Methods For Viewing Radar Cross Section Data In Three Dimensions, David J. Tisdale
Methods For Viewing Radar Cross Section Data In Three Dimensions, David J. Tisdale
Theses and Dissertations
Radar Cross Section data is an important factor in the design of modern fighter and bomber aircraft. Minimization of the reflected radar energy is one of the key issues when choosing shapes and materials in new aircraft. Visualization of the energy scattered back to a radar is neither intuitive nor easy. The mission planner and pilot need to gain an understanding of the vulnerabilities inherent in the design of the systems they use. The advent of relatively low cost graphics workstations has made their use affordable in applications inconceivable only a few short years ago. This thesis examines three graphics …

Scientific Visualization Of Volumetric Radar Cross Section Data, Thomas G. Wojszynski
Scientific Visualization Of Volumetric Radar Cross Section Data, Thomas G. Wojszynski
Theses and Dissertations
For aircraft design and mission planning, designers, threat analysts, mission planners, and pilots require a Radar Cross Section (RCS) central tendency with its associated distribution about a specified aspect and its relation to a known threat, Historically, RCS data sets have been statically analyzed to evaluate a d profile. However, Scientific Visualization, the application of computer graphics techniques to produce pictures of complex physical phenomena. appears to be a more promising tool to interpret this data. This work describes data reduction techniques and a surface rendering algorithm to construct and display a complex polyhedron from adjacent contours of RCS data. …
Failure Identification Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation For The Lambda Flight Vehicle, Peter D. Hanlon
Failure Identification Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation For The Lambda Flight Vehicle, Peter D. Hanlon
Theses and Dissertations
This study develops and investigates the performance of a Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (MMAE) to detect and identify control surface and sensor failures on the LAMBDA flight vehicle (a URV developed by Wright Laboratories). The MMAE uses a bank of Kalman filters that predict the aircraft response to a given input, with each filter model based on a different failure hypothesis, and then forms the residual difference between the prediction and sensor measurements for each filter. The MMAE uses these residuals to determine the probabilities of the failures that are modeled by the Kalman filters. Initially the MMAE identified all …

Oxidative Mechanisms In Arterial Distension Injury: Observations Relevant To Restenosis After Angioplasty, Charles F. Babbs, Yuan Zhong
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
Background: To explore the hypothesis that tissue iron and reactive oxygen species, including superoxide (O2), mediate acute inflammatory and late hyperplastic responses to vascular injury, we studied experimental overdistension of normal carotid and femoral arteries in dogs. Experimental design: Arterial segments isolated in situ were distended with Ringer solution at 2 atmospheres pressure. In initial experiments the arteries were excised immediately after distension and immersed in diaminobenzidine solutions containing Mn++ ions to initiate histochemical reactions for O2. In other experiments distended arterial segments were reperfused with arterial blood in the presence or absence of the iron chelator, deferoxamine, or the …
Southern Nevada Effluent Wetlands: A Proposed Cooperative Venture Between The Bureau Of Reclamation & City Of Las Vegas, Bureau Of Reclamation
Southern Nevada Effluent Wetlands: A Proposed Cooperative Venture Between The Bureau Of Reclamation & City Of Las Vegas, Bureau Of Reclamation
Publications (WR)
Throughout North America there is a growing interest in constructed wetlands, both as relatively inexpensive, low-maintenance systems for removing nutrients from wastewater, and as a means of using municipal wastewater to enhance wildlife habitat and create public use opportunities. Because wetlands appear to have good potential as a component in the overall management of scarce water resources, the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) has undertaken several cooperative research and demonstration projects to evaluate their effectiveness in a variety of local environments. While a number of projects have demonstrated that wetlands can be beneficially employed to improve water quality, few such projects …

