Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Osteoclast-Bone Interface In Vivo, H. Zhou, R. Chernecky, J. E. Davies
Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Osteoclast-Bone Interface In Vivo, H. Zhou, R. Chernecky, J. E. Davies
Cells and Materials
Rat femoral bones were studied by scanning electron microscopy to demonstrate the morphology of osteoclast- bone matrix interfacial relationships. Two general morphological types of actively resorbing osteoclasts were observed . One cell type was approximately ovoid with highly fimbriated borders, fully attached and closely adapted to the resorption surface. The ruffled border of such cells was composed of a number of individual filopodia which were of uniform , regular shape and approximately 2-3 μm in length and 150 nm in diameter. They were found to penetrate the bone matrix to a depth of 1 μm and interdigitated with the surrounding …

Attachment Kinetics And Differentiations Of Osteoblasts On Different Biomaterials, U. Meyer, D. H. Szulczewski, K Moller, H. Heide, D. B. Jones
Cells and Materials
Primary bovine osteoblast cell cultures were used to study the response of osteoblasts ton three different biomaterials, ionomeric cement (IC), tri-calcium phosphate poly-L-lactic acid composite foil (TCP) and poly-L-lactate-polycitric acid composite foil (PLA). The cells which grew on the materials produced all typical bone matrix proteins and were osteoblast-Iike as shown by immuno-staining. Analysis of the cell attachment kinetics revealed significant differences within the first 7 hours between the various materials. The best rate of cell attachment was found on the IC surface, followed by the TCP and then the PLA surface. The kinetics of attach ment appeared to be …

Cell-Degradation Of Calcium Phosphate Ceramics, P. Frayssinet, N. Rouquet, F. Tourenne, J. Fages, D. Hardy, G. Bonel
Cells and Materials
Calcium phosphate ceramics are used in bone surgery under different forms: dense or porous ceramic s as bone substitute, thin ceramic coatings on metallic implants as an osseointegration enhancer. Their degradation depends on their physico-chemical properties and particularly on their chemical composition. Natural calcium phosphates of bone are degraded by mononuclear or multinuclear cells and the extracellular matrix induces the differentiation of the degrading-cells. Hydroxyapatite, which is one of the most used calcium phosphates , is known as a low degradation material. However, the histological analysis of implanted HA-materials both in animals and in humans showed that a cellular degradation …

Analysis Of The Bony Interface With Various Types Of Hydroxyapatite In Vitro, J. D. De Bruijn, J. S. Flach, K. De Groot, C. A. Van Blitterswijk, J. E. Davies
Cells and Materials
Rat bone marrow cells, capable of forming bonelike tissue, were cultured on three types of plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite that differed in degree of crystallinity from 15%, 43% to 69%. The interface between the mineralized extracellular matrix and the hydroxyapatite was studied with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. At the onset of bone formation, calcium and phosphorous-rich afibrillar globules, with a diameter varying from 0.2 to 0.8 μm, were produced and deposited onto the different substrata. These globules subsequently fused to form a homogeneous layer to which collagen fibres became anchored. Individual globules could be distinguished on the non-degrading 69 % …

Intravital Microscopic Evidence That Polylactide-Polyglycolide (Plga) Delays Neo-Osteogenesis And Neo-Angiogenesis In Healing Bone, H. Winet, J. O. Hollinger
Cells and Materials
The bone chamber implant (BCI) has allowed monitoring a healing bone defect as well as the effect of an eroding implant on the healing process. The BCI is a useful tool and intravital microscopy a valuable technique for obtaining quantitative data chronicling osseous wound healing. The physiological parameters that form the initial data base documenting healing are neo-osteogenesis and neo-angiogenesis. This review compares and characterizes osseous wound healing in a BCI loaded with an erodible copolymer, PLGA (polylactide-polyglycolide). To determine if a statistically significant deviation from normal healing had occurred, the results were compared with present and historical controls. In …

Generation And Legal Regulation Of Odors Form Animal Manures, J. L. Taraba, R. M. Williams
Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates
The present trend of animal and dairy product producers is toward total confinement facilities and larger animal herds. Generally the rewards to the producer for these practices are higher economic returns which result from higher feeding efficiencies and better quality products. However, total confinement is not without problems that were previously not present or were minimal in nature when animals were maintained in fields. Confinement facilities have a greater impact on environmental quality of both water and air. Presently, one of the major problems facing animal and dairy product producers is odor production. The greatest number of complaints concerning environmental …

Agricultural Engineering Extension Updates
Proper management and utilization of livestock waste can be a significant contribution to the economic well being of a livestock enterprise, since the wastes have considerable economic value if properly utilized. When returned to the soil as fertilize or soil conditioner, the value as a nutrient source has been will established. More recently, processed livestock wastes have been utilized as a high protein feed additives. Livestock waste should be considered a resource to be utilized rather than a disposal problem.

