Issue In Equity For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students With Complex Support Needs: A Comparative Analysis Of District-Level Student Data, Rosalia Pacheco
Special Education ETDs
Research has shown that English learners with disabilities should have access to both special education and Title III services as required by law (de Valenzuela et al., 2006, 2018, 2016, 2022; de Valenzuela & Copeland, 2018; Kangas, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021). This quantitative study uncovers issues of educational inequities related to: (a) the identification of these students as English learners; (b) their access to Title III services; and (c) the instructional settings in which they are educated for culturally and linguistically diverse students with Autism (ASD), Developmental Delay (DD), Intellectual Disability (ID), Multiple Disabilities (MD), or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). …
Identifying And Negotiating Learning Needs Of Tutors And Tutees From The Lens Of Socially Just Literacy Teaching, Elizabeth Isidro
Identifying And Negotiating Learning Needs Of Tutors And Tutees From The Lens Of Socially Just Literacy Teaching, Elizabeth Isidro
Assessment Grants
The purpose of this project was to describe the learning needs of McGinnis Reading Center (MRC) tutors and tutees from the lens of socially just literacy teaching. To accomplish this, it was necessary to conduct a needs assessment of tutors and tutees through a survey and individual interviews. Determining their learning needs is crucial to enable the reading center director (henceforth referred to as the principal investigator or PI) to initiate program planning and engage in continuous program evaluation. Articulated needs would serve as the basis for program goals, learning outcomes, activities, data collection/analysis, and program modifications.
The Role Of Poetry In Cultivating Attentiveness, Curiosity, And Affinity In The Science Classroom, Albert Cheng, Rian Djita
The Role Of Poetry In Cultivating Attentiveness, Curiosity, And Affinity In The Science Classroom, Albert Cheng, Rian Djita
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
Poetry is endemic to classical education and often studied for its own sake. However, poetry is also posited to possess a pedagogical power not shared by prose or formal scientific language. Poetry’s distinctive effects on learning outcomes have been well articulated by philosophers since Plato and Aristotle, but their claims have not been subjected to an empirical test. We fill that gap in this study. We collaborated with a local classical grammar school and divided kindergarten, first grade, and second grade classrooms into two groups for a two-week science unit. One group of classrooms integrated poems about the topic of …

Leadership Matters: Supporting The Mental Health Needs Of Black And Latina/O Students In A Post Covid-19 World, Larry Walker, Michelle Sullivan, Nicola Stewart-Walker
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
Communities throughout the United States were devastated by the COVID-19 virus. For instance, the mortality rates are higher within Black and Latina/o communities compared to the overall United States population. The pandemic represents another problem that will contribute to anxiety disorders and depression among Black and Latina/o students. How we combat these issues is important. During the 2020-2021 school year millions of students returned to schools and some struggled to adjust because of the traumatic experiences associated with COVID-19. Students will need the support of administrators, teachers, and mental health practitioners. For this reason, this review of literature examined the …

Who's Got Your Six: A Formative Evaluation Of A Military-Connected Student Cultural Competency Workshop, Wayne N. Taylor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The University of South Florida (USF) ranks as one of the top 50 public universities in the nation. As of Spring 2022, 14% of the student population identify as military-connected students (MCS). MCS comprises Active Duty, National Guard, Reserve, veteran or military dependents. Many student veterans choose not to embrace their veteran identity due to feeling unaccepted or viewed from a deficit mindset by faculty, staff, and other students. Veteran studies research identifies the significant influence faculty and staff possess when addressing MCS retention and graduation rates (Lim et al., 2018; Vacchi, 2012; Vacchi, 2018). USF’s Office of Veteran Success …

Confusions Between English Nominal And Adjectival Forms Among Students At The Dar Es Salaam University College Of Education:, Loveluck Philip Muro, Benedict P. Lema
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper examines confusions between English nominal and adjectival forms among students at the Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE). In particular, it establishes consistencies and inconsistencies in the use of English nominal and adjectival forms; and informs pedagogical interventions that can be adopted to redress the situation. Data was collected from a review of selected students’ examination scripts, and then subjected to error analysis in relation to the identified themes. The findings show that students vary greatly in the way they use nominal and adjectival forms such that some errors are consistently predictable, while others are intricately …

An Examination Of Teachers’ Experiences With The Multi-Tiered System Of Support Process In A Middle School Setting, Martavious Kendrell Johnson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to understand teachers’ experiences when implementing the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support systemic framework in a middle school setting. The problem was teachers’ lack of emotional and tangible support from their schools when exerting time, energy, and resources necessary for successful implementation of the components of the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework. The theory that guided this study was Revans’ action learning theory (ALT), which consisted of four components: (a) problems, (b) clients, (c) self-advisors, and (d) processes. The central research question that guided this study was: what are the experiences …

Emphasizing Multilingualism In Teacher Education Courses: Teacher Candidates’ Responses To Translanguaging Pedagogy, Tuba Angay-Crowder, Jayoung Choi, Ji Hye Shin, Nihal Khote
SoTL Commons Conference
One of the presenters has embedded translanguaging pedagogy in her Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) courses for several semesters to increase teacher candidates’ pluralistic stance when working with multilingual students from immigrant backgrounds. Translanguaging honors all linguistic repertoires that multilingual learners bring to meaning construction. As TESOL course work often centers on students’ advancement of English skills without necessarily emphasizing multilingual development, she intentionally included activities and assignments related to translanguaging. In this presentation, we discuss how her teacher candidates responded to this pedagogy. The shared findings have implications for teaching and learning in teacher education courses.

A Review Of Formative Assessment Techniques In Higher Education During Covid-19, Daniel Asamoah, Masitah Shahrill, Siti Norhedayah Abdul Latif
The Qualitative Report
To meaningfully determine how well students have achieved learning targets, instructors must adopt specific formative assessment techniques. During the COVID-19 pandemic, existing studies have discovered the techniques instructors in higher education use in their formative assessment practices. However, there has not been any consensus on the prevalent formative assessment techniques used. In this study, we examined empirical documents to determine to what extent formative assessment has supported formal or informal techniques, or both. A total of 15 samples of published documents on the formative assessment techniques used by instructors in higher education were purposively selected and subjected to summative content …

Measuring Alignment Between Components Of An Educational System: An Extension Of Porter’S Alignment Index, Joe Kazemi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
At the heart of educational systems worldwide is the idea that components of an educational system (i.e. standards, curricula, instruction, and assessments) need to be in alignment with one other for the system to produce the desired results of improving educational outcomes. Thus, a thorough and reliable methodology for measuring alignment is necessary especially given the escalating use of student assessment results as a determinant of effectiveness for districts, schools and teachers (Ananda, 2003a).
Today, there are two predominant methods for modeling and measuring that alignment: Webb’s methodology (Webb, 1997, 1999), and Porter’s methodology (Porter, 2002, 2006; McMaken & Porter …
