Remote Sensing And Artificial Intelligence-Based Modeling And Prediction Of Harmful Algal Blooms In Lake Pontchartrain, Ian Smith
LSU Master's Theses
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and particularly toxic cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) have become a growing threat to the environment, economy, communities, and human and animal health. This is particularly true for Lake Pontchartrain. Forecasting the occurrence of cyanobacterial HABs in Lake Pontchartrain is a process that currently does not exist, as nowcasting by the NCCOS Algal Bloom Monitoring System or the similar system implemented by the U.S. EPA is currently the only method to monitor HAB production in the Lake. This thesis made this process possible by identifying antecedent environmental conditions controlling CyanoHABs, describing the conditions using NASA satellite …

Enhanced Throughput Of Aligned Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Manufacturing Via High-Speed Centrifugal Spinning, Jason Glen Ippolito
Enhanced Throughput Of Aligned Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Manufacturing Via High-Speed Centrifugal Spinning, Jason Glen Ippolito
Theses and Dissertations
Centrifugal spinning is noteworthy due to its high fiber throughput rate compared to other nanofiber manufacturing platforms. It is capable of producing fibers in the nanoscale diameter range from a multitude of polymers, such as polyacrylonitrile (PAN). With a traditional centrifugal spinner, fiber can be rapidly spun and collected on static posts. However, the use of static posts inevitably forms a dense ring of fiber after a short period of time, and this fiber build up can halt the spinning process. In this work, the factors that influence the throughput and scalability of highly aligned centrifugally spun PAN fibers are …

A Neutrosophic Framework For Assessment Of Distributed Circular Water To Give Neighborhoods Analysis To Prepare For Unexpected Stressor Events, Mohamed Abouhawwash, Mohammed Jameel, Sameh S. Askar
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The global water issue is caused by a number of factors, including extreme weather, population increase, and industrial activity. One of the reasons we're running out of water as a planet is because of the outdated take-make-use-throw-away linear paradigm of handling water. It has been suggested that the circular economy may help alleviate water shortages by inspiring a fundamental change in municipal water infrastructure. Reduced consumption, recovered natural resources, and minimal waste are the three pillars of a circular water supply. A dispersed water supply is more adaptable and robust than a centralized one because it gives communities more time …

Piezoelectric And Conductive Polymer Based Flexible Devices Enabling Cardiovascular Health Sensing And Energy Harvesting, Andrew Closson
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Piezoelectric materials show great promise for low-power wearable and implantable sensing, but their rigidity makes it challenging to integrate them with biological tissue. To address this, researchers have started exploring polymer-based functional materials that offer flexibility and are suitable for interfacing with the human body. However, these materials are still in their early stages, and a framework is necessary to illustrate how these materials, in conjunction with novel fabrication techniques and device designs, can enable the development of multi-functional sensing and energy harvesting devices.
This thesis utilizes highly scalable fabrication methods for functional polymers to build and test a flexible …

The Biological Activity Of Dual-Responsive Glycopolymers For Intracellular Codelivery Of Antigen And Lipophilic Adjuvant, Micaela Shields
Honors Theses
Subunit vaccines present themselves as an attractive alternative to traditional approaches to vaccines, which utilizes whole organisms to trigger an immune response. While these traditional approaches have proven themselves reliable within the history of vaccinations, they generally deliver subpar robust cellular-mediated immunity and pose many safety risks. Composed of proteins and /or peptides, subunit vaccines are safer and more precise alternatives to traditional approaches. However, the pharmacokinetic properties of the macromolecules that make up these vaccines hinder the subunit vaccine’s level of immunogenicity [d1] Examples of this hindrance include but are not limited to aggregation at the injection site and …

Antimicrobial Activity And Mechanism Of Amyloid Proteins And Synthetic Conjugated Polyelectrolytes, Fahimeh Maghsoodi
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Although the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is still unknown, it is widely considered that the accumulation of amyloid plaques composed of the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide in the brain is linked to neurodegeneration. Co-localization of viral DNA with Aβ plaques, the association of brain infection and AD, and research indicating the protective effect of Aβ against bacteria and fungi in mice and human cells have led to the hypothesis that Aβ expression and deposition may be central to its function as an antimicrobial peptide (AMP). In my thesis research, we seek to elucidate how Aβ functions as an AMP …