Quantitative Assessment Of Myocardial Oxygen Supply And Demand Using A Dynamic Model Of The Cardiovascular System, Badrinath R. Puranic
Quantitative Assessment Of Myocardial Oxygen Supply And Demand Using A Dynamic Model Of The Cardiovascular System, Badrinath R. Puranic
Theses
A quantitative understanding of the changes in coronary, pulmonary and systemic hemodynamic variables and their effect on myocardial supply and demand is important to the better management of anesthetic care of patients with impaired cardiac function. Animal studies have identified those hemodynamic factors that play an important role in determining the balance between oxygen supply and demand for the myocardium. These include myocardial contractility, left ventricular end-diastolic volume, systemic arterial pressure, systemic vascular resistance, and heart rate. The interactions of these factors are complex and their combined effects on myocardial oxygen supply and demand are difficult to predict a priori. …
The Acoustic Properties Of Human Femoral Bone, Mark Lacianca
The Acoustic Properties Of Human Femoral Bone, Mark Lacianca
Theses
Over the last decade, interest has grown in the use of the scanning acoustic microscope (SAM), with a single lens being used for both transmitting and receiving the acoustic signal. A major objective of this thesis was to determine if the transmission and ultrasonic techniques yield similar "quantitative" results, when measuring the elastic constants of human femoral bone. The transmission technique has been used since 1970 to yield values for the elastic properties of calcified tissue. Previously the SAM has been used as a qualitative tool, where an acoustic impedance map is produced. This map can show areas of bone …

Shop Floor Planning And Control In Integrated Manufacturing Systems, Tahir Mahmood
Theses
The implementation of a shop floor planning and control system is a prerequisite in establishing an effective computer integrated manufacturing system. A shop floor control system integrates management production goals with the capabilities and limitations of the manufacturing plant. Shop floor planning begins with a long term rough cut capacity plan and evolves into near term, capacity requirements and input/output plans. Shop floor control provides a status of in-process operations and a measure of the plants success in executing the plan. Effective use of technology on shop floor increases the efficiency of the manufacturing plant. Simulation is an important tools …

Cost Effective Maintenance Contracting, Bobby W. Meade, David Q. Hunsucker
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Increased emphasis on highway maintenance and the need to accomplish the maintenance programs as efficiently as possible, prompted this study. The objectives of the study addressed herein are the identification of maintenance activities performed by contract, determination of equivalent levels of service between contract performed and in-house performed activities, cost comparison of those activities, and recommendations to implement the findings.
Findings are that activities routinely performed by contract are cost efficient. A formal make-versus-buy decision making process should be developed. The process should be made available to District personnel and the make-versus-buy decision made at that level. Decision making processes …
Retention Of Cellular Viability And Growth Potential In Cryopreserved Bovine Arterial Tissue: Implications For Clinical Use Of Cryopreserved Vascular Allografts, Kip G. Gardner
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Segments of bovine calf aortas and pulmonary arteries were cryopreserved at -196° C for two weeks to 18 months and subsequently thawed. Cellular morphology, viability, and growth potential in these segments were then compared with the same attributes in segments from fresh (control) arteries. Scanning electron microscopy revealed no disruption of intimal surfaces attributable to cryopreservation. Endothelial cells were successfully cultured from all cryopreserved arterial segments. Endothelial monolayers grown from cryopreserved arteries had a cobblestone appearance and expressed Factor VIII antigen but not smooth muscle alpha-actin. Plating efficiency in primary cultures of endothelial cells was lower for cryopreserved arteries than …

Methanotrophic Bacteria For Nutrient Removal From Wastewater: Attached Film System, William J. Jewell, Yarrow M. Nelson, Mark S. Wilson
Civil and Environmental Engineering
It was hypothesized that nutrient removal from wastewater could be achieved by using methane oxidizing bacteria (methanotrophs). Because methane is inexpensive. it can be used as an energy source to encourage bacterial growth to assimilate nitrogen and phosphorus and other trace elements. This initial feasibility study used synthetic nutrient mixtures and secondary sewage effluent as feed to a laboratory-scale methanotrophic attached-film expanded bed (MAFEB) reactor operated at 35°C and 20°C. The MAFEB system operated successfully at low nutrient concentrations under a variety of nutrient-limited conditions. Using a synthetic nutrient mixture with a nitrogen:phosphorus feed ratio (w/w) …

