Merritt Square Shopping Center has a parking area for 4,700 automobiles and is located on the shore of Newfound Harbor which is classified as recreation waters (Class III). A literature survey of runoff studies in other areas has been made for both "state of the art" and evaluation of findings. Water samples were initially collected from five locations. Review of the analysis of these samples indicated that while color and turbidity appeared to decrease linearly with time, organic and inorganic concentrations did …

Feasibility Study Of The Utilization Of Solar Energy For Large Scale Power Production In The State Of Florida, Michael Propen Jan 1975

Feasibility Study Of The Utilization Of Solar Energy For Large Scale Power Production In The State Of Florida, Michael Propen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of large scale electric power generation in the state of Florida by means of solar conversion. Such systems convert solar radiation directly to electricity or to thermal energy and subsequently to electricity. With the latter method, solar energy is initially collected and converted to heat at high temperature through a working fluid. The heat is then used to power conventional heat engine generator systems. Several methods have been proposed for converting sunlight to useful work. The most promising of these will be examined from a technological and economic viewpoint.

Stormwater Management For Urban Areas, Gerald L. Chancellor Jan 1975

Stormwater Management For Urban Areas, Gerald L. Chancellor

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Stormwater management in urban areas is a major concern today. The problem of disposing of this stormwater runoff in a satisfactory manner is very difficult indeed. Both the quantity and quality aspects of the runoff must be dealt with to obtain a solution of this problem. The water quality of the runoff can vary depending upon the different land uses of the drainage basin. The quantity of the stormwater runoff also depends upon the land uses, the rainfall intensity and duration of the storm. The traditional methods available for determining the quantity of the stormwater runoff are numerous. These traditional …

"Storm", A Mathematical Model Applied To The Shingle Creek Basin, Jay G. Foy Jan 1975

"Storm", A Mathematical Model Applied To The Shingle Creek Basin, Jay G. Foy

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Stormwater management necessitates a regional plan based on the best practical methods. "Storm", a mathematical model, is employed to simulate runoff conditions in the Shingle Creek Basin. The computed runoff quantity is calibrated directly with the streams hydrograph. Runoff quality is predicted with two sets of pollutant loading rates. The scope of the model is expanded by development of parametric curves that can be used to convert measured quality data to input land use loadings. A parametric study is also performed to fabricate the effects of urbanization on the Shingle Creek Basin.

A Study Of Trace Organic Emissions In Mining And Milling Wastewaters In The New Lead Belt Of Southeastern Missouri., Alan James Callier

Masters Theses

"The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the trace organic contributions by two lead and zinc mining and milling operations in Southeastern Missouri. A secondary objective was to evaluate a reverse osmosis-solvent extraction method for use in recovering trace organics.

Trace organics were recovered in the first phase of the study following procedures as outlined by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), with chloroform and benzene being used as the solvents. The data indicated that the milling waste contained a larger concentration of trace organics than the excess mine water. Furthermore, it was shown that recycling …

An Organizational Structure For A Highway Agency., Frank L. Carroll Jan 1975

An Organizational Structure For A Highway Agency., Frank L. Carroll

Masters Theses

"Highway agencies in the past have been organized to give primary consideration to economic factors. Th e National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 changed this concept by requiring all states to reevaluate their highway organizations in order to ensure that social and environmental factors, as well as economic factors, are considered.

Various state highway organizations are analyzed to determine the way in which consideration is given to the social, economic and environmental effects of design, and a model organizational structure for a highway agency is developed.

Because considerable difference exists in the ways in which the states have approached the …

A Rock Classification Schema, Robert C. Deen, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer Sep 1974

A Rock Classification Schema, Robert C. Deen, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The need for engineering data on earth materials for use in site selection, design, construction, and maintenance of major engineering structures is generally accepted. Probably the most pressing need is for such data to use in preliminary considerations of site selection and design alternatives. Maps and(or) surveys giving the areal distribution of earth materials and their characteristics, together with topographic maps available for many areas, would permit much preliminary work on engineering structures to be done without the engineer ever having to leave his office.

Industrialized-Subsidized Housing In The Hackensack Meadowlands, Andrew Carl Gildersleeve Jun 1974

Industrialized-Subsidized Housing In The Hackensack Meadowlands, Andrew Carl Gildersleeve

Theses

New Jersey as well as the rest of the nation is beginning to feel the pinch of what has been termed the housing crisis. The products of the World War II baby-boom are now reaching the age where they require homes of their own, making the demand for good quality low-cost housing very high. At the same time, the demand for good public housing continues to grow and we are learning that our previous efforts in this field have been far from satisfactory.

In the course of this study I have looked into the possibilities of solving a portion of …

A Rock Evaluation Schema For Transporting Planning In Kentucky, C. D. Tockstein, M. W. Palmer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The initial goal was to devise an engineering classification system for intact rock samples based on simple index tests which could be used to categorize Kentucky surface and near-surface rock types and assist Kentucky Department of Transportation personnel in planning for transportation facilities. While conducting the literature survey, several facts become apparent:

  1. a large number of rock classification systems, geologic and technical, general and specific, already existed;
  2. an equally large number of index tests had been devised; and
  3. there was a lack of communication among those involved in specialized areas of rock-related work (geologists, civil engineers, mining engineers, etc.), and, …

An Evaluation Of In-Stream Structures Designed To Provide Fish Habitat, Charles H. Call Jr. May 1974

An Evaluation Of In-Stream Structures Designed To Provide Fish Habitat, Charles H. Call Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In-stream concrete structures were studied through model tests and river tests. The model studies indicated that four designs provided good habitat in the model stream. These structures were the inverted weir, the "V" structure, the slab with legs and the cylinder. Through the river studies it was determined that these structures did not influence enough of the total river area to be effective in providing good fish habitat. Also an appreciable amount of yearly maintenance would be required to free the structures from silting in, debris, and vandalism. The slab with legs was the only promising structure.

Interfaces Of Steam Electric Power Plants With Aquatic Ecosystems, Gerald J. Lauer, William T. Waller, Guy R. Lanza

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

Growth and reproduction may be stimulated by increased temperature in the cooling system and thermal plume during seasons when ambient water temperature is less than optimum, but growth, reproduction and survival are reduced when the elevated temperatures become excessive. Some fish species congregate in the warm thermal plumes during cold seasons but are excluded from this living space by temperatures above their preference in the summer. However, the warm refuge provided by a thermal plume in cold seasons can be a death trap if a power plant shuts down suddenly and exposes the fish to cold shock exceeding their lower …

The trend in Western Australia is towards bigger herds, more efficient dairies, more fodder conservation and increasing production per cow and per· hectare.

The Design And Performance Of A Fiber Optic Pressure Transducer, Raymond Henry Pahler Jr. Apr 1974

The Design And Performance Of A Fiber Optic Pressure Transducer, Raymond Henry Pahler Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Design and performance characteristics of a fiber optic pressure transducer are presented and discussed. The transducer consists of a cylindrical metal housing with a specular reflecting aluminum diaphragm at the distal end and a circular array of fiber optic light guides at the proximal end. The center bundle is connected to a light source with the surrounding bundles carrying reflected light to a photodetector. A change in pressure on the diaphragm causes a deflection which in turn causes a change in intensity over the light receiving fibers. The intensity is converted to a voltage signal by the photodetector circuit. Thus, …
