Effect Of Temperature On Algal Removal By Alum Coagulation, Muhammad Anis H. Al-Layla, E. Joe Middlebrooks, Donald B. Porcella Jan 1974

Effect Of Temperature On Algal Removal By Alum Coagulation, Muhammad Anis H. Al-Layla, E. Joe Middlebrooks, Donald B. Porcella

Reports

Questions about the effect of temperature on algal cell coagulation and the relationships between algae removal and temperature, alum dosage, paddle speed, flocculation time, and settling time are answered. The investigations consisted of two series of tests: Studies on algae cultured under laboratory control, and algae in wastewater stabilization ponds. The jar-test technique was used for the coagulation of algal suspensions by alum. Coagulation of algae is caused mainly by the insoluble flocs of aluminum hydroxide. Other aluminum species also have coagulative properties but are far less effective. The destabilization of algal colloids results from enmeshment within the hydroxide precipitates, …

The Control Of Noise In Urban Areas., Edwin Eugene Frye Jr. Jan 1974

The Control Of Noise In Urban Areas., Edwin Eugene Frye Jr.

Masters Theses

"Noise has recently been labeled the 'fourth pollutant' and defined by some as the 'unwanted sound' that pervades our work environments and the privacy of our homes. This concern for noise and its effects has resulted from our nation's increasing population density, the increasing use of mechanized conveniences, the influx and growing use of mass transportation systems, and the public's awareness that noise not only 'annoys' and can increase everyday tensions and anxieties, but at certain levels can cause permanent hearing loss.

In order to curb the 'noise problem' legislators and municipal representatives began applying legal controls to noisy activities …

Evaluation Of Methods For The Recovery, Chemical And Toxicological Characterization Of Trace Organics, James Robert Matthews Jan 1974

Evaluation Of Methods For The Recovery, Chemical And Toxicological Characterization Of Trace Organics, James Robert Matthews

Doctoral Dissertations

"Organic contaminants are generated in substantial quantities by the activities of man and through natural processes, and are present in natural runoff, industrial wastes, and agricultural discharges; synthetic organic chemicals, many of which are refractory and reach surface and subsurface water, are of particular significance. Earlier studies have generally emphasized the organoleptic and esthetic problems caused by trace organics, although their acute and long-term toxic potential has also been recognized.

The overall objective of this investigation was the analytical and toxicological characterization of trace organics recovered concomitantly from Missouri waters of varied character by large-scale solvent extraction (SEM) and carbon …

Biocatalytic Oxidation Of Nitrilotriacetate, Saul Hammerman Sep 1973

Biocatalytic Oxidation Of Nitrilotriacetate, Saul Hammerman

Theses

The specific scope of this work is to study the biological and chemical effects of a single genetic strain of bacteria, Bacillus subtilis #9524, on the specific destruction to innocuous products of sodium nitrilotriacetate (NTA) and sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). Insofar as the same strain of bacteria was used each time, under limited variability and sterile conditions, the side effects of multiple bacterial strains and their inter-relationships among themselves and the organic substrates are eliminated. This has allowed for excellent replication of results.

This is a generalized technique for the evaluation of the biodegradability of a compound. Whereas tests with activated …

Social, Economic, Environmental, And Technical Factors Influencing Water Reuse, A. Bruce Bishop, Suravuth Pratishthananda, John Keith, Craig Colton, A. Berry Crawford

Reports

A growing population together with rising per capita income has resulted in increased demand for water for virtually all uses. At the same time there has been increased public concern for maintaining the quality of streams for recreation, sight-seeing, and other social uses, and to conserve environmental values. A partial answer to these conflicts in water use and management is more extensive waste water reclamation and reuse. Heretofore, water salvage and reuse has been mainly practiced in specific operational cases, such as recycling industrial process water, or on an ad hoc basis, such as a series of diversions and subsequent …

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Further refinements are made in the method of calculating amounts of carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere through the combustion of fossil fuels. Data available in the UN Statistical Yearbook are used as the basic sources rather than the summary, World Energy Supplies, U.N. Statistical Papers, Series J because the most recent data are available several months earlier in the yearbook and because data are included for natural gasoline, natural gas liquids, and cement production. Coal, lignite, crude petroleum, “marketed” natural gas, flared natural gas, and cement are itemized separately and revised CO2 emission estimates are made for …

Trends In Milking Systems, G W. Scott Jan 1973

Trends In Milking Systems, G W. Scott

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Twice daily milking is an essential task for the dairy farmer and the speed of milking influences the time available to him for other work and to the cows for extra grazing.

Modern milking systems can greatly contribute to these requirements by allowing the owner-farmer to handle a greater number of cows unaided, or in other situations to release labour from the shed for other work.

The following review leads from the better known basic sheds to the most modern types.

Disposal Of Cattle Feedlot Wastes By Anaerobic Digestion, Eric Bayard Rapp Jan 1973

Disposal Of Cattle Feedlot Wastes By Anaerobic Digestion, Eric Bayard Rapp

Masters Theses

"Disposal of animal waste represents a severe environmental problem, particularly in areas such as cattle feedlots where livestock are concentrated. Animal waste can be converted to carbon dioxide and methane by the autocatalytic process of anaerobic fermentation. A scheme, based upon this process, for the disposal of the waste from two different size feedlots is presented. The design of this process is based on kinetic data from the literature which are fitted to a kinetic model including diffusional resistances. Economic calculations based upon available cost data are made to determine the profitability of the process. Economic evaluations indicate that this …

Transmission Measurements Through Liquids In A White Cell, David Earl Hurley Jan 1973

Transmission Measurements Through Liquids In A White Cell, David Earl Hurley

Masters Theses

"The suitability of using the White cell for determining the extinction coefficient of liquids was examined by measuring the attenuation of electromagnetic radiation, in the visible part of the spectrum, through distilled water. The analysis of the transmittance measurements through liquids in a White cell does not provide a sufficient number of independent equations to solve directly for the extinction coefficient. Reasonable estimates however can be made by employing a correction which accounts for changes in the mirror reflectance due to a liquid-mirror interface.

The reduction in the transmittance of distilled water due to an oil film was studied for …

Determinations on the composite sample included total coliform, fecal coliform, fecal streptococcus, soluble pesticides, specific conductance, …

The Des Moines Rapids: A History Of Its Adverse Effects On Mississippi River Traffic And Its Use As A Source Of Water Power To 1860, Donald L. Enders Jan 1973

The Des Moines Rapids: A History Of Its Adverse Effects On Mississippi River Traffic And Its Use As A Source Of Water Power To 1860, Donald L. Enders

Theses and Dissertations

During the 19th Century, the Mississippi River was the chief commercial highway in the United States. But for two impediments, the Upper and Lower (Des Moines) Rapids, its entire course of 2400 miles would have offered an untroubled thoroughfare to watercraft.

The federal government, as well as private concerns, attempted throughout the better part of that century to alleviate the river of its barriers and to develop its rapids as a source of power. Those attempts were disappointingly unsuccessful, however, and not until the advent of the 20th Century, when the nation had matured both economically and technologically, was the …
