Many cases of poor sight have been observed by the author during his teaching experience.  Since the classrooms in which these children studied were poorly lighted, it was though a survey of conditions in several schools would prove valuable in influencing the improvement of lighting conditions in these classrooms and in others.

The problem of the present study, that of playground safety, arose as a result of two conditions: first, numerous accidents on the playground of the Charles Major School, of which the author is principal; secondly, the observation that certain schools have completely abandoned the use of playground apparatus, the reasons generally given for such abandonment being frequence of injuries and damage suits against school officials resulting from these injuries.
