design has been developed, thus eliminating some of the problems of conventional design. The term flywheel design, in this thesis, refers to the determination of the flywheel inertia (mass moment of inertia) only. Two versatile computer programs were set up to obtain the flywheel inertia and the turning moment diagram for a large variety of internal combustion engines, and use was made of these programs to optimize the inertia of the flywheel with respect to speed. Kentucky rock asphalt (a medium-grained quartz sandstone impregnated with natural bitumen) occurs as major deposits in Edmonson, Grayson, Hardin, Breckinridge, Logan and Warren Counties. Physiographically these deposits occur along the southeastern margin of the Western Coal Field. Geologically the Caseyville formation (particularly the Bee Spring member) of the Pottsville series of the Pennsylvania strata and the Hardinsburg and Cypress sandstones of the Middle Chester series of the Mississippian strata are of interest. The areal geology of Kentucky is shown in Figure 1 and the locations of rock asphalt deposits are depicted in Figure 2.

Seventeen initial bituminous treatment projects were advertised for bids during 1963, which permitted bituminous concrete Class I Surface (hot-mix) as an alternate to Class C-1 Surface (road-mix). The hot-mix surface course was to contain a minimum of 6 percent PAC-9. Eleven of the contracts, totaling 38.841 miles in length, were awarded as hot-mix; and the remaining six contracts, totaling 18.12 miles in length, were awarded as road-mix.
