Response Of Runoff Diazinon Concentration To Formulation And Post-Application Irrigation, Joshua R. Evans, Dwayne R. Edwards, Stephen R. Workman, R. Michael Williams

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Pesticides used in urban environments can be transported in runoff to downstream waters and cause adverse environmental consequences. This experiment assessed the effects of post-application irrigation depth (0, 6.4, and 12.7 mm) and formulation (liquid and granular) on concentration and transport of diazinon (a pesticide commonly used for lawn insect control) in runoff from “tall” fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) plots. The post-application irrigation was applied using rainfall simulators immediately following diazinon application. The rainfall simulators were again used approximately 2 h after diazinon application to apply the equivalent of a heavy rainfall (64 mm/h for approximately 1.5 h) to generate …

Photographic Studies Of Laser-Induced Bubble Formation In Absorbing Liquids And On Submerged Targets: Implications For Drug Delivery With Microsecond Laser Pulses, Hanqun Shangguan, Lee W. Casperson, Dennis L. Paisley, Scott A. Prahl Aug 1998

Photographic Studies Of Laser-Induced Bubble Formation In Absorbing Liquids And On Submerged Targets: Implications For Drug Delivery With Microsecond Laser Pulses, Hanqun Shangguan, Lee W. Casperson, Dennis L. Paisley, Scott A. Prahl

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Pulsed laser ablation of blood clots in a fluid-filled blood vessel is accompanied by an explosive evaporation process. The resulting vapor bubble rapidly expands and collapses to disrupt the thrombus (blood clot). The hydrodynamic pressures following the bubble expansion and collapse can also be used as a driving force to deliver clot-dissolving agents into thrombus for enhancement of laser thrombolysis. Thus, the laser-induced bubble formation plays an important role in the thrombus removal process. We investigate the effects of boundary configurations and materials on bubble formation with time-resolved flash photography and high-speed photography. Potential applications in drug delivery using microsecond …

Kolmogorov Complexity Justifies Software Engineering Heuristics, Ann Q. Gates, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre Jul 1998

Kolmogorov Complexity Justifies Software Engineering Heuristics, Ann Q. Gates, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The "clean bill of health" produced by such a technique does not guarantee that the program is actually correct. In this paper, we show that several heuristic techniques for software testing that have been developed in software engineering can be rigorously justified. In this justification, we use Kolmogorov complexity to formalize the terms "simple" and "random" that these techniques use. The successful formalization of simple heuristics is a good indication that Kolmogorov complexity may be useful in formalizing more complicated heuristics as well.

Chemical Kinetics And Heat Transfer In Polyurethane Foam And Resin Composites, Yumi Morisaki Jul 1998

Chemical Kinetics And Heat Transfer In Polyurethane Foam And Resin Composites, Yumi Morisaki

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

A development of the composite materials parts require knowledge of the theoretical model that describes the physics, the chemical kinetics, and the heat-transfer properties of the materials.

For this work, the chemical kinetics of the polyurethane foam and the fiberglass-reinforced resin is investigated individually. An adiabatic method, which is commonly used by many investigators, is used for the polyurethane foam, while an isothermal degree and the rate of cure relationship is applied for the resin. A heat transfer effect during the curing process of both polyurethane foam and the resin is also investigated. A common approximate method for the heat-conduction …

Needs Assessment: Photovoltaics In Disasters, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Jun 1998

Needs Assessment: Photovoltaics In Disasters, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

In recent years, solar energy has been used sporadically for disaster relief. Disaster relief organizations knew very little about photovoltaics; therefore, the technology was not included in their plans or operations. Likewise, the photovoltaic (PV) industry has not been directly involved on disaster teams, and did not aggressively pursue associated markets.

However, the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) recently completed an energy needs assessment of disaster response, recovery and mitigation activities. The study found that PV is best suited for specialized or dedicated applications that need to operate for long periods of time. This paper …

Sustainability And Resource Assessment: A Case Study Of Soil Resources In The United States, Dana L. Hoag, Jennie S. Hughes Popp, D. Eric Hyatt Jun 1998

Sustainability And Resource Assessment: A Case Study Of Soil Resources In The United States, Dana L. Hoag, Jennie S. Hughes Popp, D. Eric Hyatt

