The Use Of Standardized Tests In The School Room, Esther E. Heyer Jul 1933

The Use Of Standardized Tests In The School Room, Esther E. Heyer

Bachelors’ Theses

The giving of standardized mental and educational tests has occupied a conspicuous place in the professional literature of the past few years. Ten years ago testing was almost unknown in the public schools except to discover those who were mentally defective for placement in "Special Classes". Schools in practically all large towns and in many small ones and also in country district are now making extensive use of test results. Being a movement which deals with a problem so intangible as the measurement of intelligence, it is often misinterpreted and misunderstood, thereby often seriously affecting the life of a child. …

The Special Reviewing Committee, with Mr. Leo J. The real meaning of profit and loss, the responsibilities and difficulties of the retailer and the wholesaler, the relationships of home and business establishments are part of the field of arithmetic..... In no subject is there the opportunity to teach the pupils the considerations that should underlie the …

An account of the methods and achievements of the Australian correspondence schools in instructing children living in isolated areas. It seems that Australia can claim to be the first country to have shown in a systematic way, and on a large scale, that it is possible to provide by correspondence a complete elementary education for children who have never been to school. Cunningham reviews the conditions giving rise to correspondence instruction, the growth and scope of the Correspondence Schools, curricula and methods, attainments and progress of pupils.

Project Teaching Of Manual Training, Henry J. Whitney Sep 1920

Project Teaching Of Manual Training, Henry J. Whitney

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Recent numbers of this magazine and other good publications have emphasized the necessity that manual training teachers have a well recognized theory back of their work, and further, that the value of the work of any teacher is in direct ratio to the clearness with which this theory is comprehended and followed in practice. A project is any activity purposed by an individual and by him carried through. Project teaching of manual training is the most difficult kind of teaching, but withall the most fruitful, for it furnishes the opportunity to develop those qualities of manhood that our democratic society …

A Review Of The Pedagogical Studies In The Teaching Of Spelling, Mary A. Grupe Sep 1913

A Review Of The Pedagogical Studies In The Teaching Of Spelling, Mary A. Grupe

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Despite the fact that a few far-seeing men have, from the early years of the eighteenth century, inveighed against the dominance of spelling and the "cruel drudgery" it entailed upon the learner, the subject remained an independent discipline far into the nineteenth century. To be able to spell was the criterion whereby to judge the educated man and so ingrained did this become in the popular mind that even to this day our grandfathers, nay our fathers, dubiously shake their heads because spelling no longer occupies a conspicuous place on the schoolroom program and because, as they insist, the rising …

Long-Term Outcomes Of Low-Achieving Third Grade Readers, Emily Jordan, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Arkansas Education Reports

Research shows that students who demonstrate low reading achievement in 3rd grade have trouble catching back up to grade level and being successful in school, compared to their peers who demonstrate early proficiency (Fiester 2010; Hernandez 2011; Juel 1988). This report seeks to investigate what happens to Arkansas public school students who demonstrate low achievement in reading in 3rd grade. Reading scores from three cohorts of students are followed from 3rd grade until high school, beginning with data from the 2008-09 school year and continuing through 2016-17.
