A Phonics And Whole Language Synthesis, Anne I. Allsworth
All Graduate Projects
The debate among phonics instruction and the whole language approach and the research supporting a balanced approach were examined. High utility phonics generalizations were identified from the literature. Those high utility phonics generalizations that were appropriate for the primary grades were applied to the vocabulary of a set of whole language readers. Lessons and activities were developed to integrate phonics instruction with the whole language materials for first grade students. Implications for further research and teacher training were discussed.

An Original School Safety Curriculum Unit, Spencer J. Iacolucci
All Graduate Projects
Safety Education is not a subject that should be taken lightly. North Mason High School Industrial Education Program had no formal safety curriculum prior to this point. A six week safety curriculum was developed to cover such items as, "Why teach safety?" to the identification and under- standing of the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act. The curriculum design is for hands-on learning in which the student will actively take part in the curriculum.

Content-Based Approaches And Second Language Instruction, Pi-Chu Su
All Graduate Projects
Integration of content-based instruction into an English curriculum based on communicative goals is suggested to better solve the problems of materials and syllabus design in Taiwan. Historical antecedents and the rationales for content-based instruction are reviewed to illustrate a modern perspective on the interwoven relationship between language and content learning. The project proposes a three-year content-based English program for Taiwan's elementary and preschool students. A first year curriculum and model lessons for mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts are presented.

Who Is Teaching Our Children To Spell? The Literacy Crisis In Teacher Education., Owen F. Watts
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Anyone engaged in marking student essays at tertiary level today cannot fail but to be aware of the increasing inability of students to express themselves in grammatically correct and cogent argument. The problem is even more serious when is prevalent among those students who are studying to become teachers. Lists of "school-boy howlers" derived from the students' essays are no longer funny, rather they are symptomatic of a crisis in literacy that is facing the educational systems of the nation. Testing of students within the Faculty of Education at Curtin University has shown that passes in Year 12 English examinations …
Managing Change In Schools: A Review Of The Western Australian Project, Rod Chadbourne
Managing Change In Schools: A Review Of The Western Australian Project, Rod Chadbourne
Research outputs pre 2011
In 1987, the Ministry of Education released a report entitled 'Better Schools in Western Australia: A Program for Improvement'.l It outlined radical proposals to make schools more self-determining and accountable. Although much of the program has yet to be put into effect, the plan and steps taken to implement it caused a major upheaval not only to the system but also to people working in it. For example: the managers of change invested a huge amount of work and worry in the whole process; some of the 'victims' of change suffered personally and professionally; and a lot of those in …

The research design employed to evaluate this study utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods and procedures. Quantitative methods included a quasi-experimental design with the inservice training program as the independent variable and the posttest measure of cooperating teacher effectiveness as the dependent variable. Participants in the investigation were 42 student teacher triads--student teachers from two large urban universities, their cooperating teachers in schools providing placements for the student teaching experience and their university supervisors.
