"Refractory castables or concretes, a comparatively new member of the refractories family, are an admixture of highly aluminous cements and graded refractory aggregates, blended in predetermined proportions very much like structural concrete. The refractory aggregates must contain a large amount of fines contrary to the requirements of ordinary concrete. Unlike the Portland cements, which are mainly combinations of calcium silicates, the highly aluminous cements are predominantly calcium aluminates. They are comparatively of a refractory natures, having the hydraulic setting property combined also with high early strength. A correlation is presented from which the number of theoretical plates for a given separation by distillation can be estimated as a function of the reflux ratio. The effects of relative volatility and feed composition upon such a correlation are also studied. Smoker's (1) equation was used in calculating the data. The results were obtained by varying the several parameters which have to be given for any separa tion desired. These include feed compositions of 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75; relative volatilities of 1.1, 1.2, 1.5, and 2.0; and various reflux ratios. The overhead product and bottoms product compositions were kept …

The geographical extent of the deposits was confined to the western United States. Many of these deposits are of the disseminated porphyry type. This report which presents results from additional study of the Sandstone Test Road located on S.R. 30 in Magoffin and Breathitt Counties, is a supplement to Report No. 1 dated April, 1952. The project consisted of a laboratory investigation and construction of a 20-mile test road, with all the original work carried out over a period from early 1950 to November 1951.

Recently the Class I, Type C Surface Mix has been the subject of numerous discussions resulting from present paving operations on Muldraugh Hill (U.S. 31W and U.S. 60) south of Louisville, and from performance of pavements placed heretofore on some Louisville Streets. Apparently, past difficulties have created some doubt about the suitability of Type C surfaces in heavy traffic areas for which it was intended. Type C does not represent the ultimate in stable mixtures, but it should be entirely adequate for the purpose intended.

During the summer of 1949, approximately one year after installation, serious corrosion failures were discovered in a series of galvanized metal entrance culverts on U.S. 60 south of Ashland near Princess. Because of a unique disparity in their performance at this location, the problem was referred to the Research Division for possible explanation. An impromptu investigation ensued, and the cause of the failure was attributed directly to acid drainage water flowing from extensive strip-mining operations within the immediate area. A report (1)* describing the attendant conditions was made to the Research Committee in December of that year.

In 1926, John T. Lynch read to the Kentucky Academy of Sciences a paper entitled, "The Relation Between Drainage Area and Waterway Required for Culverts and Small Bridges in Kentucky." The paper was based on a study of many small drainage structures then existing in the highway system, and a general evaluation of the performance of the structures in relation to rainfall and runoff from contributing watersheds.
