Twenty-four alloys, at 5 weight per cent or smaller intervals, were investigated by the thermal method. Very low temperatures had to be attained, because most of the alloy melts supercooled remarkably. Analysis showed only a liquidus and solidus line, and the solidus temperature was the same for each alloy.

Unique feldspar porphyries, syenitic in appearance, and granitic in composition, form an unusually thick sill intruding pre-Cambrian Belt graywacke about eight miles south of Whitehall in southwestern Montana. Commercial deposits of gold and silver ores occur nearby, and may possibly be genetically related to the porphyry, although direct association is not evident. The geologic age is believed to be late Cretaceous or early Tertiary, and the sill may be related to the Tobacco Root batholith.

This investigation was undertaken primarily as a problem in geologic mapping. The stratigraphy was studied as to the character, age, and sequence of the geologic formations that are exposed. The conclusions were based principally on the field relationships and lithology because no fossils were found.

Examination of a rock suite from the northern end of the Boulder batholith reveals that four of the eight criteria for assimilation as given by Grout are present. Thus, in the opinion of the writer, there is evidence and trends to signify assimilation, but no indication of the importance that it played in the formation of the Boulder batholith.

"The use of a rod mill for producing manufactured sand is not a recent application. A Marcy Open End Rod Mill has been operating at the plant of the Sun Sand Company, Thayer, West Virginia, since 1925. In early 1940 an 8' x 12' rod mill of the open end type was installed at Shasta. Dam, near Redding, California for sand production. In 1942 work began on Fontana Dam, a Tennessee Valley Authority Project on the Little Tennessee River. "Evidence of the steady increase in the production of quarries is a reflection of the improved blasting practices that are being used. New explosives, the new millisecond electrical blasting caps and the endless experimentation carried on by both manufacturer and operator continue to aid or better the old methods of quarry blasting. "The mining industry has long been criticised severely because of its high rate of accident occurrence. Statistics, which, however, are not strictly comparable show that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. Figures such as these are by no means comforting to mining men. They constitute a challenge to the industry that cannot be ignored.

"The extensive investigations in the past have conclusively established that the alkali ions are responsible for the electrical conductivity of glass in both the brittle and viscous states; however, with the exception of one investigation in the brittle state, little consideration has been given to determination of the mobility of the alkali ion in such glassy systems. A review of the literature pertaining to the electrical conductivity of glass is presented.

The purpose of this investigetion was to study the durability characteristics of a river gravel, used as coarse aggregate for concrete, with respect to four major fractions separated in accordance to their general mineralogical classification. This aggregate was from the same stock of Ohio River gravel that was used in earlier phases of this Project reported in 1947.

During the summer of 1940 the Kentucky Department of Highways, with the Public Roads Administration participating, constructed 6.27 miles of investigational pavement as a cooperative research project on joint spacing. This project was one of six planned by the Public Roads Administration and the Portland Cement Association in cooperation with six highway departments. The five other states participating were California, Michigan, Hinnesota, Missouri, and Oregon. The project selected for this jointing study in Kentucky is in Daviess County, approximately six miles southeast of Owensboro, on Kentucky Route No. 71 (Layout map in Figure 1).

The following chapters are devoted to the various phases of that branch of construction which is followed from the offshore side of the waterfront. This branch, in the parlance of the building trades, is known as dockbuilding. Years ago all waterfront structures in New York Harbor were constructed almost entirely of timber and experience taught that the most economical approach for building docks and wharves was made by utilizing floating piledrivers and derricks. A study of the mass transfer phenomena in fractional distillation was made. Small scale single slot, single cap apparatus was used to obtain the necessary experimental data.
The mass transfer coefficient KgA was calculated using several combinations of liquid and vapor compositions in the menthanol - water system under static liquid conditions. The correlation showed that KgA held about constant over the entire range of concentrations.
The problem of bubble area was studied and reasonable estimations of area, bubble frequency, and time of rise were made. This information is to be incorporated into the calculation of the mass transfer coefficient …