Computer Simulation Of Three-Dimensional Mechanical Assemblies: Part Ii - Computer Simulation, T. C. Chou, Frank W. Liou
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Computer simulation of the kinematic and dynamic behaviors of mechanical assemblies has become a very important tool in design and manufacturing, because the designer can foresee how a product is going to perform before the product is actually fabricated. However, up to now, the most current simulation modules are based on analysis from another kinematic or dynamic module by specifying the mating conditions between components, and then displaying the motion on the screen. This computer simulation actually performs similarly to a movie and can only provide visual checking. The drawback of this simulation approach is that designers are forced to …
Interposed Abdominal Compression Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Are We Missing The Mark In Clinical Trials?, Charles F. Babbs
Interposed Abdominal Compression Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Are We Missing The Mark In Clinical Trials?, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Straightforward considerations of abdominal anatomy in human beings set tight constraints on the theoretically optimal technique for abdominal compressions during interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR. The location and extent of the abdominal aorta lead naturally to the recommendation that IAC be applied at a level corresponding to the lower two thirds of the sterno-umbilical line. The force vector required to achieve contact compression of the abdominal aorta is inclined in the transverse plane at an angle of 11 degrees from the vertical toward the left. Such slightly angled compression subjects the abdominal aorta to maximally flattening; while the inferior vena cava …
Interposed Abdominal Compression-Cpr: A Case Study In Cardiac Arrest Research, Charles F. Babbs
Interposed Abdominal Compression-Cpr: A Case Study In Cardiac Arrest Research, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
When the abdomen is compressed manually in counterpoint to the rhythm of chest compression, in the performance of interposed abdominal compression-CPR, artificial circulation is approximately doubled in animal experiments and in electronic models of the circulatory system. These studies suggest that external manual compression of the abdominal aorta acts like an intra-aortic balloon pump to increase aortic pressure, whereas external manual compression of the abdominal veins acts to prime the right heart and pulmonary vessels before the next chest compression. As a result, perfusion pressures and flows are increased. Several clinical studies of this technique have shown promising results, including …

Development Of A Rapidly Computable Descriptor Of Prostate Tissue Temperature During Transurethral Conductive Heat Therapy For Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, U H. Patel, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition in older men in which the mass of tissue in the prostate gland gradually increases over the course of many years, ultimately leading to urinary outflow obstruction. Current treatment of this condition is to surgically remove the obstructing tissue. One novel alternative therapy being studied is transurethral thermocoagulation of excessive prostatic mass. In this approach, a heat emitting catheter is placed in the prostatic urethra, and the intraprostatic segment of the catheter is heated to temperatures above 60 oC for one hour. Two dimensional cylindrical coordinate computer simulations of this treatment modality were …
Chemical Tracing Techniques For Evaluating Rill Hydraulics, John E. Gilley, Eugene R. Kottwitz
Chemical Tracing Techniques For Evaluating Rill Hydraulics, John E. Gilley, Eugene R. Kottwitz
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Development of water erοsiοn and surface water quality control practices requires information concerning the hydraulic characteristics of upland areas. The relatively small flow rates normally found within rills make measurement of hydraulic parameters difficult. Chemical tracing procedures, originally developed for stream and river systems, have been successfully used to measure rill flow properties. A chemical tracer of known concentration is added to the rill and by knowing the degree of dilutiοn at a downstream sampling point, flow rate can be calculated. Rill flow velocity can be measured by determining the time required for a slug of tracer material to travel …

The Use Of A Factory Simulation To Evaluate A Flexible Control Structure For Integrated Manufacturing, Ling Ling Pan
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Once a control structure for an integrated manufacturing system is decided upon, manufacturing activities are limited by that structure. A flexible control structure is presented as an approach for accommodating a variety of manufacturing activities, without being limited to a single control structure. A flexible control structure is one that allows multiple types of control structure in the manufacturing process. For example, both hierarchical and non-hierarchical structures may be used in a flexible structure. The properties of a flexible control structure are discussed from the point of view of graph theory.
Control structures for automated manufacturing are difficult to evaluate …

A Toposcopic Investigation Of Brain Electrical Activity Induced By Motion Sickness, Dwight A. Roblyer
Theses and Dissertations
A toposcope was constructed as a new tool to study signal frequency and phase relationships in electroencephalogram (EEG) records collected while subjects were experiencing motion sickness. This new tool, named TOPOS, is a software-based, multi-featured version of Grey Walter and Harold Shipton's device which they first produced in the late 1940s. The TOPOS graphical display permits the study of instantaneous frequency relationships between the input channels and a reference signal of fixed or varying frequency. TOPOS adds a correlation grid to aid observers in detecting channel-to-reference correlation levels. Users can also vary several display parameters via menus to optimize the …
Retinal Modeling: Segmenting Motion From Spatio-Temporal Inputs Using Neural Networks, David E. Swanson
Retinal Modeling: Segmenting Motion From Spatio-Temporal Inputs Using Neural Networks, David E. Swanson
Theses and Dissertations
We applied two first-order, linear, time-varying, differential equations to the task of segmenting motion from sequences of images. The equations are modified Grossberg formulas for long-term and short-term memory models characterizing the neurotransmitter and cell-activity levels of a synapse and neuron. We described how a two layered, sensory, neural network can be built using the equations to simulate the amacrine neurons of the retina. The model is defined using adaptive input nodes (adaptive model) and is compared to a similar model without these nodes (O and G model). By replicating the basic amacrine neuron model to form both one- and …
