Melt Hydroperoxidation Polypropylene With Potential Application In Pollution Control, Zeena Cherian Jan 1998

Melt Hydroperoxidation Polypropylene With Potential Application In Pollution Control, Zeena Cherian

Theses

The primary objective of this study is to introduce tertiary hydroperoxide functional groups into polypropylene (PP) melt by injecting air. This was done first by mixing additive free polypropylene powder with air in a batch mixer. The influence of air flow rate, temperature, mixing time and rotor RPM on the concentration of hydroperoxide groups were studied. Iodometric analysis and fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis were the techniques used to detect and quantify the concentration of hydroperoxide groups. In the second phase of the study, hydroperoxide groups were introduced in polypropylene through reactive processing in a single screw extruder. It was …

Removal Of Vocs From Superfactant-Flushed Wastewater By Membrane Based Modified Pervaporation Process, Anirban Das Jan 1998

Removal Of Vocs From Superfactant-Flushed Wastewater By Membrane Based Modified Pervaporation Process, Anirban Das

Theses

An aqueous solution of a volatile organic compound (VOC) e.g. trichloroethylene (TCE) is passed through the bores of hydrophobic microporous polypropylene hollow fibers having a plasma polymerized silicone coating on the fiber outside diameter; a vacuum is maintained on the shell side of the fiber to remove the VOC and recover it by condensation. Process performance has been obtained over a range of feed flow rates, concentrations of VOC and the surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)). In solutions without surfactant or low surfactant concentrations, the pores are not wetted and remain gas-filled. The VOC is stripped from the solution into …

Voc Removal From Nitrogen By A Membrane-Based Combined Absorption-Stripping Process, Boya Xia Jan 1998

Voc Removal From Nitrogen By A Membrane-Based Combined Absorption-Stripping Process, Boya Xia

Theses

A regenerative membrane-based absorption process has been extensively studied to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from air/N2 using silicone oil as absorbent. The absorbent liquid is regenerated by applying vacuum in a membrane-based stripper. In this process, there are no flooding, loading and entrainment, which limit the gas/liquid flow rate in the traditional absorption process. In the present study, attention has been focused on the removal of volatile component(s) from binary gas mixtures such as methanol-N2, and toluene-N2, and from a model multicomponent mixture of gasoline vapor constituents and nitrogen. The process performance was tested …

Driving Simulators: Are They Valid Test Environments For Its Development?, Robert A. Glaser

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

Driving simulators are increasingly being used to test the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that interface_ with the driver in the vehicle. Examples of such technologies include autonomous, on-board-sensors (Huguenin, 1993) which potentially can prevent many of the rear-end crashes that lead to fatalities or serious injuries (Knipling, Mironer, Hendricks, Tijerin, Everson, Allen and Wilson, 1993). A study of the simulator image-factors which affect the detection of rear-end-collisions and, more generally, of motion is described below. The study was undertaken on the University of Massachusetts driving simulator located at the Amherst campus.

The ability of single doses of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) to induce oxidative stress in hepatic and some extrahepatic tissues of animals is well documented. However, no previous study has examined the ability of TCDD to induce oxidative stress and tissue damage in brain in vivo. In this study the ability of TCDD to induce oxidative stress in brain tissues of mice was studied after subchronic exposures. Groups of female B6C3F1 mice were treated orally with TCDD (0, 0.45, 1.5, 15, and 150 ng/kg/day) for 13 weeks, 5 days/week. The animals were euthanized 3 days after the last treatment and brain tissues …

Building Cavities Used As Ducts: Air Leakage Characteristics And Impacts In Light Commercial Buildings, Florida Solar Energy Center, James Cummings

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Field testing in 70 small commercial buildings in central Florida identified that building cavities were used as part of the air distribution system in 33 buildings. The various building cavity types (# of buildings in parentheses) are: enclosed air handler support platforms (10), mechanical closets (8), mechanical rooms (6), ceiling spaces (7), wall cavities (6), chases (1), and "other" building cavities (2). Testing found that these building cavities are considerably more leaky than standard ducts and plenums because they are generally not built to the same airtightness standard as ducts. Actual air leakage is a function not only of duct …

The presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a wastewater treatment system can significantly affect the uptake of heavy metals by sludge particulates. The characteristics of DOM, its concentration, and the solution pH are important parameters governing the heavy metals uptake reaction. The characteristics of DOM of various wastewater and sludge (primary, secondary, and tertiary) samples collected from four municipal wastewater treatment plants were investigated. Results showed that the dissolution of DOM from sludge is significantly affected by pH and suspended solids concentration. Results also showed that DOM contains two discrete acid groups that are available for metals complexation. The …

Effects Of Temperature, Water Hardness, And Recirculation On Copper Corrosion, Brian R. Weiss Jan 1998

Effects Of Temperature, Water Hardness, And Recirculation On Copper Corrosion, Brian R. Weiss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In previous work, the effects of water quality have been shown to influence the formation of scale from copper corrosion. A general understanding of the effects of water quality on copper corrosion have been difficult to obtain because of complex interactions of water quality variables on copper corrosion in different water supply systems. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of temperature and water hardness on copper corrosion occurring in a household water supply system. The effects of recirculation were also studied in concurrence with the above water quality parameters. Electrochemical corrosion testing and corrosion by -product …

Imaging Electrical Current Density Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, B. Murat Eyüpoğlu, Ravinder Reddy, John S. Leigh Jan 1998

Imaging Electrical Current Density Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, B. Murat Eyüpoğlu, Ravinder Reddy, John S. Leigh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, images of nonuniform and uniform electric current density in conductor phantoms, which contain magnetic resonance active nuclei, are produced using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). A standard spin echo pulse sequence is used, with the addition of a bipolar current pulse. The flux density parallel to the main magnetic field, generated by the current pulse, is encoded in the phase of the complex MR image. The spatial distribution of magnetic flux density is extracted from the phase image. Current density is calculated using the magnetic flux density. This fairly recent technique is known as Magnetic Resonance Current Density …

Well Characteristics Influencing Microscopic Particulate Analysis Risk Index, Robert Christopher Sharek Jan 1998

Well Characteristics Influencing Microscopic Particulate Analysis Risk Index, Robert Christopher Sharek

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Cryptosporidium parvum is a common surface water contaminant that can cause illness in human beings. The presence of this etiological agent in groundwater identifies the groundwater as under the direct influence (GWUDI) of surface water. Currently the determination of GWUDI water sources requires an expensive, labor-intensive laboratory procedure called the Microscopic Particulate Analysis (MPA). The results of the MPA provide a risk index that rates the degree of surface water contamination. The objective of this study is to identify other methods of identifying GWUDI of surface waters, such as well characteristics and hydrogeologic factors which may contribute to higher MPA …
