"The purpose of this research was to study, by means of x-ray and metallographic analysis, a material reported to be zirconium cyanonitride.

The x-ray analysis had a three fold purpose, the determination of the symmetry of the constituents, the number of phases present, and the crystal structure type. Metallography was used to confirm some of the results obtained by x-ray analysis establishing certain definite phase relationships present in the microstructure.

The work described in this thesis was undertaken with the view of exploring a reaction sequence suggested by early French investigators to synthesize 2-amino-4-chlorophenol-6-sulfonic acid especially in reference to the German claim that a low yield of product would result following this preparation, In particular, a successful application of this procedure would afford a relatively direct and inexpensive route to the sulfonic acid which is used as an azo dyestuff intermediate and could possibly find application in medicinal chemistry.

Measurements of reflectivity of opaque ore minerals can be made with the common photographic light meter and a standard reflecting microscope, both of which are available to most Geology laboratories. During the course of the investigation, approximately 30 minerals were examined, of which 10 were duplicates. Comparable results, for the most part within 3% of previously determined valued, were obtained.

The oldest system in which identifiable invertebrate fossils have been found is the Cambrian. The basal Cambrian formation found in Montana is the Flathead sandstone and quartzite of Middle Cambrian age. No fossils have been reported from this formation. Above the Flathead is the Wolsey formation composed of green fissile shale with sandy and limy members. This fossiliferous member of the Middle Cambrian is known in Northwestern Montana as Gordon, and in the Philipsburg quadrangle as the Silver Hill formation.

Studies of riding qualities as determined by irregularities in high type bituminous pavements were first treated in Report No. 1 on this subject in December, 1949. At that time interest was centered as much on specifications as on the causes, the thought being that specifications did not provide satisfactory tolerances to produce surfaces with good riding qualities.
