Abnormal Response Of Tumor Vasculature To Vasoactive Drugs, Rosanna C. Chan, Charles F. Babbs, Richard J. Vetter, Carlton H. Lamar

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The effects of the vasoconstrictor, phenylephrine, and the vasodilator, hydralazine, on blood flow to tumor were studied and compared to those on blood flow to normal tissues in vivo. Regional blood flow and cardiac output were measured with the use of radioactive microspheres in 150- to 250 g inbred Harlan F344 rats bearing subcutaneous nodules of two types of transplantable carcinoma ("hard" and "soft") with microscopically different vascular patterns. Three groups of rats were treated with hydralazine, saline, or phenylephrine, and regional blood flow was determined at the time of maximum blood pressure response. Results were correlated with quantitative morphometric …

Cardiac, Thoracic, And Abdominal Pump Mechanisms In Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Studies In An Electrical Model Of The Circulation, Charles F. Babbs, Christopher Weaver, Sandra H. Ralston, Leslie A. Geddes

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

To investigate alternative mechanisms generating artificial circulation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), an electrical model of the circulation was developed. Heart and blood vessels were modeled as resistive-capacitive networks; pressures in the chest, abdomen, and vascular compartments as voltages; blood flow as electric current; blood inertia as inductance; and the cardiac and venous valves as diodes. External pressurization of thoracic and abdominal vessels, as would occur in CPR, was simulated by application of half-sinusoidal voltage pulses. Three modes of creating artificial circulation were studied: cardiac pump (CP), in which the atria and ventricles of the model were pressurized simultaneously; thoracic pump …

Intrapulmonary Epinephrine During Prolonged Cardipulmonary Resuscitation: Improved Regional Blood Flow And Resuscitation In Dogs, Sandra H. Ralston, William D. Voorhees, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Blood flow to vital organs was measured at five-minute intervals during 20 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and ventricular fibrillation in two groups of anesthetized dogs (n = 15 per group). The relationship between organ blood flow and restoration of circulation after 20 minutes was assessed with no additional treatment in Group I and with intrapulmonary epinephrine in Group II. Cardiac output and organ blood flow did not vary significantly in Group I. In Group II, intrapulmonary epinephrine significantly improved blood flow to the myocardium, the brain, and the adrenal glands. A mean myocardial blood flow of less than 0.13 …

Theoretical Advantages Of Abdominal Counterpulsation In Cpr As Demonstrated In A Simple Electrical Model Of The Circulation, Charles F. Babbs, Sandra H. Ralston, Leslie A. Geddes Jan 1984

Theoretical Advantages Of Abdominal Counterpulsation In Cpr As Demonstrated In A Simple Electrical Model Of The Circulation, Charles F. Babbs, Sandra H. Ralston, Leslie A. Geddes

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Animal studies and preliminary clinical observations suggest that the addition of interposed abdominal compressions (IAC) to ventilation and chest compression of standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) augments blood flow, blood pressures, and immediate survival. To investigate the physical basis for enhanced circulation during IAC-CPR, we developed an electrical model of the circulation. Heart and blood vessels were modeled as resistive-capacitive networks, pressures as voltages, blood flow as electric current, blood inertia as inductance, and the cardiac and venous valves as diodes. External pressurization of the heart and great vessels, as would occur in CPR, was simulated by application by half-sinusoidal voltage …

Fuel Ethanol From Raw Corn, Curtis Weller, M. P. Steinberg, E. D. Rodda

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Crude amylase preparations were produced by growing Aspergillus awamori and A. niger on raw, ground, whole corn. These Koji preparations were used to hydrolyze the starch of raw, ground whole corn to sugars during simultaneous fermentation of the sugars to ethanol by distillers active dry yeast. Ethanol concentrations of the fermentation beers were determined with gas-chromatography. These fermentations yielded an average of 89.6% theoretical ethanol compared to control, conventional, fermentations that had an average of 89.9%. Carbon dioxide evolutions were determined with use of Alwood valves. The initial fermentation rate was greater for the conventional fermentation than the Koji fermentation. …

Bulletin Ma 20 - Sheep Yard Plans - Flocks Up To 500, D. Bicknell

Animal production and livestock published reports

Manjimup Regional Office

Owners of small flocks often use much more labour per sheep than do owners of large flocks. Most of the difference in labour use is the design of sheep sheds and sheep yards, and a smaller affect from the mob size and experience in handling sheep.

