Understanding Arts-Based Methods In Managerial Development, Steven S. Taylor, Donna Ladkin Mar 2009

Understanding Arts-Based Methods In Managerial Development, Steven S. Taylor, Donna Ladkin

Faculty Articles

With the rising use of arts-based methods in organizational development and change, scholars have started to inquire into how and why these methods work. We identify four processes that are particular to the way in which arts-based methods contribute to the development of individual organization managers and leaders: through the transference of artistic skills, through projective techniques, through the evocation of "essence," and through creating artifacts such as masks, collages, or sculpture, a process we call "making." We illustrate these processes in detail with two case examples and then discuss the implications for designing the use of arts-based methods for …

Self-Leadership And Self-Regulated Learning: An Investigation Of Theoretical Relationships, Angela M. James

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the behavior, motivation, and cognitive dimensions of self-leadership and self-regulated learning. This quantitative study used the Revised Self-Leadership Questionnaire measuring self-leadership, and the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory, Second Edition measuring self-regulated learning, to collect data. The sample was drawn from the undergraduate college student population of one small private university. The Pearson product moment correlation results indicated several weak-to-moderate relationships between self-leadership and self-regulated learning behavior, motivation, and cognitive strategy dimensions. This was a first attempt to compare the two self-regulation theories; the results indicate that SL and …

Leadership, Change And The Future Of Community Colleges, Jim Riggs Jan 2009

Leadership, Change And The Future Of Community Colleges, Jim Riggs

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The mantra we continuously heard throughout the fall 2008 political campaigns was the need for change, a term that has become synonymous with a better future and the avenue to prosperity. Nowhere does the change narrative ring louder and truer than at the community college. Many of us who have spent our careers in community colleges realize that our institutions, like our local, state and federal governments, must undergo significant change in order to stay viable in the future. However, just like our government and political leaders, there is a very large gap between what community college leaders say they …

Collaborative Design: An Ssm-Enabled Organizational Learning Approach, Anita Mirijamdotter, Mary M. Somerville Jan 2009

Collaborative Design: An Ssm-Enabled Organizational Learning Approach, Anita Mirijamdotter, Mary M. Somerville

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Within the context of a three year applied research project conducted from 2003-2006 in a North American university library, staff were encouraged to reconsider organizational assumptions and design processes. The project involved an organizational leader and an external consultant who introduced and collaboratively applied Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) practice. Project results suggest the efficacy of using ‘soft’ systems thinking to guide interaction (re)design of technology-enabled environments, systems, and tools. In addition, participants attained insights into their new roles and responsibilities within a dynamically changing higher education environment. Project participants also applied SSM to redesign ‘in house’ information systems. The process …

Ninth-Grade Interventions And The Impact On High School Graduation Rates, Shannon Mcbrady Jan 2009

Ninth-Grade Interventions And The Impact On High School Graduation Rates, Shannon Mcbrady

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

There is a need to become economically sensible when deciding on new school initiatives and reforms. This is partly due to increasing accountability and tightening school budgets. Hertzog & Morgan (1999) found the freshman year sets the tone for a student‟s entire high school career. Yet, frequently, ninth-graders struggle to feel connected to school and therefore experience failure. Often times this period of failure is related to the developmental process the ninth-grader experiences. Many ninth-graders struggle in various areas including behavioral growth, social pressures, and adjusting to the rigidity of high school (Mizelle & Irvin, 2000). Researchers have found that …

Construction Of A Scoring Manual For The Sentence Stem "A Good Boss--" For The Sentence Completion Test Integral (Scti-Map), Angela Christine Miniard

ETD Archive

Ego development theory, proposed by Jane Loevinger (1966, 1976), is the study of how an individual's processing of experience and meaning-making of the world develops. The tool used to measure ego development is the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (WUSCT), and its scoring manual is the foundation for the high validity and reliability of the measurement tool. Susanne Cook-Greuter (1999b) constructed a modified version of the WUSCT, the Sentence Completion Test Integral (SCTi-MAP), and in order to continue the trend of strong psychometric properties, a scoring manual needs to be constructed for the new sentence stems found on the SCTi-MAP. …

After implementing this training, qualitative data were gathered from instructors to identify their experience of the training and concerns related to incorporating issues of diversity into their classrooms (Study 1). At the end of the semester immediately following the training, quantitative data were gathered from instructors and their students to examine the interaction between students’ and instructors’ perceived diversity emphasis (Study 2). When allowed to choose the extent to which they incorporated issues of diversity in their classes, the instructors differentially reported emphasizing diversity …

Stability In The Context Of Change, Hallie Savage Jan 2009

Stability In The Context Of Change, Hallie Savage

Honors in Practice Online Archive

Last year at this time, I began to think about what I might adopt as a presidential theme. What could NCHC reasonably accomplish in 2008? If you recall, at that time we hired Liz Beck as Interim Executive Director, and one month before the conference we hired Cindy Hill. Major changes were inevitable in our organization. I began my presidency with a goal to work with the Board of Directors to establish stability in the face of these organizational changes. The goal of stability was in response to the need for a national office that would provide the resources for …