Field Calibration Of A Transient Model For Broiler Misting, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults, Robert W. Bottcher, Shu Hui Zhang
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
A transient model to predict temperature within a tunnel ventilated broiler house during misting is developed. The model is calibrated with field data to obtain steady-state constants; transient predictions are compared to measured temperatures during cyclic misting for two different size birds. Measured temperatures during cyclic misting are shown to swing between steady-state asymptotes predicted from the model. Transient response of the model was faster than measured temperature data, in part due to temperature sensor dynamic response. The model predicts the length-wise temperature profile within the building during misting, and can be used to investigate alternate misting strategies and designs. …

A Study In Use And Management Of De/Anti-Icing Constituents With Regard To New Storm Water Legislation, Darren P. Gibbs, Bruce L. Willing
Theses and Dissertations
This research identified management practices of airfield and aircraft de/anti-icing constituents which may be implemented to deal with new storm water legislation. Storm water regulations require that deicing operations obtain a NPDES permit for discharges into storm water runoff which may mandate the use of Best Management Practices. An FAA civilian airport survey and a USAF survey were used, with a literature search, to identify practices of de/anti- icing constituents. Four major constituents are used-glycol, urea, calcium magnesium acetate, and sodium formate. Concerns of uncontrolled release of the constituents include high BOD rates, nitrate and nitrite enrichment, impaired aesthetic water …

A Methodology For The Characterization And Management Of Nonpoint Source Water Pollution, David M. Praner, Gordon M. Sprewell
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was development of a methodology for characterization and management of Nonpoint Source (NPS) water pollution. Section 319 of the 1987 Water Quality Act requires states to develop management programs for reduction of NPS pollution via Best Management Practices (BMPs). Air Force installations are expected to abide by federal, state, and local environmental regulations. Currently, the Air Force does not have a methodology to identify and quantify NPS pollution, or a succinct catalog of BMPs. Air Force installation managers need a package to assist them in meeting legislative and regulatory requirements associated with NPS pollution. Ten …

Modification, Reimplementation And Studies Using The Meisner Model Of The Heart, Ari Zvi Zivotofsky
Theses
The study of left ventricular filling in both the normal and the pathological heart is of great importance. A computer model simulation of the heart with emphasis on mitral flow was designed by Meisner in 1986 and implemented in QuickBASIC. This paper discusses how the original program was altered to be able to perform "Parameter vs. Parameter" runs in which it can be observed how varying an input parameter affects output parameters. The output data is then formatted in such a way that it can be used by QUATTRO PRO, a standard spreadsheet package, to yield graphical outputs.

The effect of pronuclear microinjection of DNA and culture in excised mouse oviducts on the development of porcine zygotes was assessed in this study. Precocious ovulation was induced in prepubertal gilts with pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin and hCG. Zygotes received either pronuclear microinjection of buffer alone, buffer containing a DNA construct, or no microinjection. Zygotes were cultured in vitro in either modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate medium (KRBI for 144 h or in mouse oviduct (MO) explant culture with KRB for 48, 72, 96, or 120 h. Pronuclear microinjection of DNA resulted in a lower (P < .05) cleavage index (CII than did buffer or no microinjection (CI 2.16 k .10 vs 2.80 f .13 and 2.93 f .lo). The CI loss was greatest for DNA-injected zygotes at the two-cell stage of development. Coculture of zygotes in MO resulted in a higher CI (P < .01) than did culture in KRB. Culture in MO for 72 h was the most beneficial system compared with MO for 48, 96, or 120 h (P < .05; CI 3.25 k .12 vs 2.66 k .18, 2.79 f .14, and 2.40 .14, respectively). Microinjection of DNA, not merely the mechanical procedure, was detrimental to early zygote development and may be the cause of low pregnancy rates.