This booklet gives some detail on design and construction of yards and a number of yard plans to handle up to 500 or so sheep. Many of the plans are from an Australian Wool Corporation publicatiot1 "Wool Harvesting Notes".

Preparation And Characterization Of Blocked Diisocyanate Monomers For Dental Applications, Stephen Richard Angeli Sep 1983

Preparation And Characterization Of Blocked Diisocyanate Monomers For Dental Applications, Stephen Richard Angeli

Theses

Six new monomers were prepared and characterized. The six monomers are blocked diisocyanate compounds. In the preparation 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate was first blocked with 2=hydroxyethyl methacrylate in the para NCO position. Six different blocking agents were then used to block the ortho NCO in the preparation of the monomers: (1) p-methoxyphenol, (2) m-methoxyphenol, (3) o-methoxyphenol, (4) p-chlorophenol, (5) m-chlorophenol, and (6) o-chlorophenol. The six monomers were characterized by mp, liquid chromatography, IR, NMR, and elemental analysis. All the characterizations show that the monomers are indeed the desired products.

Interactive Computer Aided Design And Animation Of Spatial Mechanisms, Emmet B. Peter Jul 1983

Interactive Computer Aided Design And Animation Of Spatial Mechanisms, Emmet B. Peter

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis of planar and spatial mechanisms is often accomplished by either trial and error supplemented by computer analysis or by specific analytical techniques in the literature. In either case it is extremely helpful to be able to visualize a physical design as it emerges, and to see a graphic display of it in animated motion. This paper describes the development of a general interactive program for both analyzing and viewing a spatial 4-bar (RSSR) mechanism in animated motion. The analysis provides complete position, velocity, and acceleration information and, for the special case of the planar 4-bar, the same information …

The Effect Of Ultrasound On The Hydrolysis Of Carbohydrates, Adel A. Khamis May 1983

The Effect Of Ultrasound On The Hydrolysis Of Carbohydrates, Adel A. Khamis

Dissertations

Acid hydrolysis of dextran and cellulose were studied with and without irradiation with ultrasonic waves of different frequencies (17 - 150 KHz), and powers (0.4 - 200 w/cm2). In the case of both materials, the hydrolysis reaction was found to be first order with respect to the activity of hydrogen ions in the reaction medium. Weight average molecular weight was evaluated at different durations of the reaction course. The reaction rate of dextran was found to be proportional to the weight average molecular weight raised to the power 4/3, and raised to the power 4 for cellulose.

The …

Automated Instrumentation System For Studies Of Metabolic Rates In Rats, Suhas P. Pathak May 1983

Automated Instrumentation System For Studies Of Metabolic Rates In Rats, Suhas P. Pathak

Theses

The task of the instrumentation system is to measure the respiratory exchange in rats in a controlled experiment. Air is drawn at a predeter-mined rate in and out of rat chambers. The proportion of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the ensuing air indicates the respiratory rate of the rat. The entire operation is controlled by a microcomputer whose most important functions are: to direct the flow of air through the rat chambers by switching valves; and to collect data about the percentages of gases in question.

Thus with the help of a computer it is possible to monitor and control …

Evaluating The Design And Operation Of Irrigation Canals In Egypt, Amany El Kayal May 1983

Evaluating The Design And Operation Of Irrigation Canals In Egypt, Amany El Kayal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A computer simulation model for temperature data was developed in order to generate synthetic daily temperature. The model consists of two components: a deterministic component represented by a Fourier series fit, and a stochastic component represented by an autoregressive model. The simulation model was proven to be able to preserve the main statistics of the historical series.

