G90-991 Parenting Your Child Effectively (Revised November 2003), Kathy Bosch, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1990

G90-991 Parenting Your Child Effectively (Revised November 2003), Kathy Bosch, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide contains guidelines to help parents interact with their children.

Parenting is both an action and an attitude! Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs you will have. One of the most difficult aspects of parenthood is the multitude of split-second decisions needed to guide and discipline children.

Although parenting is never easy, it becomes considerably more manageable when parents look at their attitudes about raising children. If they wish to change their parenting styles or improve discipline techniques, they need to begin by looking at how they "correct" their children's misbehavior and how they feel afterward.

Global Decisions: A Curriculum For Enrichment In Health Education Using Kohlberg's Discussion Of Moral Dilemmas, Leanne Bond Lacey

All Graduate Projects

Using Lawrence Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development and Discussion of Moral Dilemmas, an enrichment curriculum was created for use in the senior high school Health Education classroom or the Gifted Education classroom. The student is first introduced to the six stages of moral development as outlined by Kohlberg's theory. The instructional theories of Taba, Simon and Raths are also integrated with Kohlberg's theory through both individual and group discussion activities. First, the student solves one of eighteen Health Education-related moral dilemmas. After solving the dilemmas, the student asks questions of the others in a group discussion setting, and is in …

G90-988 A Process For Building Coalitions, Georgia L. Stevens Jan 1990

G90-988 A Process For Building Coalitions, Georgia L. Stevens

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

What should you consider in building coalitions? This NebGuide offers guidelines.

What is a Coalition?

1. A coalition is a group of organizations and individuals working together for a common purpose. There are two types of coalitions:

2. "One issue" or event coalitions only have to agree on one particular issue. The coalition is dissolved when the issue has been solved or the event has been coordinated.

"Multi issues" coalitions have related issues, such as nutrition and health, child care needs, elderly health care, or the environment. This more permanent type of coalition recognizes the value of mobilizing together for …

Rp375 Angora Goats In The Midwest, R. M. Jordan Jan 1990

Rp375 Angora Goats In The Midwest, R. M. Jordan

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Angora goats and the mohair they produce are not major agricultural products in the United States and certainly not in Minnesota where there are fewer than 3,000 Angora goats. Flocks are small and often are owned by those interested in hand weaving. Nevertheless, mohair finds a ready market. In 1989, raw mohair prices in Texas were: kid hair (it's much finer), $6.50/lb; yearling hair, $2.00/lb; and adult hair, $1.00/lb. In addition, mohair incentive payments have amounted to $30 to $15 per head the past two years. These high hair prices are stimulating interest in goat production among an increasing number …

Learning By Design: Constructing Experiential Learning Programs, Daniela Weinberg, Gerald M. Weinberg Jan 1990

Learning By Design: Constructing Experiential Learning Programs, Daniela Weinberg, Gerald M. Weinberg

ADAPT Program: Essays

How can we assure that our students really learn? If we want to improve the learning process, we'll have to decide what we mean by "learn." Recall a time when you learned
something new -- a new skill, a new technique, a new word, a new hobby, a new way of interacting with people and consider the following three questions:

First, why did you bother? . You knew that learning would change you, and that change meant stress. Why would anyone volunteer for additional stress?

Second, how dld you feel during the learning process? Was it difficult or easy? Was …

Materials, Sidney Gottlieb Jan 1990

Materials, Sidney Gottlieb

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

Part 1 of the book Approaches to Teaching the Metaphysical Poets, edited by Sidney Gottlieb. The chapter is not an attempt to settle the implicit argument between those who (in the words of one colleague) "most certainly do not believe in using an anthology of seventeenth-century poetry" and those who, for one reason or another, choose to use an anthology. Nor is what follows a comprehensive list of all available editions and anthologies or a fully developed critical review of them. It is, rather, a brief description of those texts mentioned by respondents, including enough information to help …

Teaching Learning Strategies In Sixth Grade Social Studies Classrooms, Kristine Rae Bowen Jan 1990

Teaching Learning Strategies In Sixth Grade Social Studies Classrooms, Kristine Rae Bowen

All Graduate Projects

This project introduced four learning strategies using the sixth grade social studies textbook, The World (Cangemi, 1986) as a framework to enhance reading comprehension. The strategies were selected because they: activated background knowledge, set a purpose, and encouraged active thinking while reading. The project explained each strategy, demonstrated how each could be implemented to promote active comprehension in a content area text, and developed lessons to teach students to incorporate the strategy while reading a social studies textbook.

Declines In Student Achievement In Science-- Implications For Public Education, Robert P. Hogan Jan 1990

Declines In Student Achievement In Science-- Implications For Public Education, Robert P. Hogan

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

During the 1960s and 1970s, major innovative science curricula were introduced into public schools in the United States, and federal funds were used to improve the quality of science teachers. Nevertheless, student achievement in science has generally declined since 1963. This research focused on changes in four of the key variables related to science achievement--teachers, students, curricula, and school goals. The research examined (a) meta-analyses of the effectiveness of the innovative science curricula on student achievement, (b) research on changes in teacher and student characteristics during the last 30 years, (c) educational literature on changes in the goals of public …

G90-1006 Setting Up A Family Council, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1990

G90-1006 Setting Up A Family Council, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

A family sitting down together and talking about important thoughts, situations, and issues is certainly not a new idea--it has been practiced for centuries. It is an idea, however, that needs to be put to work in the present day.

1. Do you treat your child better, worse or about the same as you treat your best friend?

2. Does your child have equal status as a person with the adults in your family?

3. Do you assign chores and times to do them, or does your child help in the planning?

4. Do you try to make decisions about …

G90-986 Strengthening The Couple Relationship, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1990

G90-986 Strengthening The Couple Relationship, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

After a couple has been married for a number of years, there seems to be a lack of individual artistry and creativity in the relationship. Each person becomes involved in a routine of relating to the other in a certain way. Patterns develop because of living in the same house and responding to children's needs. Couples develop certain habitual work patterns, see the same people socially, etc. The same ways of relating and behaving may persist, unchallenged and unchanged, for years. The behavior will continue long after it has ceased to produce delight, zest or growth. Therefore, the most destructive …

Cc90-352 Team Building: Developing A Productive Team, Arnold J. Bateman Jan 1990

Cc90-352 Team Building: Developing A Productive Team, Arnold J. Bateman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Team building is an effort in which a team studies its own process of working together and acts to create a climate that encourages and values the contributions of team members. Their energies are directed toward problem solving, task effectiveness, and maximizing the use of all members' resources to achieve the team's purpose. Sound team building recognizes that it is not possible to fully separate one's performance from those of others.