Lagoon systems consist of multiple preliminary lagoons, but mainly rely on long-term facultative lagoons for most analyte removal. In this study, one particular lagoon wastewater treatment system (named Municipality A Wastewater Treatment Plant) is investigated due to noncompliance with governmental standards provided by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Samples were collected by researchers at 4 different instances inside of the treatment systems. These samples were sent to an analytical laboratory for testing. The readings from these samples …
Evaluation Of Conservation Practices Effect On Water Quality Using The Swat Model, Vivek Venishetty
Evaluation Of Conservation Practices Effect On Water Quality Using The Swat Model, Vivek Venishetty
Theses and Dissertations
The deterioration of water quality due to human-driven alternations has an adverse effect on the environment. More than 50% of surveyed surface water bodies in the United States (US) are classified as impaired waters as per the Clean Water Act. The pollutants affecting the water quality in the US are classified as point and non-point sources. Pollutant mitigation strategies such as the selective implementation of best management practices (BMPs) based on the severity of the pollution could improve water quality by reducing the amounts of pollutants. Quantifying the efficiency of a specific management practice can be difficult for large watersheds. …
Wildfire-Altered Geotechnical Soil Properties And Their Impact On Subsequent Landslides, James M. Kellogg
Wildfire-Altered Geotechnical Soil Properties And Their Impact On Subsequent Landslides, James M. Kellogg
Theses and Dissertations
Wildfires result in altered landscape as well as altered soil properties. Wildfires result in conditions that are more susceptible to geotechnical hazards introducing a potential for cascading events in the surrounding area. Shallow landslides are common geohazards that result in a post-wildfire landscape. With an ever-increasing trend in wildfires, the need to better understand the impact wildfire-altered soil properties play on shallow slope instability is critical to evaluating risks to existing or planned development, mitigation of potentially hazardous conditions, prioritization of post-wildfire planning, and post-wildfire response preparation. The primary objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of …

Applications of high-performance plastics and composites have widely been expanded to various industries due to their superior properties, such as high strength-to-weight ratio, chemical resistance, and thermal/electrical insulation. However, the numerous possible combinations of polymers and reinforcements/fillers, the variability of these materials, and their complex manufacturing processes pose challenges in terms of efficiently developing new plastics and composites, accurately modeling their properties, and effectively monitoring and controlling their manufacturing processes. Integrating data-driven techniques, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics, is a promising pathway to overcome these challenges as it is demonstrated by the state-of-the-art research works …
Soil Respiration Measurements Reveal High Retention Of Organic Carbon From Corn Residue Derived High-Lignin Fermentation Byproduct Enabling Sustainable Lignocellulosic Biofuel Production, Michelle Sun Wang
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
While 2G biofuel production can utilize non-edible, lignocellulosic feedstocks such as agricultural residues to produce liquid fuel, harvesting crop residues is unsustainable without careful management of the soil underneath. By harvesting a fraction of the crop residues left in the field after harvest, soil health can diminish and critically, the soil organic carbon (SOC) stored in agricultural fields can decrease. Currently, in the most popular 2G process models published, the issue of soil degradation remains unresolved with residue harvest strategies receiving considerable attention in the literature and other SOC management strategies receiving far less. Specifically, the strategy of returning the …

Consolidated Chamber Design And Protocol For Olfactory Conditioning Assay With Drosophila Melanogaster, Sasha Bronovitskiy, Andres Castillo, Michael Yan, Fang Ju Lin
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
The olfactory conditioning assay is widely used in Alzheimer’s disease research to quantify learning and memory in Drosophila melanogaster. The assay tests ability to recall an aversive conditioned stimulus of scent paired with electrical shock when presented a choice between shock-associated and unrelated scents. The T-maze, a commonly used apparatus for olfactory conditioning assays, employs an elevator mechanism to transfer live flies from the shock-delivering training chamber to the scent selection point. This elevator mechanism is known to cause fly casualty. T-mazes are not commercially available and often difficult to reproduce. Other existing variations of olfactory conditioning apparatuses use …