The data generated by the above temperature model were used as an input to an irrigation water requirements simulation model. This model incorporates the probabilistic nature of these requirements. The irrigation system of Abo Raya area in Egypt was used to demonstrate the …

Plan Of Study For Cross Florida Barge Canal: Economic Analysis, United States. Army. Corps Of Engineers. Jacksonville District Mar 1983

Plan Of Study For Cross Florida Barge Canal: Economic Analysis, United States. Army. Corps Of Engineers. Jacksonville District

Correspondence and Textual Material

At the time of the previous study of transportation savings, commerce in coal primarily for electric power generation could not be ·projected with any degree of accuracy because most electric utilities had not developed firm plans for building new coal-fired plants· or for converting from petroleum products or natural gas to coal at existing plants. Today, with plants already constructed that will burn coal, there is a greater probability of defining coal needs. So there is a need to reevaluate potential coal traffic via the CFBC. Also there is a need to evaluate the other types of benefits mentioned under …

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Three-hourly weather data for 7 locations in the Southeast and Central United States were used to evaluate the feasibility of evaporative cooling for reducing swine stress. Stress was defined as a relationship between dry and wet bulb temperatures which exceeded a stress index of 85. This analysis indicates that properly installed evaporative coolers could reduce the number of hours that stress would occur in swine facilities from 89.6 to 96.4% depending on location.

A Dairy Cow Housing System Featuring Motel Free Stalls, Robert L. Fehr, William L. Crist Jan 1983

A Dairy Cow Housing System Featuring Motel Free Stalls, Robert L. Fehr, William L. Crist

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates

The term motel free stalls describes a milking cow housing system that utilizes roof area which protects only the free stalls. Alleys are only partially protected by the roof overhang. This system provides little protection from extreme temperatures but can provide some summer protection if properly constructed. Motel free stall systems reduce the initial cost of constructing lactating cow housing. Motel free stall system described in this paper should be used with caution in climatic regions colder than Kentucky because of limited protection from extreme cold temperatures. This paper describes the application of motel free stall housing systems and a …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of Crude Oil On Two Freshwater Lake Ecosystems, Martin D. Werner, V. Dean Adams, Vincent A. Lamarra Jan 1983

An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of Crude Oil On Two Freshwater Lake Ecosystems, Martin D. Werner, V. Dean Adams, Vincent A. Lamarra

Reports

Responses of two freshwater lake ecosystems of the Intermountain West to crude oil impaction were investigated. The research was conducted in two phases; in the first phase effects of crude oil were studied on an ecosystem established in three phase laboratory microcosms (gaseous-aqueous-sediment), which simulated the natural lakes. Notable responses of the microcosm ecosystem to oil impaction included: an increased oxygen demand by the biological community, nutrient immobilization, a reduction in plant biomass accumulation and a heterotrophically dominated ecosystem. The increased availability of biologically degradable reduced carbon (i.e., the oil) and nutrient immobilization, rather than toxic effects of oil on …

Effects Of Cadmium On Streams And Irrigated Agriculture In The Presence And Absence Of Oil Shale Leachate, Douglas A. Selby, Jean M. Ihnat, Fredrick J. Post, Jay J. Messer

Reports

Artificial streams, soil perfusion columns, and potted plants were exposed to 20 ug Cd/l in the presence and absence of unretorted oil shale leachate. High cadmium accumulations occurred in the stream biota, but did not measurably affect community structure or function. The presence of oil shale leachate had no effect on bioaccumulation or ecosystem structure or function. Nitrification in soil columns was enhanced by the presence of the organic fraction of oil shale leachate, but this effect was not observed when cadmium was present. Crop accumulation of cadmium was somewhat higher in alfalfa and radishes irrigated with leachate, but did …

Fecal Coliform Release Studies And Development Of A Preliminary Nonpoint Source Transport Model For Indicator Bacteria, Everett P. Springer, Gerald F. Gifford, Michael P. Windham, Richard Thelin, Michael Kress

Reports

The effect of grazing on water quality has been documented by bacteriological studies of streams adjacent to grazed areas. Bacterial release from fecal deposits is a parameter of the pollution transport mechanism that is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to determine a fecal coliform release function for cattle fecal deposits. Standard cowpies were rained on with a rainfall simulator, and the fecal coliform counts were determined using the most probably number (MPN) method of enumeration. The fecal deposits were rained on at ages 2 through 100 days. The effects of rainfall intensity and recurrent rainfall were tested. …
