The Effects Of Pressure On The Kinetics And Mechanisms Of The Bod Reaction, Peter Sereico
The Effects Of Pressure On The Kinetics And Mechanisms Of The Bod Reaction, Peter Sereico
Dissertations
The research was concerned with the kinetics and mechanisms of BOD reduction due to pressurization. The initial investigations involved attempts to reproduce and interpret the results of previous investigators. Thereafter, actual wastewater samples were pressurized and changes in the wastewater characteristics were analyzed and recorded. Based on the findings, possible mechanisms for creating the changes noted were proposed.
To test the mechanisms considered, samples of pure compounds were prepared and pressurized. The results of this analysis eliminated all of the mechanisms but the actual one. The mechanism responsible for changes in BOD profile under pressure conditions is the hydrolysis of …
Three Studies On Airborne Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Carol Sophia Eveleens
Three Studies On Airborne Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Carol Sophia Eveleens
Theses
Three studies have been conducted on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons found on airborne particulate matter. The first investigation involves the determination of fly ash "activity" in the reaction of two PAHs adsorbed on its surface. Mass spectrometry is used to monitor the exchange of hydrogen and deuterium atoms between anthracene and anthracene-d10. The results indicate that some fly ashes exhibit "activity" in the reactions of PAHs adsorbed on its surface. The second investigation involves the determination of cyclopenta[cd]pyrene (CcdP) and benzo[ghi]flouranthene (BghiF) on samples of airborne particulate material collected from two automobile traffic tunnels. Glass capillary gas chromatography with a precolumn …

Computer Based Instrumentation System For Measurement Of Cardiac Output In Small Animals, Prasad L. Gavaskar
Theses
The task of the instrumentation system is to measure cardiac output in animals like rats, dogs, etc. A thermal-dilution method is used for this purpose. The temperature change due to injection of saline is picked up by thermo-couple microprobes implanted in the blood-vessel. The signal after conditioning is fed to a data acquisition system controlled by a computer.
With the help of a computer it is thus possible to monitor and control an experiment on several animals. The computer can sample the chambers sequentially. The sampling cycle duration and frequency are programmable. The data is collected and processed to determine …

Effects Of Two Chelating Drugs On Trace Element Metabolism In The Rat, Thomas J. Solecki
Effects Of Two Chelating Drugs On Trace Element Metabolism In The Rat, Thomas J. Solecki
Theses
Numerous drugs have structures which suggest that they and/or their metabolites are likely to be chelating agents and therefore might affect trace element metabolism. For some drugs, their therapeutic activity or side effects may be due to this chelating potential. Ethambutol, used in the treatment of tuberculosis, is an example. There is also evidence that other drugs, such as alpha-methyldopa, may possess this potential; although its primary therapeutic action occurs via mechanisms other than chelation. The objective of this thesis was to determine the effects of ethambutol and alpha-methyldopa on tissue metal concentrations and balance of four essential trace metals: …

Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe
Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe
Theses
Acrylamide causes a peripehral neuropathy. The biochemical mechanism by which it does so is the subject of intense investigation. One of the principal hypotheses for this mechanism centers on acrylamide's ability to inhibit glycolysis. This study examines the effects of in vivo exposure to acrylamide on the enzymes of the nerve terminal particle, the synaptosome.
A method for measuring glycolytic enzyme inhibition in the synaptosome was developed. Acrylamide (500 mg/kg) was administered to rats intraperitoneally. Synaptosomes were prepared by the method of Dodd et al, and lysed by sonication. GAPDH activity and NSE concentration were measured. GAPDH inhibition measured in …

An Experimental Circulatory Arrest Model In The Rat To Evaluate Calcium Antagonists In Cerebral Resuscitation, Lawrence De Garavilla, Charles F. Babbs, Willis A. Tacker
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
A circulatory arrest model in the rat was developed for use in cerebral and cardiac resuscitation studies. Whole-body ischemia was produced for 8 to 18 minutes by arresting the heart with a cold potassium chloride cardioplegic solution. Following cardiopulmonary resuscitation, minimal, standardized intensive care was provided. As the duration of ischemia was increased from 8 to 18 minutes, survival immediately following resuscitation decreased from 100% to 25%, and survival at 48 hours after ischemia decreased from 80% to 0%. Thirty per cent of the rats recovering from 11 minutes of ischemia suffered motor seizures. Survival and the incidence of motor …

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The addition of abdominal counterpulsation to standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation (IAC-CPR) during ventricular fibrillation has been shown to improve cardiac output, oxygen uptake, and central arterial blood pressure in dogs. The present study was performed to determine the effect of IAC-CPR on regional blood flow. Regional blood flow was measured with radioactively labeled microspheres during sinus rhythm and during alternate periods of IAC-CPR and standard CPR (STD-CPR) in nine dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital. Blood pressures and oxygen uptake were measured continuously. As in previous studies, diastolic arterial pressure was higher (30.8%) during IAC-CPR than during STD-CPR, as were cardiac output (24.5%) …
Preclinical Studies Of Abdominal Counterpulsation In Cpr, Charles F. Babbs
Preclinical Studies Of Abdominal Counterpulsation In Cpr, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Abdominal counterpulsation added to standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation improves blood flow in animal models when compared to chest compressions alone. Similar effects can be demonstrated in analog and digital computer models of the circulation. The technique generates both central aortic and central venous pressure pulses, and successful application of the method depends on maximizing the former and minimizing the latter. Proper technique is important in order to generate the largest possible arteriovenous pressure difference.
