On Farm Irrigation - The Shift From Art To Science, Charles M. Burt
On Farm Irrigation - The Shift From Art To Science, Charles M. Burt
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Excellent on-farm irrigation management and design have traditionally been promoted for reasons of improved yields and farm input costs. More recently, external pressures require even more detail to on-farm irrigation. These external pressures include competition for water by urban and environmental interests, plus degradation of aquifers and rivers. As irrigation progresses from an art to a science, new concepts must be adopted. Key points made in the paper relate to flexible water deliveries to farms, improved fertigation practices, the importance of on-farm irrigation evaluations, the use of an Irrigation Consumer Bill of Rights by dealers and farmers, and irrigation system …

Standards And Verification Protocols For Commissioning Air Flows In Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, James Cummings
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Commissioning involves three major elements - 1) process, 2) standards, and 3) protocols to verify compliance with the standards. Process is the step-by-step oversight of and involvement in the design, build, and start-up of the facility, to make sure that the design matches the customer's needs, that the design is consistent with good building science practice, that construction matches the construction documents, and that systems and system interactions are properly tested at start-up. This paper does not address process, rather it focuses on the second and third elements -- standards and compliance protocols. It presents standards related to airtightness, air …

Building Lms Adaptive Filters With Register-Based Fpgas, Li Ding
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, an 8-bit least mean squares (LMS) adaptive digital filter with 16 coefficients is implemented on a single FPGA, using the MaxPlus+2 design environment. The system is constructed as a hierarchical structure, using four different levels of design hierarchy. Subdesigns at each level of the hierarchy project are complied, fitted and simulated to test and verify their functional correctness. The complete system is tested and verified by checking the MaxPlus+2 simulator results against fixed-point integer arithmetic simulations written in Matlab. The resulting adaptive filter is subsequently mapped to the Alters FLEX I OK20TC144-3 device, resulting in a 14,500 …
Thin-Layer Prestressed Composite Ferroelectric Driver And Sensor Characterization With Application To Separation Flow Control, Karla M. Mossi
Thin-Layer Prestressed Composite Ferroelectric Driver And Sensor Characterization With Application To Separation Flow Control, Karla M. Mossi
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Experiments were conducted in two different stages--general piezoelectric actuator characterization and flow separation control applications. The characterization of the piezoelectric devices was performed in several stages, due to the many variables that affect performance. The first stage of the characterization consisted of tests conducted on 13 different THUNDERTM (thin-layer composite unimorph ferroelectric driver and sensor) configurations. These configurations consisted of a combination of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 layers of 25μ thick aluminum as backing material, with and without a top layer of 25μ aluminum. All of these configurations used the same piezoelectric ceramic wafer (PZT-5A) with dimensions …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
An apparatus and method for sensing tooth contact includes at least one, and more typically plural, vibration sensors which are coupled to the non-biting surfaces of teeth. These sensors produce output signals when the associated teeth contact one another during jaw closing, the output signals being processed to provide information concerning tooth contact. For example, information concerning the ?rst tooth which contacts may be determined, the sequence of contact by various teeth may be determined, as well as the time between contact of the various teeth. Other information concerning tooth contact may also be determined and dis played in a …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper presents the results of a series of experiments conducted on a PC wall-piles barrier. That barrier was built alongside a road passing through some sensitive sites, to assess its effectiveness in isolating vibration caused by running trains and dropping a weight. Then the effectiveness of PC wall-piles for controlling ground vibrations is discussed. Field measurements were performed for 5 cases having different types of PC wall-piles. The simultaneous measurement of vibration was performed at several selected points on the ground. Finally, a method for estimation of vibration reduction by PC wall-piles was developed, being based on wave penetration …

The Environmental Remediation Of Clark Island − A Former Alliedsignal Inc. Site, Romeo Ciubotariu, Charles E. Schneeberger, Marie-Claude Wilson, William J. Hague
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Clark Island is a 63 ha island located in Lake St-Francis, part of the St-Lawrence River, Québec, Canada. Since the early 40s the island has been used for the production of mineral acids by its fanner owner, Allied Chemicals Limited. Acidic wastes were placed over large portions of the island. The presence of these waste materials together with contaminated soils was identified as a potential threat to the nearby river water quality as well as to the underlying bedrock groundwater quality. A major remedial investigation and feasibility study was initiated in 1987. The approved scope of the remediation project included …

Measurement And Analysis Of Civil Engineering Vibrations, Jean-Lou Chameau, Glenn J. Rix, Laurel Empie
Measurement And Analysis Of Civil Engineering Vibrations, Jean-Lou Chameau, Glenn J. Rix, Laurel Empie
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Man-made vibrations caused by construction activities, blasting, rail and vehicular traffic, and machinery can have an adverse impact on buildings and facilities, human occupants of buildings, and sensitive equipment housed within these facilities. Comparisons between vibrations are often difficult because of different methods used to measure, analyze, and interpret vibration data. To facilitate these comparisons, standard methods of selecting and mounting transducers, processing vibration data, and interpreting test results are reviewed. Specific measurement and analysis techniques and maximum allowable vibration criteria used for evaluating the influence of vibrations on humans, the potential for cosmetic damage to structures, and the impact …
From The Past To The Future Of Landfill Engineering Through Case Histories, R. Kerry Rowe
From The Past To The Future Of Landfill Engineering Through Case Histories, R. Kerry Rowe
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The advances in landfill engineering are outlined based on a number of case histories illustrating past problems, hydraulic performance of clay liners, diffusive transport through liners, hydraulic containment and clogging of leachate collection systems. The importance of conventional geotechnical considerations (e.g. stability) will also be highlighted with reference to a number of cases. Finally, the recent advances in landfill operations are illustrated with respect to a modern landfill. It is concluded that, provided all key failure mechanisms are considered in the design, construction and operation of the facility, modern landfills should provide environmental protection both today and well into the …

Alcanena is a municipality located in the center of Portugal where about 85% of the Portuguese tanning industries are located, representing 65% of the national production. During decades the industrial waste was disposed directly in the soil and the waste waters discharged into the river without any treatment. Following the recent Portuguese environmental policy, the national authorities decided to rehabilitate this area. First, by the construction of a waste water treatment plant (WWTP) and a impermeabilized lagoon for WWTP mud deposition, then by the construction of a landfill for deposition of the tanning scraps and, finally, when the maximum capacity …

The complete assignment of the proton chemical shifts obtained by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of de-O-acetylated glucuronoxylomannans (GXMs) from Cryptococcus neoformanspermitted the high-resolution determination of the total structure of any GXM. Six structural motifs based on an α-(1→3)-mannotriose substituted with variable quantities of 2-O-β- and 4-O-β-xylopyranosyl and 2-O-β-glucopyranosyluronic acid were identified. The chemical shifts of only the anomeric protons of the mannosyl residues served as structure reporter groups (SRG) for the identification and quantitation of the six triads present in any GXM. The assigned protons for the mannosyl residues resonated at clearly …
