A Study Of The Academic Effect Of Non-Promotion In Yakima Elementary Schools, James R. Seamons

All Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine if there exists any statistical evidence that supports the commonly held belief that retaining students in grade school does not improve academic performance.

The cumulative records of all children retained, who met the criteria outlined in Chapter III, were examined. Their academic grades were recorded in nine subject areas. Improved performance during the retained year over the previous ones and during the years after retention over the years before retention, was very significant. This improvement was maintained in the years after retention.

An analysis of the data gives strong evidence supporting retention …

Statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the Reading Comprehension gains of controls and experimentals. The gains of both controls and experimentals was, however, found to be of significance. Conclusions and recommendations included suggestions for additional research and a discussion …

School Entrance Age And Its Later Influence On Academic Achievement, Gary J. Eubanks Jan 1974

School Entrance Age And Its Later Influence On Academic Achievement, Gary J. Eubanks

All Master's Theses

The influence of school entrance age upon the academic achievement of 434 eight grade students was examined. Students were divided into three age groups. Comparison on five California Achievement Test subtests and IQ showed no significant differences except between sexes on the Mechanics of English and Spelling subtests.

A biased sample made comparisons of the same students at the twelfth grade impossible. Comparisons between the students who did and those who did not take the twelfth grade test revealed significant differences.

Personalized Reading Program For Intermediate Grades, Pamela Kay Kelly Jan 1973

Personalized Reading Program For Intermediate Grades, Pamela Kay Kelly

All Graduate Projects

As the reading specialist in an elementary school, it was my responsibility to assist the classroom teachers with their reading program; specifically, with those students who were having difficulty. It was not feasible for me to meet with all who needed help; at the most, I could help forty-three students per week. The pace at which I had to function to assess and meet their individual needs became too great. In view of this situation, the following program was designed to stimulate every intermediate student's desire to read and to do so at his own pace.

An Evaluation Of The Value Of Physical Education In Helping The Slow Learner To Achieve, Donald B. Eldred

All Master's Theses

This study investigated the effects of daily and bi-weekly physical education on physical fitness and development of motor skills in mentally retarded boys. It also investigated the relationship of physical education and improvement in reading ability.

Twenty boys were selected from children attending special classes whose chronological ages ranged from nine to twelve and whose grade level was classified as fourth grade.

Analysis of the data indicated that the experimental group made significant gains over the control group in the Washington State Physical Fitness Test and Johnson's Fundamental Motor Skill Test for Elementary Children. The gains on the Informal Reading …

The Effects Of Contingent And Non-Contingent Reinforcers On Intelligence Quotients, Donald T. Edwards Jan 1973

The Effects Of Contingent And Non-Contingent Reinforcers On Intelligence Quotients, Donald T. Edwards

All Master's Theses

Eighty Caucasian fourth and fifth grade boys and girls were matched according to grade, sex and Total IQ on the California Short-Form Test of Mental Maturity. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale of Children was then given under four randomly assigned incentive conditions: 1) Tokens contingent upon correct responses, 2) Praise contingent upon correct responses, 3) Non-Contingent Tokens and 4) Non-Contingent Praise.

An analysis of variance of the Verbal, Performance and Full Scall IQs showed no significant differences between incentives. Similarly, comparisons by grade and sex indicated no significant differences.

Remediation Of Deficit Automatic Level Functions As Related To Second Grade Reading Achievement, Jack R. Hall Jan 1973

Remediation Of Deficit Automatic Level Functions As Related To Second Grade Reading Achievement, Jack R. Hall

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a study designed to determine if remedial procedures suggested by the authors of the ITPA would improve specific psycholinguistic functions and reading achievement. The Ss were 18 second grade children placed in matched pairs. They received 15 minutes of instruction per day for 60 days. The results did not indicate a significant improvement by the experimental group when compared to the control group

Recommendations include repeating the same experimental procedures using Ss with greater psycholinguistic deficits.

A Study Of The Effect Of A Concentrated Program Of Attitude Improvement On Reading Skills, Jo Ann M. Greer Jan 1973

A Study Of The Effect Of A Concentrated Program Of Attitude Improvement On Reading Skills, Jo Ann M. Greer

All Master's Theses

This study investigated the effects of a concentrated program of attitude improvement on reading skill. Seventeen low-achieving students participated. The year's instruction was divided into three phases: developmental reading during the first and third phases, and an attitude improvement program during the second.

Results from Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test and Roach Van Allen's An Inventory of Reading Attitude indicated accuracy, speed and comprehension decreased significantly during the attitude program. Vocabulary and attitude did not show significant gains. Upon reinstatement of the developmental reading program, comprehension increased and vocabulary decreased, both significantly.

A Study Of Visual Perception In Reading, Michael Lee Hoffner

All Master's Theses

This paper presents an experimental study, using an experimental group and control group, of the effects of visual perception training on the reading ability of eighth grade students. The Michigan Tracking Program and MKM Hunting Trails were the perceptual training programs used in the experiment. A null hypothesis was assumed and retained based on the statistical results of a t test at the .05 level of significance.

Recommendations included further investigation of the relationship of perceptual training to reading on a longitudinal base and employment of a larger population sample.

Developing And Testing An Interventionist Role For Elementary Counseling, Thomas M. Hyde Jan 1973

Developing And Testing An Interventionist Role For Elementary Counseling, Thomas M. Hyde

All Master's Theses

In this study a counselor worked with two teachers to increase their rate of approval behavior with the goal of reducing "non-attentive" and "disruptive" student behavior. Student behavior did improve in the predicted direction. When t tests were used to compare behavior change in these classes with behavior change in two control classes, significant differences were found for the reduction of "non-attentive" behavior and "non-attentive plus disruptive" behavior.

Results indicate that such interventionist techniques my be appropriate for elementary counselors.