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Assessment of environmental condition is critical to wise management and policy decisions. However, for some concerns such as sustainability, it is difficult to assess environmental condition because it involves disparate social objectives and an understanding of complex ecological systems. Here, a general framework is proposed to examine sustainability of environmental resources in objective, measurable ways. By using soil quality as an example, sustainability research is taken beyond theory and into application.
Sustainability depends on the quality of resource endowment. Endowment of a natural resource can be modeled as an index of quality to assess the degree of sustainable management. This …

Data-Driven Homologue Matching For Chromosome Identification, R. Joe Stanley, James M. Keller, Paul D. Gader, Charles William Caldwell Jun 1998

Data-Driven Homologue Matching For Chromosome Identification, R. Joe Stanley, James M. Keller, Paul D. Gader, Charles William Caldwell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Karyotyping involves the visualization and classification of chromosomes into standard classes. In "normal" human metaphase spreads, chromosomes occur in homologous pairs for the autosomal classes 1-22, and X chromosome for females. Many existing approaches for performing automated human chromosome image analysis presuppose cell normalcy, containing 46 chromosomes within a metaphase spread with two chromosomes per class. This is an acceptable assumption for routine automated chromosome image analysis. However, many genetic abnormalities are directly linked to structural or numerical aberrations of chromosomes within the metaphase spread. Thus, two chromosomes per class cannot be assumed for anomaly analysis. This paper presents the …

Automobile Air Bag Inflation System Using Pressurized Carbon Dioxide, Bart Adams May 1998

Automobile Air Bag Inflation System Using Pressurized Carbon Dioxide, Bart Adams

Dissertations

A novel air bag inflator based on the evaporation ofliquefied carbon dioxide was developed. A detailed qualitative model wasestablished on the basis of an extensive experimental study. An integratedquantitative model of this inflator was constructed.

The system was studied by discharging the inflatorinto a tank and measuring pressure and temperature evolution (0-50 ms). Thedispersion of the two-phase spray duringinflation was investigated by high-speed cinematography.

The optimal storage pressure of the liquid CO2was found to be 2000 psig (at 22 °C). Two distinct inflator behaviors wereidentified. First, at conditions corresponding to an initial entropy below the critical point, atwo-phase …

Removal Of Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Vapors In Biotrickling Filters : Process Modeling And Validation With Chlorinated Aromatic Compounds, Christos J. Mpanias May 1998

Removal Of Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Vapors In Biotrickling Filters : Process Modeling And Validation With Chlorinated Aromatic Compounds, Christos J. Mpanias

Dissertations

This study dealt with the removal of vapors of volatile organic compounds from airstreams in biotrickling filters (BTFs). A detailed general model was developed for describing the process under steady-state conditions. The model accounts for mass transfer between phases (air, liquid, biofilm) and biodegradation of pollutants in the biofilm. It also accounts for potential kinetic interactions among pollutants as well as potential process limitations by oxygen availability.

The general model was experimentally validated using mono-chlorobenzene (m-CB) and ortho-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) as model compounds either alone or in mixture with each other. Before BTF experiments were undertaken, a systematic kinetic study was …

Fluorescence Spectroscopy For The Characterization Of Total Organic Carbon And Disinfection By-Product Formation, Matthew Brendan Washington May 1998

Fluorescence Spectroscopy For The Characterization Of Total Organic Carbon And Disinfection By-Product Formation, Matthew Brendan Washington

Theses

One of the concerns facing the drinking water industry is the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the disinfection stage of treatment. Organic DBPs form during the oxidation of the natural organic matter (NOM) found in natural waters by the application of a disinfectant, such as chlorine.

NOM is composed of two aggregate materials, humic and non-humic substances. It is unknown which portions of NOM react with the oxidant to form DBPs. Methods used to predict the formation of DBPs include total organic carbon (TOC) analysis and Trihalomethane Formation Potential (THMFP), which are time consuming and do not give specific …

Demanufacturing Metrics For Industrial Fasteners And Disassembly Process, Narendra P. Raj May 1998

Demanufacturing Metrics For Industrial Fasteners And Disassembly Process, Narendra P. Raj

Theses

As the society progresses towards ecological maturity, the issue of reducing the environmental burden imposed by used products becomes increasingly important Environmental issues are becoming increasingly relevant for product designers and manufacturers. Public awareness of the value and fragility of an intact ecology is constantly growing, and the traditional assumption that the cost of ecological burdens to be shared by a society, as a whole is no longer accepted. Environmental protection legislation requiring manufacturers to "take back" and recycle used products will be a commonplace throughout Europe and the U.S. in the near future.

Demanufacturing involves separating and disassembling a …
