Critical Examination Of Outcomes For Emotionally Disturbed Boys In A Special Classroom, Betty F. Lauritzen

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a critical examination of outcomes for emotionally disturbed boys in the Special Learning Class. The classroom was designed to modify inappropriate behavior and remediate academic deficiencies.

Behavioral characteristics of thirty-one boys were divided into three categories: the overtly aggressive sub-sample, the passive-resistant subsample, and the infantile subsample. Case studies considered to be modal suggest the success of teacher-authority, token reinforcement, and behavior modification techniques depends on the quality of student-teacher interactions.

An intensive research of the literature for possible causes and corrective methods revealed inconclusive proof. However, two boys who were diagnosed to have inverted vision were given perceptual training exercises. The subjects responded to the treatment and in a short time were started on a reading readiness program. Although only two cases were found on which to experiment, …

Counseling For The Seventies: A Compendium Of Published Articles, Joseph Henry Koch

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This article, which appeared in the January '72 edition of The School Counselor, talks about what counselors have done, doing, and what the author, a school counselor, thinks they should be doing. He discusses some factors operating to narrow the counselor's role: the student stereotype of counselors as "schedule-changers," the administrative view of counseling as a clerical function, the "psychiatric myth" which casts any person in a helping profession in the role of dream analyst and explorer of the dark unconscious. The writer sees counseling as the major pupil personnel service available on the school campus. Counseling should be concerned …
